We had been backpacking around South East Europe for a while and were taking a break on Hvar when I found this gem. It had been cheap wine and Euro lagers for about 3 straight weeks while working our way through Hungary, Bosnia and Croatia and I had really been itching for a good beer. Low and behold, I found a Belgian beer bar on Hvar.
This place is right on the row of restaurants, close to the port. Fairly easy to miss, considering its a nonchalant cafe in a row of nonchalant cafes. The only thing that caught my attention was the fact that they used McChouffe coasters. With my attention perked, I picked up the menu and saw that it really was a small beer bar with fairly good (honestly its excellent for the area) selection of beer. Mostly Belgians with a couple German beers thrown in for good measure. Brands like Duvel, Chouffe, Kasteel, Maredsous and Schneider. They also carry all the Trappist except for Westy. The first beer I ordered was a Orval. The waiter brought it with appropriately branded glassware. I took one sip and the brett was huge. Looked at the date and realized these bottles were close to 3 years old. Perfectly bretty Orval. Needless to say, I ordered a couple more after that. I’m guessing most of the bottles are along the same lines.
Service is typical for the area. It takes a bit of getting used to. If you need another beer, your best off trying to flag down the waiter. There is no food there except for chips, so eat before. Its a bit pricey since you are paying a premium for all that beer to be shipped out there, but I think the Orvals I ordered were only about 8 bucks a pop. If you’re in the area and really looking for a good beer, this a good bet to find it.
