Notes/Commercial Description:
Death seems so obvious: the end of life, no mas, kaput. But Humans stand an optimistic animal. Many traditions suggest alternate endings: Resurrection, reincarnation, rebirth, afterlife. Even the atheist view of Eternal Oblivion doesn't seem quite final, more of a shift in spiritual states of (un)consciousness. As usual, Jewish tradition prescribes... Food. 7 days of family, community, and bagels (beer!), called, Shiva, meaning "7" in Hebrew. The flip side to the 7 days of Creation with the 7th as a holy day of rest. The first meal of Shiva is "the comfort meal." And the number 7 provides powerful mojo: 7 Jewish wedding blessings, 7 Liberal Arts, 7 Lucky Japanese gods, 7 stars of the Big Dipper, 7 colors of the rainbow, 7 seas, 007 license to kill, 7 dwarves, We are 7 by Wordsworth with a child's view of death, 7 deadly sins, Best of 7 finals in NBA, NHL, MLB, 7th Inning stretch, no. 7 on Elway & Tiny Archibald. George Costanza yearned to name his firstborn, "7" as a living tribute to no. 7 Mickey Mantle. The 7 Award however must go to the immortal George Carlin for 7 Dirty Words, inspired by another hero Lenny Bruce. Coming into 17 years of beer, and Year no. 1 with our own Brewery, we commemorate this conversion with Death Of A Contract Brewer, our Shmaltz homage to new life - L'Chaim! Jeremy Cowan, proprietor

12oz bottle as part of mixed 8 pack. Brewed with specialty 2-row, Munich, wheat, crystal rye, chocolate, pale chocolate and kiln coffee malts. Hopped with cascade, citra, summit, crystal, amarillo, ahtanum and chinook. 7% ABV.
Pours out to a clear near black. Popping the cap releases a very brisk Psssht. Carbonation is moderately strong, ~3.0 carbs, forming a ever growing, voluminous light tan soapy head with superior retention and solid lacing. The aroma is interesting. Tropical fruit hops notes like mango, pineapple with some pine and grapefruit. Mouthfeel is sharp and biting from the roast malts and the hops, with a medium body. Taste opens with a blast of the hops, followed by coffee and LOTS of roast malt...a bit much for my liking. Very bracing and aggressive. The bitterness is very firm and frankly too much for me. Tons of hops throughout and into the finish and lingering forever in a puckering bitter aftertaste.

Not my cup of tea. This is a well-brewed beer, but it's the least enjoyable beer I think I've had from Shmaltz. I wouldn't recommend it, nor would I ever want to buy this again.

Pours an effervescent mahogany with 3 fingers of tan lacing. Superior lacing & head retention

S: Pine & grapefruit, roastyness,

T: Follows the nose, some dryness, a little licorice & cola, plus roasted grain up front. Roasty malts, a touch of charred grain, pineyness, slight astringency & grapefruit as this warms, some carob as well. Finishes grapefruitty, piney & with some roasty grain & a little bit of grainy sweetness

MF: Medium bodied with form carbonation, nice balance

A nice take on the style, very drinkable

Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass. Very dark, brownish-black with the odd reddish glint, topped by a rich creamy tan head around an inch high. Features a massive hop aroma, mainly canned mandarin with some grapefruit and pine, along with charred grain, chocolate, and raisin. Fantastic aroma that contrasts with the palate, not necessarily in a negative way. This one favors the dark malts, some charred grain as on the nose, dark roast coffee, and dry cacao powder with the citrus and tropical hop flavors in the background. Some dark cherry and peach flavors peeking through. Eventually the malts recede a little and a hop spice supplants to an extent, dried citrus rind and pepper along with something quite floral. Fairly thick but certainly not particularly sweet, moderately carbonated and with a bold, oily, spicy, slightly singed finish that goes for miles. If you focus you can still taste the orchard fruit in there amongst the roasted malts and bitter citrus/pine. More roasted that some of the other black IPAs I've tried of late but the bitter, spicy hops do reveal themselves over the course of a pint, blossoming into something rather intense. As usual, this brewery wins with an amusing name and great look on top of the layers of flavor.
