Bottle: Poured a dark brown color ale with a medium bubbly head with slightly better then average retention. Aroma of quiet sweet malt with not really much else going on. Taste is also dominated at first by sweet caramel malt but there is a definite watery feeling at the end that I didn’t enjoy. There is also an unrefined grain taste that I didn’t particularly enjoy. I’m glad we now seem to have more and more beer available from this brewer but I would enjoy them even more if they were as good as they were a couple years ago.

poured into a calice Brassin d'hiver.

The color is cupper, clear light brown-orangish with a head color moka.

The smell of this beer is malty, alcohol, yeasty-fruity.

Taste of this beer is malty, some yeast-fruit-alcohol thing going on.

The mouthfeel is creamy, moderate body, some caramal aftertaste

overall this is enjoyable.

750 mL brown bottle.

Pours a clear reddish brown with a thin white head.

Aroma is of sour cherries with some roasted malt.

Starts off bready with toasted malt and dried fruit notes - raisins come to mind. Alcohol gives the beer some heat towards the middle. Not much hops to speak of. Dries out towards the finish. Body is a bit on the thin side with moderate carbonation.

The aroma is promising but the taste falls short of my expectations. Not bad but nothing to get excited about.

I purchased my bottle of Brassin D'Hiver on a trip to Montreal last summer. It's been sitting in my cellar ever since.

The beer pours a clear, ruby color with a frothy off white head on top. The foam dissolves slowly to a sheet on the beer, leaving behind spots of lace on the glass.

The aroma is sweet and candy like. Reminds me of a toasted marshmallow. Notes of honey and toasted malt with a touch of light fruit (apple?) permeate the aroma.

Each sip of this medium bodied beer is light on the palate with a soft effervescent fizz throughout. The flavor is sweet with notes of honey, pale and caramel malt, and apple. It finishes dry with a mild floral hop bitterness.

Overall this is an easy drinking, well balanced tasty brew. It's a bit thin in the mouthfeel, but otherwise a great beer.

A: Very nice dark orange/red looking beer. Fully transparent. Head is tan and ridiculously strong and lasting. Very creamy looking head.

S: Some floral hops. Lots of dried fruits. Banana and cherries. Some cloves. Strong alcohol notes. Very faint actually.

T: Strong malts note upfront. Bread, caramel, earth. A bit of dryness thanks to the hops, a bit floral. Then it's a fruit explosion: dried plums and orange, bananas, STRONG cherries. Some spices as expected from a winter ale: cinnamon, cloves, raspberries. A bit of tart.
Sadly, the alcohol is also very noticeable.

M: Much lighter than expected for a beer with this ABV. I'd say medium body. Carbonation is medium. Nothing exceptional.

D: Again medium. The alcohol is strong but the feel is light.

750 ml corked bottle. Stamped 28-02-09 in the back.

A- Nice off-white orange tinged head. Colour is dark amber with nice flashes of deep red and orange. Nice bubbliness. Very good looking.

S- Alcohol. Bizar fungus note. Liveable but not a great aspect of this beer.

T- Strong alcohol kick. Roasted nuts. Plums and raisins. Nice but not all that complex. Definitely passes as a winter beer for warming cold nights.

MF- Warming. Medium to heavy body.

D- Not a bad winter warmer. Was more or less what I expected.

Received this brew from Phyl21ca via trade! Cheers!

The pour of this "brown beer" is semi thick. It resulted a decent head with a nice nutty brown colour! This bier is a product of France. Apparently they brew in France.
The taste is sweet but dry. This beer was good but didnt stand out amongst other beer I've had tonight! (hopslam and ruination)

Overall, it was an okay beer but I wouldn't ISO it! Thanks Phyl21ca for the great trade!

Cheers!

Thanks to iconoklaztor for letting me sample this one. The name means "Winter Brew." Not sure what to expect from this, never had the style before.

Pours a rich orange/red/brown with a big thick tan head that is... not receding.

Taste is very sweet without much to balance it out. The fruity sweetness is ok, but it doesn't have much else going on. This reminds of a weak barleywine.

I'm not really thrilled by this one, but it was fun trying it.

Easy drinking and very smooth, listed as dhiver. Steel cap that is like a giant staple, relase it and it goes flying across the room. After surviving that, it is an easy drinking brown ale with roast and malt, worth sharing, 750 ml is a lot for one man. Sourness in there from time to time-it's a cuvee. Good mouthfeel, not too much spice, Malt is the word.

Here's a new guy in town: Brassin d'Hiver. It comes from France in a corked 26oz bottle similar to the ones used by Unibroue. It got a nice winter scene label.

Appearance: It pours an brownish copper colour (similar to an old port wine) with a very, very generous beige head lasting forever on a good body. It is above the average and I like this.

Smell: It produces lots of hops aromas, but it is mostly fruity and earthy. It is clean and self-confident.

Taste: This beer makes me thinking that it tastes like a red or port wine matured in a cellar for a while, but made of grain. It is bitter and dry, but very fun to taste.

Mouthfeel: That's the weakness. It is too bubbly, sour and aggresive for the palate.

Drinkability: It got attitude. At my first sip, I wasn't sure to really like it, but the most you drink the most you discover it. It worths a try for sure.

Stunning deep amber transitioning on chestnut with an off-white head of meringue-like foam that shows some lasting power. The beer is crystal clear and displays a graceful bead which feeds the head of large bubbles.

Aromas are straightforward malt up front followed by a touch of diacetyl butterscotch. No tangible notes of hops but a mild earthiness breaks the otherwise simple, clean, and pleasant aroma profile.

Flavours fall into line with the aromas. Clean and straightforward with firm texture, giving the impression of plenitude without being cloying... in fact I would classify this as middling dry but firm bodied. An assertive malt accent reveals itself initially and is quickly joined by notes of cocoa and vanilla neatly juxtaposed in the middle. The finish is clean with a mild bitterness to balance the whole while hints of malt and caramel come back for an encore. Full and satisfying.

A bomber of this goes down quite nicely without necessarily leaving behind a feeling of being full and bloated, but a second would be viewed as gluttony. Very drinkable and a great winter brew to share with company before a supper of French onion soup and Carbonade Flammande. Lucky to have such a fine example of a Bière de Garde on my store shelves.
