almost more of a brown ale than a porter this one, thinner in body and a little tannic in feel, but an excellent porter overall that almost tastes like its spent some time in oak, real earthy and woody, mature and refined, mellowed in that way. lacking the malt density and roasted barley bitterness to fit real well into the porters i am used to, but i like its lightness in both respects. it lets the beer drink a little easier, and allows the chocolate malt aspect to be more forward than the roast. almost no sweetness in here either, its especially dry in the finish, almost chalky feeling on the palate. carbonation is excellent and the lighter body makes it pretty easy. there is a little grain hull tannic thing going on in the finish, presenting itself as a mild acidity. i know cisco hasnt been in colorado for awhile now, so finding this beer on a shelf this week probably implies some age on it. perhaps it has denatured some, or aged less gracefully than others, but i think the beer overall is still fantastic. would be a nice food porter with the lack of bitterness and gentler body.

Bottle was an extra from a trade a while back. Enjoyed from a beer hunter tasting glass. Brew poured a pewter black with a massive 3 fingers of head, big foamy off white head that hung out for ages and coated the glass with lacing as it dissolved eventually. Nose sings chocolate and believe it not but i get a lot of cola...and the typical porter char. Taste is milk chocolate washed over by roast and than sizzled with char and cooled off with milk. Easy drinker, fluffy...a bit fizzy and super char on the feel. Overall a nice porter, nothing to lose your mind over, but then again, how many porters make you lose your mind?

Rich, smoky aroma has an overtone of semi-sweet chocolate and subtle roast malt and licorice notes. It pours a deep, warm sable with a thick, fluffy and rather persistent tan head. Flavor, though, lacks the depth that the aroma promised - still smoky like a good porter with roast malt and coffee notes and hints of licorice and chocolate, just not as strong as the bouquet. Texture has OK body but plenty of fizz. Overall, a good porter, if not an outstanding one. Definitely worth a try, especially if you like dark beers.
