Another lost bottle from my cellar, aged much longer than intended, but apparently up to the task. Seven year old bottle, Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a thin dark khaki head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of dry caramel malt, dates, figs, raisins, brown bread, vanilla, light cardboardy oxidation and a hint of red berries (probably the pomagranite). Flavor follows, with dark caramel malt, figs, dates, raisins, vanilla and distinct pomagranite and light oak. Lingering dates and dark dried fruit, a touch boozy and a little syrupy. Medium bodied with light creaminess. Much closer in style to an English barleywine; lots of rich dark fruit and no real hops character. Rich and decadent; a bit sweet but not cloying and the deep body supports the sweetness. Another one I wish I had tried fresh to compare, but it has aged very well for over 6 years. There is oxidation, but at the expected level. Shmaltz does a great job on these big, multi malt barleywines. Enjoyable.

I have hung onto this one for 5 years!!! Pours a dense brown color with reddish highlights throughout. No head or lacing. Aroma is caramel malt, sweet fruit juices and the results of the bourbon barrel. Taste is more of the same with plenty of caramel malt, sweet fruit juices (figs and grapes and probably the pomegranate) and some bitterness from the bourbon and probably the hops. Mouthfeel is rich, somewhat syrupy with a bite from the bourbon barrel aging. No big alcohol burn, probably the result of 5 years of aging. Good barleywine and slow sipper. Probably had more bite years ago but nice and mellow now.

Large shared bottle in Atlanta.
Boozy, but not objectionable for style ... And for 13.4%ABV.
rich and complex. Seems at first to be a bit too sweet but further sipping soured it to be acceptably sweet.
Bordering on hot.

Had this in the cellar since 11…..why not crack-a-lack? Bottling date 9/7/2011. 5 malts, 7 hops in a
Pours a dirty brown colored ale with a big, beige foamy head. No lacing. Ring around the glass.
Big classic BW whiffs. Candied sugar, sweet malt, big brown sugar, molasses, caramel, chocolate, rye, mild grape juice and whiskey barrel booze goodness. Really good stuff going on here!
The taste is buttery, rye, spicy, caramel, vanilla and the ever-present barrel burn. A big beer that still is kicking the barrel loudly and making it a memorable session. Can the Shmaltz crew do no wrong?
Taste is silky smooth.
Overall this was a great beer experience. The booze is still radiating very nicely but blending great. Didn’t get much of the pomegranate juice, but all that was labeled on the label (fig juice, date juice, grape juice and rye whiskey barrels) was present in the session. I would definitely recommend drinking this soon and experiencing all that this should be…..strong booze presence and all. Just wish I had bought two instead of a bonehead-move one.

Appearance: Deep ruby brown, thin head.
Aroma/Flavor: Slight oxidation, brown sugar, touch of tomato and dark fruit. More vanilla and barrel on the palate than nose.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, sticky.

Bottled on 9.7.2011.
Wow, this has aged well. I remember the other bottle I had a few years ago being much more harsh. If you have any of these still sitting around you're sitting on gold, and I don't see these going down hill any time soon. Pours thick and syrupy and appearance is dark brown with ruby hues, thin whispy light brown lacing that retreats to the rim quickly. Smell is not far from typical barrel aged barleywine, caramel, dates, whiskey and wood, although the whiskey and wood has probably weakened due to the age. Taste is chocolate covered rye whiskey soaked raisin with a layer or caramel in the middle, although the rye is not as prominent as I remember when it was fresh. Mouth is thick and syrupy, coats the gullet as it goes down. I really hope Shmaltz brews this one again, soon.
