Poured into a pint glass. Bottleneck label says Batch No. 001/999 and Bottling date 3/6/2012.

A- Pours a full-on opaque black color with a 1/4 inch tan head that fails to retain long before it shrinks away to a paper-thin ring around the edge of the glass and a partial sheet of surface foam. Lacing barely hangs on long.

S- Intense burst of raisin, almond and pecan. Some sweetness in the context of molasses and syrup.

T- Heavy, deep booze bite in the front with a sweet start and a bitter finish. So, right off the bat, I'm getting the Jewbelation, Lenny's RIPA and Messiah nut brown. Loads of syrupy malt mesh with the alcohol and slam down on the palate. A lot of tastes going on at once but not necessarily complex enough to achieve much depth of flavor.

M- Sluggish and viscous with low carbonation fueling that sentiment. Syrup continues to be the word that pops up as the beer leaves plenty of residue behind on the tongue.

O- Definitely a sipper, and definitely an experiment. Just a bit too heavy and strong for the ABV and kind of all over the place in terms of flavor balance.

Pours a maroonish amber with an off white head. Aroma is dark fruits, a touch of roastiness, minimal rye spiciness, and minor bourbon barrel presence. Flavor threw me for a loop from what I was expected based on the aroma, in a very good way. Sweet and slightly tart raspberry, a little pitted dark fruit, sourdough bread, a toached of roastiness and chocolate, rye, and a touch of bourbon barrel. Medium bodied mouthfeel, with nothing unique about it. Overall, solid and enjoyable beer.

On tap at the Chimes, Covington, LA

A: Blackish with a frothy tan half-finger head that sits. Lots of thick lacing.

S: Fruity, featuring cherries and plums, vanilla and caramel with a woodiness.

T: A big surprise when the sour tartness popped up. Then things turned a bit more predictable with tasty molasses, chocolate, caramel and some bitterness.

M: Medium with medium carbonation.

O: Not what I was expecting. The sourness really turned me off, whereas others may like it. A really weird taste. Not really to my liking.

On tap at Old Bay in New Brunswick, NJ. Served in a snifter.

Appearance: Pours a dark ruby red, almost black. About 1/2 finger of head on top. Not much lacing.

Smell: Sweet whiskey, some fruit, and a faint whiff of brett.

Taste: Sweet whiskey, vanilla, and molasses up front. Dominated by jammy fruit in the middle. And just enough tart sour in the end to balance things out. Very nice.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a long finish. Just a little bit of mouth pucker at the end.

Overall: Very good and very unique - a nice blend of barrel aging and sourness. Everything works really well together.

Poured from a 22oz. bomber.

Pours a deep, deep red almost rusty brown. Two fingers of tan head lingers for quite sometime, before disappating to a thing ring. Bubbles are small and tight.

Smells, well funky. Surprised by the sourness and until I tasted it it left me a bit confused. Smells of oak, cherries, jam, plumbs, vanilla, caramel and a bit of bakers chocolate.

Tastes straight jammy chocolate. So much dark fruit. I bought this on a whim and had no idea it was supposed to be sour. It is tart, but not overly so. On this warm night in NC it's very refreshing. Mouth feel is pretty much spot on for the taste.

Overall I really love this surprise. Will probably purchase another and sit on it for a few months to a year and compare notes.

Not sure why all the negative reviews on this one honestly; it has funky in the name so I figure to expect something a little off the normal path.

A: Pours like a solid Stout with a little bit of head and minimal lacing. Completely dark with no transparency.
S: you can smell the sourness on the nose letting you know this is not the normal dark ale. Some Cherries, wet oak, anise, bitter chocolate and wheat.
T: much the same as the nose with the sour wood, slight bitter chocolate, tart fruit
M: Sits surprisingly medium which makes this very drinkable for me. Medium carb.
O: This was a pleasant surprise for me personally. The sour dark ales are not very common and this is one of the more drinkable ones in the style that I have tried. Shmaltz did a good job with this but unfortunately I was only able to get a growlers worth. I bet this one ages well.

got the single 12oz in the gift box this year.

i was not expecting a sour with this one, but it hit the spot. I have started to enoy the sour imperial stouts and love sour brown ales. this was that combined with far more complexity.

A-dark brown/black with some transparency, but not much. poured with a beautiful fine head that dissipated rather quickly leaving a ring around the glass.

S-funky. the smell was my first indication that this wasn't merely a typical blend of whisky barrel aged beers. you can smell the tart and funkiness. can't believe i didn't figure it out with the name alone. smell of acidity and mild sweetness. very subtle vanilla notes.

t-i had a sour imperial stout from a local brewpub this past year and it reminds me of that, except with far more complexity and body. sweet up front, with sour coming in on the back of the tongue. barrel comes in later with vanilla coming in ever so slightly. more sour cherry than sour apple. a good, nay GREAT malt backbone to this beer. i can see lovers of O'dell Meddler really enjoying this beer as well. great complexity present in both. very hard to define the flavors I'm tasting in this beer.

m-love it. body, but not oily. smooth, the alcohol is not perceivable. the acidity from the sour isn't overwhelming, and my teeth don't feel like chalk sticks halfway through. very smooth, and a pleasure to drink for something so sweet, malty, and tart.

o-i want more of this. want to split a bomber with a few friends. very much enjoying...now i'm going to go get a cut of extra sharp cheddar.
