Dark unfiltered amber with white head. Delectable fruity aroma of apricot, pear and apple. The taste is slightly sweet, yeasty with a tart cherry finish. Very easy, smooth drinking. Sort of like a cross between a saison and a Belgian pale ale, it was very enjoyable. Thankfully, on draft at Capone's so I didn't have to travel to France.

look: 4.25 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Appearance: A lovely and deep reddish brown topped with a creamy off-white head. Active carbonation and a heavy head.

Smell: Honey scents, maltiness, a bit earthy, but rather clean and simple.

Taste: Earthy and musty yet crisp and fresh at the same time. Some sweet undernotes, but rather dry with a nice, balanced bitterness. A hint of a muted, barely there fruitiness, like dried berries. Toasted/roasted notes throughout. A bit of malty and yeasts flavours bouncing around. Alcohol flavours are prominent, lingering on the tongue along with a pleasant herbal spiciness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and creamy, really quite good.

Overall: Very very good, quite complex and interesting. My first Bière de Garde (or any French beer for that matter), and if this beer is in any way representative of the style, it's going to quickly become one of my favourite varieties.

11.2 oz bottle poured into a glass.

Appearance: Pours a reddish brown with a huge white-ish head. Wasn't expecting all this carbonation or foam.

Aroma: Smells of toffee, booze, some dark fruit and toast.

Taste: The taste follows the nose. Maltier than I expected. Not particularly sour or tart. Pretty boozy.

Mouthfeel: Medium depth of body. Pretty well balanced.

Overall: I expected to be wowed by this, but it's pretty decent as opposed to transcendent. I'm not super familiar with the style, but this seems like a workmanlike example of it.
