LOOK: Unknown vintage, pours a murky brown with an off white foam collar. Looks like the carbonation is still strong, and defintely an unfiltered brew.

SMELL: Richly malty and pungent nose on this. Definitely leather and tobacco, along with a cascade of dark fruit and alcohol fumes. Kind of smells more like a Baltic porter than the sweeter, American interpretations of the style.

TASTE: Dried fruit and dusty cocoa notes dance on the palate being quite nice. The hops have faded slightly but remain earthy, piney and resinous. There is a faint faint note of grapefruit juice. Pipe tobacco, molasses, roast, coffee and must round out the profile quite nicely. For 8% alcohol by weight, there is little evidence of that in the taste.

FEEL: Medium bodied, medium to low carbonation, and a chalky residue all contribute to the mouthfeel. Has some age on it, so it has smoothed out in time.

OVERALL: A very good porter in the vein of its European brethren. Tasty, strong, complex and quite rewarding. One of my favorites from the Jewbelation series, this is a cellar treat.

12oz bottle as part of the 8-15th anniversary box set for $30. Has been cellared in the closed box for a year since I bought it. 8 year anniversary beer brewed with 8000lbs of malt with 8 different grains (2-row, crystal, chocolate, victory, munich, carapils, wheat and oatmeal), 8 different hops (warrior, northern brewer, mt. hood, centennial, cascade, vanguard, tettnang, and czech saaz) and 8% abv.

Pours out to a clear very dark brown, near black, forming a tightly beaded, very creamy light tan head (like good cappuccino foam). Superior head retention and solid thick sticky sheets of lace, moderate carbonation, ~2.5 carbs or so. The nose is redolent of prunes, figs, raisins, spicy hops that have mellowed a bit, rum, carob, a little touch of bourbon, and subtle black walnut. Mouthfeel is slightly acidic due to the hops, with a medium rich, but not syrupy mouthfeel. Cleanly fermented, no off-flavors, even at this age. The taste is a recap of the aroma with a pleasant medium bitterness, in perfect balance with the malts, and some mild dark roasted malt flavor. Reminds me of a strongly hopped baltic porter, but not as roasted or astringent as a robust porter or American stout. Finish of black cherries, leather and mild pipe tobacco.

An excellent beer. My only complaint (and I'm sure I won't have to wait long considering I have the rest of the series to go) is that the mouthfeel is a touch too thin considering the flavor and abv. Highly recommended.
