A thick dark brown that's not quite motor oil thick or dark, this beer grows a brown head up to about a finger high. Retention is good, as the head doesn't fade much. Lacing is left in patches to the middle of the glass and a little beyond.
There's lots of complexity in the aroma. A little bit balsamic with caramel sweetness, some rye spiciness and mildly earthy notes, and some dark fruits, it foretells the complexity and depth that will be found in the flavor. Alcohol is well masked.
The flavor opens up even more, and it's such a good mix of a little tart, a little sour, a little sweet, and full of flavor with a great display of skill being shown in the masking of overly alcoholic notes between the high ABV and the whiskey and bourbon barrels. The earthiness and gentle spicy note are just enough underneath, as I imagine it's just what's pulled from those rye whiskey barrels. Delicious.
This is a big-bodied, robust, and smooth beer. A strong ale it is, but it doesn't overwhelm anymore in the feel than in the smell or taste. Even a little crisp, it brings a nice bit of dryness into the finish.
This beer and its overall reviews make me wish more BAs would rather have depth in their beer than just being overpowered by it.

From notes 2/3/13: Pours a deep brown-black with ruby highlights when held to the light producing 2+ fingers of finely bubbled, tan, moderately lasting head that leaves sticky streaks and webs of lace as it recedes. Aroma is bourbon/whiskey, sweet with notes of vanilla/oak wood, dark and milk chocolate with hints of molasses, dark fruits and cherries. Quite complex in the nose. Taste is sour dark fruit (heavy to fig and prune), cherries, whiskey, wood/vanilla, molasses, bitter dark and milk chocolate awash in a burnt brown sugar background. Aftertaste is whiskey and chocolate, bitter and sour. More complex and robust than the already complex nose. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy bodied with moderate carbonation, smooth and a little syrupy.

Dark cola pour, thin off beige cola head, aroma of dark fruit, cola and alcohol.

Taste was a sweet blend of beers, a little bit of everything, pomegranite, oak, cinnamon, bitter hops, alcohol, citrus, figs, plums, dates.

Not bad stuff at all.

Update: 1/25/2016
Poured into a snifter from a bomber. Bottling date 3/6/2012. Picked up a bootle from a local bar. Just a little bit funky - a slight and pleasant tartness is present but not a defining characteristic. Notes of prune, raisin, white chocolate, peach nectar, pecans, pomegranate, and a hint of bourbon from the barrel aging. Tastes a lot like a quad with fruit additions to mellow it out and bring out the sweetness.

The taste is big, full bodied, carbonation on the low side. Color is black with copper-brown at the edges. The beer has a plentiful dried fruit profile with an overwhelming juice sweetness. However, for only 9.8% it is a very complex and pleasing blend of five BA beers.

bottling date, 3/6/2012....dark clear appearance, no head and weird fruity smell, tasted like extremely sweet, funky cough syrup? I like shmaltz, maybe this was a bad bottle?

Interesting beer - different, complex, but maybe a bit too many things going on all once. I enjoyed it less as I sipped it.

Really great sour ale. Pleasantly surprised by the complexity of this "dark ale". I am looking forward to later releases and glad to see He'Brew making some quality brews!
