Borrowing a few tricks from the Brits, the Brown Ale finds favor among modern craft beer lovers- but not without undertaking a kick-ass face lift! Toasty supplants nutty. Hops pull forward. And dryness promotes a boost in strength and a recession of sweetness. And that taste is alive and well in Shmaltz's brown beer.

Like any well-respecting the beer is, well... brown. Dark in its hue, the appearance of walnut with deep garnet highlights peaking through. Slightly hazy, the testament of hops are known. As its creamy froth builds upon the beer, it does so for the duration of the glass, casting broken rings of lace behind with each sip.

Bold aromas abound, approaching roast but careful not to step over- the ale saturates the olfactory sense with chocolate, toast, toffee, light coffee and walnut. Hints of brown sugar and citrus mingle about as its scent sides with dry toast rather than sweetness.

To taste, the beer layers on the palate with dark toffee, light molasses and heavily charred toast to balance. Its nutty influences are bitter and robust as toasted walnut flavors thrive on the palate. However, the simple brown keeps piling on complexity as its hop presence is felt- burnt citrus peels rise in the middle, then morph brilliantly into smooth woody and piney bitterness in closure.

Medium bodied, and perhaps trending slightly lighter, the beer's sweetness is moderate and is easily cast aside by toasty-dry malt elements, heightened carbonation to carry its residual sweetness away, and by its drying hop sensations. Count in its mild alcohol warmth and we see that there's a lot of variety that this simple Brown offers.

In true American-ized fashion, the drier, toastier and hoppier influence makes the style beg for food- anything from barbecue to cheeseburgers to stews- its simply an all-pourpose ale.

Served in a nonic pint. Certified Kosher.

Dominating, three-finger's width cap of tawny foam, the creamy suds recede slowly and leave behind some lacing. A dark brown body has crimson highlights poking through the glass.

The nose is chalky milk chocolate, some marzipan, a nutty almond malt, and a grassy hoppiness. This may be a little too sweet when it should have err'd on the side of roasty.

The palate has that sweet marzipan and nutty almond-like quality that was on the nose. The combo does just not work well. The palate also has an astringent mineral-like and roasted quality that is also not very pleasant. The finish is even bitter thanks to that astringent roast.

Medium-light body and more crisp than dry, this beer is slightly overcarbonated with hard bubbles on the tongue, too tingly.

This brown ale is unbalanced and can't decide if it wants to be sweet or roasty, and both qualities get muddled, neither complimenting the other. This offering is one that can easily be skipped.

Poured into a Pint Glass

S - Smells of chocolate, some bitterness bites you, sweet malts.

A - Deep brownish-mahogany color with a brown half inch head.

T/M - Malt assault, medium to heavy carb, some mild hops linger throughout the whole experience. Getting almost a metallic like taste though towards the end of the swallow...i could live without that.

Overall, This is a decent brown ale. Very drinkable, but not crazy about this. It really lacks flavor in my opinion. Ive had a few other Nut brown ales that are way better then this. You need to check out Rogue's Hazlenut Brown Nectar....same style..but drink them side by side. you will see what i mean.

Bottle into pint glass.

A: 2 finger head that dwindles down to a few bits here and there and a bit of lacing. Body is dark a nice cola color with perfect clarity.

S: Quality malts, fresh grains, and the slightest hop in there.

T: Nice chocolate and CaraMunich malts, ends a nice bitter and refreshing cascade hop note.

M: Very nice medium feel.

O: My first bier from this brewer. Very good. I look forward to having more.

Pours a dark brown with a reddish hue. The label lists an interesting malt bill that even includes chocolate malt. Hops are Warrior, Cascade and Liberty.

Sweet and "nutty" aroma greets the nose. The chocolate malt shines though and makes a good contrast.

This theme repeats in the taste. Very sweet and nutty. Hops stay in the background, allowing the malts to steal the show.

Chocolate malt steals the show at the back of the throat. Clean finish.

Very taste nut brown ale. You have to try it.
