Customizable burgers and craft beer? Talk about temptation that sits just a few blocks east of where I currently work. The Counter is located just inside the Newport Beach city limits at Irvine Avenue and 17th St/Westcliff. After working late one night, I stumbled in for a bite and beer.

There's not much to like about the interior. It's quite plain and "industrial" styled. Cheap metal chairs and plastic tables don't look a whole lot of fun to sit at. The bar area is a little better, or at least a little more decorative with spirits and beer bottles lined up and lit up. Very darkly lit in general; more light in these circumstances would have been better.

The menu is easy to read and customizable through the stroke of a pencil. All sorts of topping and meats are available to make your heart content. One speculates that this was the inspiration behind Slater's 50/50. With a one-third pound of lean grass-fed beef (I still prefer the jucier grain-fed variety, thankyouverymuch) topped with bacon, swiss, grilled onions, BBQ sauce, plus a side of sweet potato fries and a pint of Stone IPA, the stress of my 8-hour day went away in 8 seconds. "A meal fit for a king", declared the bartender, who was very friendly during my visit. The food was fine, though I had hoped it would be better, nonetheless hit the spot.

Now to the beers. Eight beers on-tap, seperated into 4 towers of two, plus ten-something bottles. Stone IPA, Leffe, Hoegaarden, and Alleycat Amber and Downtown Brown highlight the drafts, while in the bottle were La Fin du Monde, Samuel Smith's, Rochefort, and Three Philosphers. Chilled shakers is what you'll get for your draft, but they also had special branded glassware for the Stella/Leffe/Hoe trio of InBev drafts. The drafts are reasonably priced at $5.

This is not a destination, but a place for a pretty good, customizable burger, and a tasty beer. Even based on the beer, it will do in a pinch. (1,936 characters)
