To stand out in today's IPA culture, brewers have a lot of tricks at their disposal. They can use odd grains or unorthodox hops. They can add fruits, spice or even aged them on wood. Or- they can just make them better! That's the route that Shmaltz takes.

Pouring with a hazy golden-peach color, the beer comes alive with a softly diffused glow. Its haze is a testament to its unadulterated character to come. As its creamy off-white head separates from its body below, the froth is a dense blanket that skirts the glass evenly across the glass and deeply into the session, lacing with well defined concentric rings as the beer fades.

Its juicy and tangy fruit flavors are a testament of not-so-timid hop additions. Red grapefruit, nectarine, passion fruit, mango, pineapple and even a pep of lemon and white grape decorate the peripheries while its supportive malt structure seems to give the fruit impressions a riper and more plump character. Its simply mouth-watering.

Similarly in taste, the beer's early sweetness is with caramel, honey and with a charming note of angel food cake. Its hoppy rise comes on fast as the ale lands on the middle palate. The onslaught of tangy citrus, sweet tropical, and racy orchard fruit culminate in a way to suggest "cream sickle" or "Hawaiian punch". Its light acidity evokes a nearly teeth churning effect. Yet as Hop Manna trended bitter and dry, it does so with such supple smoothness and delicacy until it arrives at a softly resinous taste of torn pine needles and citrus pith.

Its medium-light body is creamy-dry early and often. Deeply embedded carbonation gives a lightness to its texture and chases the taste into a tangy acidity, resinous dryness and calming warmth.

Hop Manna is truly like a miracle taste, coming from the heavens and gracing the whimsy of hop heads everywhere. Guilty as charged!

This poured with a very clean caramel color with tiny bubbles streaming through its light hue. The head was bright white with an impressive density and decent retention.

The nose holds very soft or faint aromas of lemon, pithy rinds, spruce, caramel malt and buttery cracker.

The taste is less lemony an more to the rind, pine, spruce and cracker malt. Small bites of citrus, maybe orange can be discerned.

The feel is quite dry but not particularly astringent. There is a thinness but it helps achieve an easy drinkability.

This is a tame but tasty IPA, easy enough for the beginner, and maybe too tame for the Hop Head.

Pours a cloudy, golden/maize color. One inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of hops, sweet malt, sugar, hint of caramel malt, hint of earthy malt, and a hint of biscuit. Fits the style of an American IPA. Mouth feel is very sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of hops, sweet malt, hint of caramel malt, and a hint of pale malt. Overall, overly simplistic, too sharp in the mouth feel, and almost gritty.

A: Deep honey golden with a foamy white head. Beautiful.

S: Nectary orange, tangerine and citrus peel in a delicious nose.

T: Tastes like hop juice. Orange, lemon, tangerine and bitter citrus peel. Dry.

M: Medium bodied and smooth enough.

O: Pretty good. Flavor could have been better, more akin to the nose. I love tangerine, and rarely see enough of it in the flavor of some of the beers that I've had that have it in the nose.
