Bottled 9/7/11, so not a ton of age on a beer that will likely be good in a decade, but I ain't got that kinda time...

Pour produces a tan head that isn't huge and doesn't last long. Liquid is a super dark, rather luscious looking dark brown that speaks as much to the fruit juices used (pomegranate, fig, date and grape) as the dark malts.

Aroma-wise this is so up my alley it...it...well, it's so up my alley I don't even have a witticism to describe how up my alley it is. It's big, it's bold, it's boisterous, but also balanced. Moving onto the "C"s, it's complex but controlled. Daring but debonair. And even though whiskey is not personally my thing, it's here as but one component of an overall much more layered aroma. The whiskey-soaked wood, the 5 malts, the 7 hops, all the fruit juices, the alcohol...this could have, quite literally, been a big HOT mess, but it's not. And this is why I love Shmaltz so much, as I feel they do big beers with the absolute best of them.

Right, the taste. Pretty much tantalizing. And as balanced as the aroma. Yes, there's alcohol presence here, but considering all the sugars the yeast had to munch on, not only is the alcohol merely a sensibly-balanced flavor component, but any potentially overbearing sweetness is somehow, somehow kept in check. Add layered slabs of whiskey-ed wood, real vanilla ice cream (emphasis on the cream), every single fruit juice identifiable and in harmony, and hops providing a pinch of acidity without pushing in too much to the hugely malt-loaded base, well, this is just terrific. And with all of that happening, and remembering all the barrel-aged barleywines where the barleywine itself gets lost, here it does not. It remains a barleywine of purity, despite all the variables and adulterations. Possible? In the hands of Shmaltz, apparently so.

The feel is a silky, super-round, super-luscious, absolutely elegant thing. Thick but not sticky or gross. A top-notch texture that equals the aroma as this beer's "couldn't be better" feature.

One of the best by this brewery, and one of the best beers of 2011, easily. Want more. Not right this moment, but yeah, I want several more bottles. This is just too good.

32oz fill from Green's Piney Grove, poured into a Stone Old Guardian glass.

A: Pours a deep brown body intermingled with ruby hues, whilst forming a half-inch of beige head that quickly recedes to a ring and spotty cap. The look is deep inviting.

S: Plenty of good aroma on this one. There's lots and lots of vanilla, folded in with bourbon, dark, earthy fruits, and a bit of alcohol. The nose is deep and inviting.

T: Even more vanilla than the nose lets on, along with bourbon, dark, earthy fruits, and bit of alcohol peeking through. The barrel has been good to this beer. The vanilla is soft and creamy, as is the bourbon, while the dark fruits slowly move along the tongue and linger in the finish. One of the best dark fruit flavors I've gotten from any beer, regardless of style. The taste is deep and inviting.

M: Full, creamy, just the slightest bit syrupy--deep and inviting.

O: Deep and inviting, of course. This is a fantastic barrel-aged barleywine; there's clearly a solid base beer here, but the rye whiskey barrels 'take it to the next level' without steamrolling the barleywine beneath. Get it if you can find it.

A - Pours like the color of a cola with a one finger tan head. Doesn't seem thick or viscous.

S - The whiff at first is a big dose of bourbon, vanilla, leather and followed by dark fruits with a sweeter ending.

T - The taste is flipped from the smell... Big vanilla, molasses and dark fruit taste up front and the encore is a bourbon & oak finish. Very complex & rich.

M - Medium to full mouthfeel that's sticky and somewhat cloying.

O - Very good, very complex, very rich... I'm glad I waited to crack this as age seemed to do it wonders.
