How could we hope to top last year’s Jewbelation Sweet 16 with its cupcakes, unicorns, & Satan’s Ferrari birthday cake? massive challenge. So for Year 17, we threw in a whole new dimension to our shtick – we built our very own brewery! After 17 years of contract brewing, our first Shmaltz Clifton Park batch emerged 17 months after the first draft of the business plan. Coincidence? Renaissance means “Re-birth” in French & Italian. In Buddhism, the concept does not truly translate as “reincarnation” but instead as “becoming,” or a “stream of consciousness.” 11 syllables structure a haiku. Shakespeare penned 17 comedies. In The Simpsons episode “Duffness” Homer sings “When I was 17″ about buying his first beer with a fake I.D. “I drank some very good beer. I stayed up listening to Queen, When I was 17.” In The Office, Dwight recites Rule 17 that all Schrute boys must learn: “Don’t turn your back on bears, men you have wronged, or the dominant turkey during mating season.” Knowledge and growth come in many forms. It is taught that Nirvana is only attained when the soul transcends cycles of rebirth. Looks like Shmaltz just isn’t there yet. So with 17 malts, 17 hops, and 17% ABV, JEWBEL4TIONREBORN serves as another mark of our death as a contract brewer and proof of our conversion to a new life as brewery owner…… L’Chaim!!!

This beer pours a nice dark brown, with a decent amount of sustaining head. Unfortunately, to me, it's all downhill from there. I have actually enjoyed quite a few Shmaltz beers as I could find them in the past. I wondered how this would work given the 17s involved, but for me it didn't mainly because of one "17", listed under ABV.

The smell is sweetish and dark-fruit in nature. Fig more so than date, a bit of honey in the sweetness. Maybe some dark cherries in there. Not bad; I actually don't notice any alcohol.

The taste grabs a little of the smell, then smacks me with an alcohol astringent blast that never quite subsides. The latter feel actually comes more into line with what I would expect from a strong ale, but instead of accentuating the taste. it is a welcome relief from it.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of effort into building a taste profile to me. Seems like an experiment that falls well short.

Darknappearance with tan head that disipates quickly. Aroma is a malt with raisin. Taste is also a malt with raisin that is very smooth and no alcohol aftertaste. The year or so of aging really paid off.

Pours a dense dark brown, almost black color with a small light tan head. Head retention is surprisingly good for a beer of this strength. There is some spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is strong and mostly malty with some dark fruit (figs, plums) and some molasses like sweetness. Some reviewers mentioned dank, earthy hops, but I held onto my bottle for 3.5 years and there is little to no trace of hoppiness. Flavor is more of the same, very sweet, very malty with some yeast and dark fruit. Mouthfeel is rich and sweet. I had this beer at a tasting once and noticed that there was almost no alcohol presence. There was some alcohol apparent in the bottle I just had. Not so much of a burn as an aftertaste. This is still a pretty impressive big beer but it was better when more fresh.

I'm not sure the best way to score this, given its age and my memory of it when fresher, but I suppose I'll rate it as is, given that I have occasionally still seen this on shelves (!) over three years after its release. Living in southern California at the time, I had little exposure to Shmaltz; this was the first beer that made me take notice of them. I was newer to the possibilities of craft beer back in 2013, and the concept of a 17% monster blew me away at the time.

Now, after a number of years in the cellar, Jew'belation 17 is pretty oxidized and showing a lot more fusel alcohol than it did previously. Still an interesting, complex melange, with its dictionary-length list of ingredients. I don't regret keeping a few bottles at all, but time is starting to win the battle. I think it's time to have the vertical tasting.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled in 9/2013. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, toffee, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, raisin, prune, fig, date, licorice, wood, leather, tobacco, pepper, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, toffee, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, raisin, prune, fig, date, licorice, wood, leather, tobacco, pepper, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy and roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, toffee, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, dark fruit, licorice, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, pepper, wood, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and earthy hop flavors; with a nice roast/hop malt/bitterness balance; and zero cloying sweetness or astringent hop flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness; increasing through the glass. Light-medium carbonation and very full body; with a very creamy/slick and fairly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with a light-moderate warmth lingering after the finish; with minimal booziness. Overall this is a great strong ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the huge ABV. Still quite hoppy after 3 years of age, which provides great balance to the huge malt flavors. A very enjoyable offering.

Shared at DLD but I don't think that hampers my view of it. Alcohol glides over sweet dark fruit such as fig and cherry making a cough syrup flavor. It's better than other beers that have turned into cough syrup, but only just. Ha!
