A- A dark clear copper body, with massive head that leaves an insane amount of lacing.

S- Sweet spicy rye, tabacco leaf, some herbal medicinal qualities as well.

T- A nice unique twist on the DIPA category, instead of churning out a DIPA which everyone else has done Hewbrew took it a step further with rye malt. The rye really manages to bring out the abundunce of hops and showcase them in a way I've never experienced, it manages to cloy out a spice quality and melds perfectly.

M- Nice slick oily feel.

O- I enjoyed this offering from Hebrew, pick it up if you see it around.

i love hops and i love rye. the bottle says it has both inside. so i opened it

it's real dark, but with that much malt involved (enough to produce 10% alc) i guess that's inevitable. it's a deep ambery garnet. the head is nice

the aroma is more room-filling and monistically ever-present than that of any beer i've ever experienced. the beer is sitting a yard away right now and it might as well be in my damn nose. immensely malty an hoppy simultaneously¬ógreat balance. the character of the malt is so complex that it makes me think of a quad. the piney hops fit seamlessly in, and the rye is evident

BIG flavors. thick, creamy yet piercing with the hops and rye spice. deee-lish. this is my first He'brew, but count me in

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a mug...yep a mug.

I like the lable tribute, very nice.
Poured a deep copper with red hues. Not much carbonation rise, misleading. The head is super thick and heavy, with a good 2 fingers of it. Its frothy, like root beer float foam. Color is egge shell white, without the bleach. Big sticky chunks of lace the the walls of the glass.

Aroma is very hoppy, with pine and citrus. A mild scent of alcahol, some spicie notes, bread, fruity sweetness, caramel.

Upfront its smooth and creamy with some carbonation. Hops dominate the front end of the taste, with grapefruit, and pine.
Then some mild alcahol warming comes into play with a bit of a peppercorn flavor.
As I swallow a spice and herbed pumpernickle/ rye flavor comes around.
A mild metalic water flavor, more hops, toffee, a wisp of chocolate and more sweet citrussy juices.
Finish is dry with a bitter hop linger.

This is one complicated, but amazing brew. Alot going on, but never over burdoning my pallet.

Red color, mounds of beige head that don't drop much. Lacing like slices of sticky cheese.

Smells like fruity, spicy Belgianish esters, sweet brown bread like Christmas pudding, piney and citrusy hops, touch of alcohol.

Quite sweet, malty. Bitterness hits after a second or two. Resinous hop flavor. Somewhat spicy and herbacious; with the bitterness and alcohol too, vaguely reminiscent of sweet vermouth. Finishes a little drier, with sticky fruitiness and alcohol.

Really soft and creamy, then sticky. The sweetness and the alcohol limit the drinkability. Good big beer, worth a try.

12oz bottle, great move to the smaller sized bottle.

Lenny's pours a deep brown/orange color with a large and strong tan head. Bright hops sit below a large malt aroma in the nose. This is a malt forward DIPA, the rye is able to shine better this way, however it goes without saying that this is one hoppy brew. Spicy, fruity hops mesh wonderfully with the rather complex malty backbone. Great complexity, creamy texture in the mouth, lighter carbonation and very well balanced. The 10% ABV is very well hidden, very good drinkability for its size. Cheers to Shmaltz for bringing this one out year round and now in 4pks!

This beer poured a dark red clear amber color and formed a huge off white foamy head that left latticed lace as it slowly subsided. A small amount of carbonation is present. An aroma of malt, hops, caramel and a hint of pepper. The flavor was of malt, hops, caramel and hint of rye and some spices. The body was medium and the finish was bittersweet. A good beer, but as a DIPA, hops need to be stronger in the aroma and flavor than they are in this beer.

It pours a deep, clear amber, even almost ruby. Three fingers of pithy light tan head swell and sustain some time. Cascades of sticky lacing spill down the inside of the glass.

The aroma brings malt first and foremost, with raisins, caramel, vanilla, and a sweet, dusky earthiness. A passage of pine hops opens a bit, before alcohol splases in.

Upon tasting, there's malt, malt, and more malt, with caramel leading the march, followed by a vinous port touch and baked bread. A drier rye grain presence dips to a River Jordan of alcohol with a unique Scotch character. A hint of evergreen hops in, but is more sensed as bitter than actually tasted. The bitterness ramps up in the finish, lingering very dry and almost puckering, a marked 180 from the previous sweetness. It's muscular, with a monster malt profile.

Full bodied, it lays thick and sweet on the palate, though not truly cloying. A glow of hops dares to peek through.

It's just unique enough to be a fitting tribute to the late, great Lenny Bruce. Contrary to the label, there's nothing obscene here, but it does entail a mondo kick with all that grain and a beefy ABV. Still, it's well worth finishing the bottle. So, hey, here's to you Lenny.

22oz bottle poored into a pint glass.

Nice copper clored brew with amber highlights and a large sticky ivory head with some serious retention and very impressive lacing. Nice presentation on the bottle as well. Well the first thing that hits your nose is the hops right? no. Surprisingly its the malts, rye and crystal I beleive and there are alot of them overpowering the hops IMO, but still there is floral, grassy and piney smells sneaking by the well malted nose with some citrus rind as well. As in the nose its a huge sweet malt flavor up front then some spicey rye and alcohol come in with a sour grapefruit rind type of flavor. Also can pick out a little grassy and piney hop. Good mouth feel thick but not chewy while the hop oils leave an excellent slick behind letting you apreciate some of the huge hop bill of this beer that is overshadowed by the malts. Drinkability was very good and overall I really loved this beer although for an IIPA it seems to be tilted too much to the malt side than the hop side.

Appearance: Pours a hazy copper color with a bountiful head that would make ol' Lenny utter a four letter word; lacing all over the place and even after the passage of time, the head remains intact

Smell: Spry hoppy aromatics with tremendous malt complexity from the rye; lots of alcohol and plenty of piney hop resins; ultimately, it's all about the pine

Taste: The bitterness jumps all over the huge caramel malt base from the get-go, although the malt makes a determined effort to keep up, mid-palate, there is plenty of fruity flavor ranging from brandied cherries to pith and pine; the finish gets extremely bitter with some sour rye elements and a lot of alcohol

Mouthfeel: Thick and sticky with plenty of carbonation and warming alcohol

Drinkability: This is one powerful beer but its virtues limit its drinkability

Picked up a single 12 oz. bottle a week ago. I've had RIPA on Rye, so I'm looking forward at trying out a base beer. To my amazement, I think a lot of the robust nature of the RIPA on Rye comes from the base beer, not the Rye barrels it is aged inside of.

Appearance: Very pretty and active beer. I almost over poured this one. Nice tan head of 2+ fingers floated about a deep amber/brown body. The lacing on this glass sticks like that window spray snow you see around the holidays.

Aroma: Mix of orange and pine needles right away, but also a complex level sugar cookie maltiness too. Very nice scent here. I get the hop nose right off the bat, but this also has the smell of a malt bomb.

Taste: Malt-forward caramel doughiness at first, but then I get the rye malt to temper it quickly. After the swallow, more layers of complexity develop in the aftertaste. First, I get pineapple sweetness that is quickly anchored by a piney hop residue. The boozy heat develops the flavor. At 10% ABV, this one opens up quite a bit and has more fruity notes and less bitterness as you drink.

Mouthfeel: Creamy and sharp all at once. It pokes your palette like an aged cheddar, but melds into a creamy/smooth feeling flavor development/progression. Oily for sure, but that becomes an asset as this heats up from the booze. At first it is a bit cloying, but you are glad the beer clings as much as it does once it opens up.

Drinkability: I'm glad I don't have a whole 22 oz. to go through by myself. 12 oz was a perfect personal pour, but this should be drank as a Barleywine or liqueur, not a DIPA.

Overall: I liked this beer very much. Very robust and complex. Not one I'll pick up a lot of just because of how big it is in booze and flavor, but I can definitely see this one as a winter warmer in the next few months.

Poured from the bomber into a tulip glass the beer was a bright ruby red color with two solid fingers of white head. Carbonation streamed up from the bottom of the glass and thick lacing the whole way down one side of the glass.

The nose is a fresh hop aroma and a toasted grain. Very piney and some citrus coming thru as well. The nose smells sharp and the hop aroma is very prominant throughout. Some traces of alcohol, but this seems subdued in the aroma.

The taste delivers quite a bit of alcohol upfront. A steady heat hit the palate and lets its strength be known. Surprisingly a toasted malt flavors hits next and is semi-sweet with caramel like flavors. This quickly gives way to the hops intimated in the nose. A blast of hop flavor grabs the back of the tounge and linger on the palate for a while. Very piney and sharp the bitterness intensifies as the sample progresses. The hop bite in sharp on the palate, very fresh and at times really pushes the balance to the outer limit of enjoyability. If not for its steady malt presence, the beer would very much lack balance. The fresh hoppyness gradually mellos as the sample progresses, but associatied bitterness seems to remain and coat the palate with a bitter film. Despite its moments of super hoppy pockets, the beer remains balanced and "west coast" barley wine-ish.

Medium heavy mouthfeel. Malt character tends to lend some depth to the beer and makes it slightly chewy especially as it warms. Alcohol is present throughout.

A very nice cold weather sipper. Balance retains well enough to be enjoyed over time, but the beer seemed to have pockets where hop flavors screamed out. All in all, an enjoyable offering.

A: Pours a rich and thick burnt amber and orange coloring. A dark reddish and auburn tinted copper. The head is a massive chalky beige orgy of bubbles. Very dense with excellent retention. Cobwebs of lacing around the glass.

S: Very powerful aromas. Massive malts, yeast, and freshly baked rye bread. Caramel candies with some roasted peppers coated in honey. Subdued hints of orange peels and spiced grapefruit towards the back of the nose.

T: Rich malt taste with just the right amount of alcohol tinge. Caramel and buttered rye toast with some toffee and cherry sweetness. Citrusy and pine sap bitterness in the finish. All rounded off with thick fruitiness in each sip. Hints of oak, dark berries, and a bittering tang. The spiciness really becomes more apparent as this warms. Definitely complex and with the ABV it warms very nicely.

M: Creamy, syrupy, and full with moderate carbonation.

D: This is probably my favorite style of beer and He'Brew has put together a very interesting and successful twist to the DIPA. I could see how this might be hit or miss with some but it was a hit with me. It has a very experimental aspect to it that I liked. It's one of those beers that, if you dig the taste, you'll have finished a bomber before you know it and end up having music turned way up.

A big beer in a big bomber, very agressive but made for those that like DIPA's bordering on barleywines. The hops were massive, smelling citrucy and providing a nice balance in the nose with the rich malts. Sort of similar to a Stone 10th in that regard. I just spent about 10 days with no beers except Caribbean lagers, so this beer was a huge slap in the face, very strong and a little over-whelming. I recovered well and enjoyed it.

Serving: 22 oz. bomber

A: Pours nice and thick... "kerplunk" into my Duvel glass. Carbonation is evident, though subtle. One inch thick head; slowly dissipates. Color is clear, with hues of dark amber, reminiscent of honey or maple syrup.

S: Mild hops balanced by caramel malt aroma. Some fruit (banana); alcohol is present (duh at 10%!). No dominant citrusy hops.

T: The mild hops come through mildly in taste as well, a surprise considering the DIPA status. Don't get me wrong. It's pleasant for sure, especially how it finishes nicely with the malt backbone. After it warms, the alcohol and hops come through a bit more. Very nice.

M: Just as thick as it was poured. Carbonation is fine, as fine as it comes to being confused for lack of carbonation. It's pleasant.

D: For sure. Very pleased with this venture into a R.I.P.A.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Globe glass.

A. Poured 3 fingers of head. Great retention. Thick lacing. Color is a dark amber/brown.

S. Initial smell is rye malt. Has a semisweet smell to it. Underneath lies some hop bitterness.

T. Taste is also at first heavy on the rye. Nice rye malt flavor gives the beer a contrast of sweetness and bitterness from the hops, hence the name I guess. Hop flavor is not that prominent as is an overall bitterness.

M. Medium/full bodied. Medium/full carbonation. Lingering bitterness.

O. Overall a pretty interesting beer. Not really a DIPA in the traditional sense of what I think of one as. Maybe best described as right in the middle of a DIPA and a Black IPA. I like the flavor that rye provides, so this worked for me.

He'Brew Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A.

Appearance: 22 oz. bomber poured into a standard pint glass. This beer pours a nice dark amber color with a slightly off-white head. While pouring it out of the bottle I could tell that it was thicker than your average brew.

Smell: Sweet, like caramelized candy. This might be just me, but the first smell I thought of was white raisins.

Taste: Flavors are somewhat difficult to distinguish because there is a lot going on. There is a definite bread-like aftertaste which I'm pretty sure can be contributed to the rye, but it still has the sweetness the scent promised almost tasting like caramel/toffee hard candy. Also, that mysterious white raisin flavor makes its way through. If I were blindfolded and tasted this beer the only way I would really know it was a double IPA is the alcohol. I feel as if there is a good amount of bittering hops thrown in but not a huge amount of flavoring ones. In other words, they really doubled up on both malts and hops but the malts taking the forefront in this one.

Mouth feel: Nice and sticky, just how it looked like it would feel when I poured it. Very smooth for a double IPA, I can tell it is above average in ABV but I wouldn't have guessed 10%.

Drinkability: Surprisingly drinkable for this type of beer. If I had more than just one I'd probably drink then consecutively and enjoy the buzz.

Overall: I enjoyed this beer more than any other He'Brew I've had. Which I suppose doesn't say much since I've only tried two. I'm looking forward to trying more from this brewery. Mazal tov!

Dark copper with a dark amber core. Tall, thick, sticky, bright light khaki brown head. Perfumey-Scotch tape-pine sap hop nose, backed by spicy-sweet butterscotch, whiskey burn, and melted Werther's Original candies. Sweet, sugary toffee malt up front. Very spicy, peppery, anise-y, nutmeg jolt mid-palate. Bitterness increases as candied fruits and butterscotch chime in. Strong bitterness and spice in the finish. Warming, but doesn't feel like 10%. Watch out, eh? Medium-full body that coats the mouth well. Creamy feel. Very interesting beer with an interesting combination of spiciness, sweet caramel/butterscotch, and strong DIPA bitterness. I'm not sure if I am crazy about the strong spiciness, but a good beer nonetheless.

Deep reddish amber colour, 2 fingers of dense off white head, some nice tight lace left behind. Smell is of sweet caramel-bready notes, some citrus and pine, more of a general citrus as opposed to certain fruits, rye malt, almost barley wine like. Taste is of sweet bready malt, rye, big bitterness throughout, pine with some orange like citrus notes, sweet in the finish, lots of citrus in the aftertaste. Lots of resin and oil, light slightly prickly carbonation, full body. Nice malty and bitter DIPA, very different stylistically for what this is (much like Lenny Bruce himself) ABV well masked in taste but you can feel this in your chest, solid stuff overall.

A: dark amber almost tending towards brown. Good sustaining head and decent lacing
S: typical for a rye beer, with some notes of a black IPA. Little bready and woody, some notes of a fall walk in the woods.
T/M: starts with a little malt, but overtaken quickly by the "rye" taste. Notes of dates or figs in the beginning, then a wave of bitterness takes hold, dry and tugging on all parts of the mouth. Then, surprisingly, a mild (brown) sugary taste creeps back in. That fades to some earthy/woody tones as the mouth slowly dries and the feel lingers, slowly growing in bitterness.

O: with the first tastes, I had this rated about 1/3 point lower. As I analyzed more and more closely, though, I found it to be more complex than first tastes. Without much analysis, I think this is a bit bitter for my tastes. But for a longer, enjoy your beer session, I liked this beer in the long run.

Cask at Young Augustine's in Atlanta.

Pours an opaque copper color with a one-finger cream-colored head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of sweet caramel malts with solid amounts of breadiness and mild amounts of earthy and pine hops.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth and thick caramel malt flavors up front are joined by mild amounts of breadiness and even lighter amounts of rye flavors. Midway through the sip the malt flavors fade a bit with hints of soapiness, allowing pine hop flavors to work their way into things. The hops carry through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a very smooth thickness with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall this was close to being a very good beer but the malt flavors weren't quite crisp enough. Still, it's a good beer that's worth a shot.

This beer pours a clear mahogony with a giant tan foamy head. A nice looking brew. The smell is a very strong "bisquity" aroma with lighter scents of malt,alcohol,and grainy,if that's a word. The taste is a creamy mixture of alcohol, malt, rye, bitter hops, and a bready flavor thats just great. Not for the faint of heart, the alcohol is VERY in your face. But if you like a real alcohol and hop bite, this may be your beer. The m/f is heavy with a creamy feel that brings the mixture of flavors together beautifully. A very good beer from a West Coast brewery that's sometimes tough to find in CT.

This is my second Hebrew. Tried the Jewbalation first and quite impressed. This RIPA is another solid effort.

Attractive deep copper color with a nice creamy head that dissipates to a decent collar and nice lacing.

Hoppy nose, followed by a suprisingly, creamy muthfeel. Scorched orange peel and hoppy bitterness on the finish, all nicely balanced. THe 10% ABV is a seductive presence.

On tap " The Usual Place" Augusta GA

A: White head, on top of a clear ruddy copper color. Excellent head retention, maybe indicative to the rye, one of the best I have seen.

S: Opposite many of the other he'brew beers, where sweet malt is dominant - this one has a very strong spicy hops character, with the malt playing a supporting role. Somewhat bready but hops, hops, hops!

T: Hello hops, big bite up front, which gives way to sweet malt. Alcohol well-hidden, for this big beer, very tasty if you are a hop head and like pushing the style limits.
Mouthfeel: medium-heavy mouthfeel, dry acidic finish that aids drinkability a little, but the aftertaste lingers.

M: Excellent again for this big style, I like the medium mouthfeel all the way around, with medium carbonation for 10% ABV

O: I swear I could drink 3 of these, but not sure thats a good idea, as one pint was plenty to start my night! Great beer from contract brew (Saratoga) my favorite He' Brew for sure...

One whole bomber poured into a mass krug The liquid is a clear dark reddish amber with Great carbonation. The head is big 3 fingers, tan, rocky and laces to the max. Very impressive looking Indeed. The head retention is also extremely good, half way through the brew huge iceberg like malt puffs are drifting about in a one finger pad of foam.

The smell is mostly hoppy but the aroma of sweet rye bread also comes out.

The taste is good, a sweet rye bread malt will a good flavor of bitter hops. Odd back and forth with the balance between sweet malt and bitter hops. A slight alcohol taste also is present. I big beer to be sure.

The mouthfeel is good, thinks malty body and a great carbonation, could have a bit more of a cleansing bite.

The drinkability is good, a bit heavy but it is a big heavy brew, I would try this again, Prosit, MK

Poured the brew from a 22oz bomber into a Sam Adams tasting glass. It's a dark burnt-orange brown with a very thin head that tight, but fading fast -- not really what I like to see. The smell definitely has some citrus including heavy amounts of grapefruit, but also a malty (caramel?) character. After the first sip I'm a little surprised by the thick, syrupy consistency of the body and the medium-high level of carbonation. As soon as I got over that though I was able to enjoy the BOMB of hop flavor, though not of the same citrus quality I expected from its smell.

Still, if by "obscenely hopped" they mean "amazingly delicious" than I'd say the description is pretty accurate. While there is definitely a hefty hop presence in the initial sip, I think it's surprisingly well balanced; after a swish or two there is even a discernable malty sweetness to the flavor. The aftertaste definitely summons back its bitter roots, however, leaving a piney aftertaste.

Although I haven't had enough to have the alcohol become an issue, I think it's a little hefty to have more than just a (very, very enjoyable) bomber.
