He'brew's Rejewvenator, Dubbel Doppel. A Belgian-style Dubbel and Doppelbock blend, brewed with wine grape juice from both California and New York. 8% ABV.

A: Very clear reddish-brown. Yellow in the dimple. About half a finger's, lopsided head. Fades slowly to a thin ring.

S: I'm not getting a lot on the nose. A little deeper tree sap malt character. A slight grapiness, bordering on raisin.

T/MF: Huh. Light, deep-roasted coffee. Ash. More of that tree sap. Actually, I'd say tree bark, as well. They might have used too much hops for what they were going for (or atleast, what I imagined they were going for by reading the front label). No real sweetness, as one might expecting, given the styles and the grape addition. Not terrible; just, meh. Disappointing, since I know He'Brew can do better.

Poured into a Belgian tulip glass, from a 22 oz. bottle.

Caught somewhere between Belgian Dubbel and German Dopplebock- this schizophrenic ale is smack-dab in a match of tug and war- one sip seeming more dubbel and the next more dopple. Yet the uniqueness that is "American" plays out underneath with simplified taste and straight-forward sweetness.

It charismatic pour is bright and its body sheds its carbonation and reveals a deep crimson hue with tawny browns, copper and bronze colors tethering through. Building above is a dense and creamy tarnish head that outlasts the session and speckling the glass with random lace.

Fruit, malt and spice align on the nose with notions of hard candy, caramel and honey. Dark fruits of the fig, date and raisin family emerge, along with prominent apple and cherry. Taking on light cabernet vinous notes, its peppery balance is playfully tangy spicy.

Its lavish sweetness is cake-like with the sweetness and breadiness pulling together. Its pulled candy sweetness pulls ahead with confectioner's delight. With the dark, dried fruit flavors rising, those hard candy notions seem even stronger. Its biting hop bitterness slices through its sweetness at the same time as its peppercorn and vinous wine notes do- for a complex taste that keeps the taste buds guessing.

Sticky-sweet in body, the more savory tones that marry up to its bready structure collapses, leaving its candied sweetness to linger long in finish. Its tack clings to the mouth like cola and is only lessened by spicy alcohols, peppery yeast spices and light acidity.

I love the idea of a dubbel-dopple blend as this ale is Mr. Jekyll in one sip and Mr. Hyde the next. However, I'm missing the melanoidin-rich savoriness of Dopplebock and the steely malty-dry character of authentic Belgian Dubbels. But its experimentation plays out cleverly in taste and texture.
