Coney Island Lager
Shmaltz Brewing Company
Thank you to drxandy for the trade, great brew!
A murky, translucent amber color pours out of the bottle. Hints of orange and yellow highlights shine through when held to the light. A billowing off-white head with an orange-yellow shade erupts with decent retention. Decent lacing sticks to the glass throughout the experience.
Malt is the main attraction in the smell. Sweet caramel notes are prevalent. Also, there is a very slight, subtle sour odor that creeps in as well. However, the overall feel is sweet malty goodness.
As in the smell, the sweet caramel malt flavor takes hold up front. The caramel flavor is very strong and sweet. That flavor backs off, slightly, to allow a subtle, clean, and crisp hop flavor to dry out the finish. Along with the hop flavor is a subtle suggestion of alcohol, it's not strong, but it is detectable. A slight bitterness remains in the aftertaste, but the caramel malt flavor outweighs it, taking away from the dryness.
Coney Island has a medium to light body with limited carbonation, despite the massive head.
Outstanding drinkability: great balance and not too heavy. The low 5.5% ABV means one can enjoy more than one, the bomber is an excellent dosage.
