750mL bottle poured into taster - thanks alex

Pours a cloudy mahogany-reddish color with a thin crop of beige head on top. Fades into slick film and some traces of lacing on the glass.

Dark, earthy sourness in the nose with raisin and oak. Touches of red wine, cherry and dark fruit. A bit lactic and acidic, light warmth and rye spice.

Notes of dark fruit and rye spice up front, which adds a perception of hoppiness to the beer. Increasing sourness with red wine, grape skins, oak and raisin. A few hints of cherry with soft funkiness. Acidic and sour in the finish.

Medium body, higher carbonation, dry and crisp on the tongue. I've tasted a handful of the Woods Series and this was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed the addition of rye to the brew, along with the darker, earthy sourness.

I was packing up a bunch of beers in preparation for a move and noticed the cork on this one had a slight leak, so in the fridge it went.

First, let me say that I am shocked by how good this beer is. It has the perfect balance of flavors - the brett funk is at just the right level and the flavor is full of fruit, some slight bitterness, good sweet/sour balance - just perfect.

I truly wish I had a case of this beer - and I rarely feel that way. I am not kidding when I say I put this beer on par with the best sours worldwide.

Now, why isn't this beer more popular? If anyone reading this happens to have an extra - please let me know - I could probably find something in my modest celler to trade with you.

A: Pours a deep murky red (when held to the light), almost brown. There is about one half finger of tan head that settles quickly. Not much lacing as it drinks.

S: The smell is sour, tart, and a little spicy. There are some big sour cherry and sour grape notes. I'm also picking up a bit of balsamic vinegar and touch of rye spice.

T: The initial hit is puckering tart with some nice spice. the beer falls a bit flat in the middle. It's just missing something. It's almost like it shifts directly to the finish. The finish is tart and astringent.

M: Medium bodied beer. There is a bit of stingy carbonation, but it's hard to tell if that is from the carb or the taste of the beer.

O: This beer is alright. It's a bit harsh, but it's not terrible. The truth is... the label states that this beer was aged for 13 months in a whiskey barrel, and I don't believe that this even saw a day inside a barrel. It's too effervescent (i.e. not smooth enough) for my liking.

A – Mahogany body with a towering off-white head. Ok lace and retention.

S – Tangy oak, maple sap, and leather. Johnnie Walker booze note. Brown sugar.

T – Deliciously dry with a potent sourness that rolls through hay, tart cherry, and apple. Leathery, sour finish.

M – Crisp and clean with a medium body. Nice carbonation.

O – A clean, dry, delicious, and assertive sour.

A: Hazy deep red brown pour with a nice white head. Thick, the head sticks around for a long time and laces nicely.

S: Vinegar, oak, very acidic and sour. The bottle says Whiskey, cherries, and vanilla. I guess I smell some cherries, but the other two certainly not.

T: The taste is really sour, I get the cherries a bit more on the taste than the smell. Acidic, funky, very good, but not a lot going on other than sour.

MF: Light, tart, carbonated very well.

O: This was really tasty, a nice mix up during a tasting I was in the middle of. I wish something else was happening other than the sour, but I didn't hate it.

A: Pours a cloudy puke-brown; barely any head, light lacing

S: Tart sour oak, huge notes of brettanomyces; some rye plays around in the back of the nose

T: Starts off with strong tart brett/woody flavors, then develops delicious notes of whiskey in the background as it hits the middle of the tongue; finishes ridiculously smooth as it opens up and expands on the back of the palate to reveal more tart woody flavors

M: Medium viscosity, barely any carbonation; ridiculously smooth and buttery

O: One of the best sours I've ever had. It's not overwhelmingly tart, but it balances all of it's subtle flavors so well that no single flavor sticks out above the rest. Very much recommended

750ml into a tulip glass. The cork was seized in and took a great deal of effort to release.

A - Dark brown/ruby body. Off-white foamy head with thin lacing. Looks pretty typical of a flanders red.

S - Cherries, vinegar, oak, vanilla and some rye spice. Fairly subdued and light, and actually not very pleasant. Its not funky, it just smells like a mess of aromas.

T - Wow! The flavor starts off with tart cherries and acidic vinegar. The finish is this fantastic smooth mixture of oak, whiskey, and spicy rye. It really works well with the tart fruity body. Medium mouth feel with a high level of carbonation.

O - Not my favorite of the woods series. The flavor profile is really interesting though. I think the rye whiskey barrels really compliment the base beer. Definitely worth a try.

I bought this bottle at Julio's earlier this year along with some other Cisco beers, decided to open it at a little tasting in the Columbus area this weekend.

First off, this bottle was a slow gusher, nothing explosive but the bubbles definitely wanted out. So the first couple of pours had very thick heads. The beer itself is a hazy orange-hued brown color, and the foam was a light tan color and poofy. It was hard for me to detect rye in the aroma, at least initially. Mostly I got Consecration-like dark wild ale aromas, cherry and funk, caramel malts and so on. But the longer it sat I could get a little bourbon in the nose, not exactly rye but more a sweet liqueur under the funk.

It tastes tart and sour, with a definitive acidic bite. Cherry is dominant for me, as is the brett, this actually was much better than I thought it would be. Lots of oak character, mildly vinous, excellent really.

Medium-thin body, and while it obviously had adequate carbonation (with the foaming from the bottle) it never seemed too bubbly. Recommended for sure.

Pours a very murky orangish colour. A bit of white head. Looks reasonably good. Smells tart and spicy. Lots of rye on the nose and the tongue. Tastes very tart almost acidic. Overall a bit hot but enjoyable. Highly carbonated and overall loving the barrel and rye but not the sourness

A - Ruby red beer with a decent fluffy head. Not really much left on the sides.

S - Bourbon, oak, and some lactic smell as well. There is some vanilla, spice, a little rye, and some malts.

T - Some vinegar and lactic acid. Rye spice, a little sour, and some moderate bourbon. Not great, but it's a bourbon barrel wild, which tends to be more experimental than anything else.

M - Has a lot of carbonation, maybe a little too much. Medium bodied.

O - It's okay, not really something I'd seek out again.

bottle from awesome girlfriend from some place outside boston.

pours a nice murky brown with a couple fingers of head.

nose is very nice also, vanilla, oak, and tart cherry... the vanilla comes out more and more the more I smell this. yum.

taste is tart, for sure, but not too tart. I love the sour as hell wilds, and this one is a little on the lighter side. A light tartness, cherry is there, along with the slight oak and vanilla, but nothing is really over powering, nor is it anything special. The tartness dies a bit the more you drink it. I wish i could actually taste the rye in this...
mouthfeel is on the lighter side as well, nice carbonation, it seems that cisco is really dialing in these sours well, and can turn just about anything into a nice balanced sour... but this one seems a bit boring.

750mL corked and caged bottle poured into a tulip. Thanks to bay01 for the bottle!

(A)- Pours a deep burgundy color and produced a nice cap of tan froth. Good retention, some lace.

(S)- Lots and lots of oak notes. A dusty leather dirty floor kind of funk. Very subtle bits of cherry in the background. Smells great!

(T)- Like the smell was, very oaky with a thin cherry pie-like spice. Yet it almost has that same taco seasoning-like flavor to it too like the Pechish Woods had, though thankfully its so oaky that this is an afterthought. Vinous in character overall with a mild tartness.

(M)- A good carbonation level. A decent balance too, though it is kind of thin in the middle. Spicy, in both a good and bad way.

(D)- Started out well, but it turned into a very straightforward wild ale overall. Good, but nothing extraordinary.

This beer pours a reddish brown color with a huge off White to light tan colored head. The smell is inviting sour and there is definitely a rye presence along with some whiskey notes. The flavor is tart with a good bit of flavor whiskey flavor from the barrel and again the rye flavor hangs on to show itself In the finish. The mouthfeel is slightly Puckering light bodied with high carbonation. Overall a great whiskey barrel aged sour I liked it better than bourbonic plague.

Another whiskey sour please

750ml corked bottle into a Cantillon tulip. Thanks a ton, Tony!

A: Cloudy, brown body with a finger of frothy tan head. Ok retention and lace. Not bad.

S: Lovely, intense acetic sourness on top of some sweet caramel malt + spicy rye. Spectacular rye sour aroma.

T: Tingly sourness up front, with the richness and depth of the grain coming through more on the back end. Very acetic, bitingly tart finish. Delicious.

M: Very prickly, frothy medium body. A bit much.

O: I just can't believe this beer is only 5.5% - not because it tasted boozy in the least, but because it complemented its intense sourness with a truly profound malt backbone. How they got all that rich grain in there without much alcohol is beyond me, but color me impressed. This is definitely one of the best in the Woods series.

A: The beer pours a hazy dark amber color with a large off-white head.

S: A nice sour cherry aroma to begin with followed by a light acetic note. A very intense rye whiskey smell to it, and a lot of the booze comes through. A moderate mustiness and funk along with lots of oak and a bit of vanilla.

T: The flavor comes off a bit harsh and abrasive. Lots of rye/whiskey flavor and alcohol heat to it. Moderate vinegar sourness as well as some cherries. Straw and musty oak give what funk there is. If it wasn't for the booziness, this would be pretty good.

M: Medium in body with a medium to high level of carbonation.

O: Not as good as the other Woods beers from these guys, mostly due to the strong alcohol presence.

Pours a bright red/brown, crystal clear. The 1/2" of head I get in the glass disappears quickly and leaves nothing behind, in the glass or on it.

You can smell it from feet away. Tart, deep fruit, very little oak and only the subtlest hint of rye.

The taste was very nice, but not as balanced as I'd like. Very sour. A little barrel, some nice yeast on the back end. Very enjoyable.

Mouthfeel is very fizzy on the tongue but very smooth none the less and has almost no bite. A slight pucker factor though.

Overall the bottle developed a lot as it warmed. The barrel becomes more pronounced along with the rye and the yeast. and also gets a bit less sour, so maybe letting the bottle rest would be a good idea on the next Cisco bottles I open

Light fizzy head, raisin brown reddish color.

Nose has nice light oak, light spicy rye, light tart sour funk, light sweet malts, bit of barnyard, light cherry and whisky aromas.

Taste has nice sour tart malt, reddish malt ale flavor, light spicy rye component, light oak, bit of barnyard funk, nice malty taste, little flemmy.

Mouth is med bodied with lower carbonation.

Overall nice, not the best of teh Woods series, but decent. A nice rye addition, and nice wild touch, not too sweet or syrupy like some of the others.

I've had this bottle for many, many months, as in August roughly. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - A spectacular appearance on this. A nice hazelnut almost crystal clear colour. There was a TON of action in the glass, tons of bubbles rising from the bottom. Atop this sat a big, fluffy two finger super light tan head that never faded less than a quarter of an inch thick and left a little side lacing.

S - Nice typical wild yeast aromas here with the addition of some light oak and rye aromas.

T - Hrm, not a fan of this. Not sure if a few years this would be something spectacular but now it just doesnt taste ready. There is that nice wild ale profile, though not as sour as I like, intermixed with some rye and spice flavours. There is a nice oak finish, but, maybe its just the overall bourbon barrel qualities that dont do it for me. Have yet to find a bourbon barrel aged wild ale that I really loved.

M - At first it was just far too much carbonation, however, after letting it sit in the tulip for a while things smoothed out. Finished result is a nice low/medium carbonation crisp, dry mouthfeel.

D - Its a nice wild ale, just not sure if its for me. I don't quite like the rye finish, or the bourbon qualities. that being said, I can respect this wild ale for what it is. Just not for me.

Reviewed from notes. Had a few pours at Night of the Funk 2010. Pours a medium chestnut brown with a thin off white head. Nose brings forward really nice notes of bourbon and oak plus some lactic acid. There is also a bit of vanilla and spice in the background. The flavor doesn't meld quite like the nose did. There is some sourness that doesn't quite hit with all the components. Bourbon-aged sours have really been hit or miss with me. I didn't particularly enjoy Bourbonic, though this was better. Spice and sourness in the feel. Drinkability is pretty nice. I continue to be impressed by Cisco and look forward to their new offerings.

Good ole' jh1982 popped this open with me the other day in a little beer drinking festival. I believe this is my first Cisco beer, and a pretty good one to start.

The appearance on this one is beautiful. It pours a dark ruby red that produces a nice pitch white fluffy head. The color is magnificent, a great clarity for a Wild Ale and a beautiful color at that. No lacing from the head although, my only complaint.

The smell is of a spicy rye grain, some vinegar notes, some candy sugar sweetness, and strong malt backbone other than the rye. Not very strong on any of the smell, subtle overall.

The thing about this beer is I feel like it hasn't developed enough. It tastes like a Flanders Oud Bruin LIGHT. It has some great rye spiciness that pairs with the light vinegar notes well. Once it starts opening up in my glass it produces a light must-cellar flavor with some oak tannins. Really not sour enough.

A good mouthfeel with interesting flavors make this a pretty good sipper. Not enough flavor overall but still enjoyable.

Appearance: Very dark brown/amber with a great big head, no lacing

Smell: Nice light sourness, pronounced maltiness, figs and cherries

Taste Lightly sour with malts, toffee, french oak, figs, dates and cherries. Light vinegar and some balsamic vinegar. Nice subtle funkiness as well with a very faint brown sugar / molasses note on the very tail end. My only wish is that they left in in the barrel a bit longer.

Mouthfeel: Dry, medium body, well carbonated. Well done on this front.

Drinkability: Not incredibly sour, low ABV, great mouthfeel. Very drinkable. I believe I have now tried all of their bottled wild ales; I'd put this one behind Monomy Kriek and Cherry woods but above cherry woods and dark woods. They are really doing some interesting things at Ciscso and came out of nowhere for me, it is great to see brewers like Cisco and Cascade moving the ball forward while the older vanguard (i.e. Russian River) sits still or perhaps even moves backwards.

Another bottle brought over by Beace at Jackie O's...Pours a medium brown with amber notes, a watery tan head, not much to look at....A really nice aroma of oak, bourbon, acid, rye, and sourness. Can't believe this combo would work but it does....The taste brings out a lot more oak, vanilla, bourbon, rye, not as much sour comes through. Really good and highly drinkable.

If you're looking for a barrel aged rye this is more of go to then a wild ale, although its sour, the sourness is more of an accent. Worth trying.

Well I'm just pleased to be drinking this. Pours hazy orangish red with a small white head which fades to a small ring and floaties. The aroma is nice, but not too strong. Vanilla, cranberry, cherry and oak, with faint wiffs of rye/whisky coming through. The flavor is nice with big flavors presented softly. Tart berries, oaky vanilla notes, faint rye in the background, tart, very very light sour horse notes. Very nice velvety creamy mouthfeel. A good beer that could have sat in the barrel another month or two.

Pours a very dark reddish amber with a big, short-lived cream-colored head that leaves good lacing on the way down to a thin cap.

The aroma is tart fruit alongside oak, vanilla and plenty of whiskey. There is also a decent funky presence and some lactic sourness as well.

The flavor is even more tart with an initial lip-puckering sourness, lactic with some vinegar, paired with some tart cherries and other dark fruits. The finish is extremely dry and oaky with a bit of whiskey burn.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied, very dry with a lot of earthy funk lingering with the whiskey on the palate.

Another nice effort in the Woods series from Cisco. The whiskey presence is well integrated and doesn't overpower the flavor.

Full and Bye Rye- 750 corked and caged. Pours a dark amber with a huge off white head into a 22oz dogfish snifter. Rustic wood on the nose with a bit of alcohol. Light cherry flavor with a bit of oak, vanilla and a bit of vinegar. Pretty complex flavors, not too sure if they are all working together just yet. Slightly oily mouthfeel as it warms and gets a bit more tart. Interesting beer.
