22 oz. bomber poured into a Burley Oak snifter (Batch/Cases: 001/999; Bottle Date: 3/6/12)

A: Nice minimal tan head with a deep dark brown body that is close if not pitch black.

S: Excellent smell on the swirl. Lots wood and bourbon notes. Lots of scents but they are all quite sweet smelling. Quite a lot of raisin and roasty notes as well.

T: WTF is that flavor!? It's so "sweet" that it almost gets you to pucker as if it is tart/sour. I almost don't want to take another sip to fully detail out the experience. I got that shiver that you get when you are trying to eat/imbibe something bad that you don't want to but kind of have to. So, after that all that I guess I am warming up to it a little bit. It seems that the pucker is from an actual bit of tart/sour/funk. It gets much better the more you drink though. Lots of raisin. It really tastes like a syrupy cola, it makes me think that this is what the stuff in the box for the fountain soda (the syrup) would taste like. It really tastes more like a wine (which my mother said).

M: It is a bit thin but comes across as syrupy with just a prickling of carbonation.

O: This is a very surprising beer starting off. It comes on strong and then settles down as your palate adjusts and comes to terms with what you are drinking. I wasn't expecting the tart/sour notes, which is confusing coming with the strong, sweet notes of a BA stout. This sure is one funky beer. It's good but surprising and not another one I would go out of my way to acquire again. However, I wonder what it would be like with a fair amount of age on it. (1,588 characters)

Opaque molasses brown with a thin cinnamon head.

Overwhelming scent of brown sugar, molasses, and cola.

Holy shit, it tastes like Dr. Pepper if it were a beer. Prunes, brown sugar, and a little blackstrap molasses.

Mouthfeel is sticky and cloyingly sweet.

With all the different beers and barrel aging going on here, it doesn't have the depth I was expecting. It was good, but all their other Jewbelations are much better. (430 characters)

Funky Jewbelation, bomber bought at Whole Foods Columbus Circle for circa $11.99.

Appearance: Poured into my new and massive Daan Duvel glass, the Funky pours dark and black and opaque like an Imperial Stout, with a perfect one-finger head that lasts long enough. Some lacing and good retention.

Smell: Sweet and sour, with lots of funkiness! A clear vinous aroma all around, with grape juice and Welch's fruit jelly. Barnyard, fresh horse shit/pee near Central Park and smashed cherries. Whiskey overtones all around. Between engaging and unpleasant...

Taste: Dark fruit, Concord-grape puree. Then some hops and liquid chocolate. Graininess, more whiskey flavor and some barrel. Sour all around. Outrageous sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Full body and flavor, medium-to-low carbonation. Sticky, chewy, sweet and heavy. A definite sipper, can easily overwhelm.

Overall: Drinkability is low here. So sweet and thick and massive... easily my lowest fav of all of Hebrew's barrel-aged releases. Would not seek again, but glad to have tried it twice. (1,045 characters)

A: Pours a very dark brown with a huge bubbly light brown head. Head retention is excellent, doesn't fade at all for the first few minutes. After several minutes it finally settles down, leaving literally zero lacing, oddly enough. Never really fully fades though, leaving a 1/4" head at all times.

S: Strong bourbon elements. Molasses, caramel, toffee and vanilla. Loaded with dark fruits too.

T: Heavy bourbon and super sweet malt. The flavors compliment each other decently. Again, loads of molasses, caramel, toffee along with some brown sugar. Getting sweet fig and dates in there too. Some oaky vanilla in the aftertaste. Super sweet throughout, almost as bad as Jewbelation 15.

M: Super heavy and thick, feels like it should be 12-15%. Syrupy with low carbonation.

O: Another huge and heavy beer from Schmaltz (just had Jewbelation 15 the other night). This one is just a touch lighter but still super over-the-top sweet and heavy. (945 characters)

Appearance: Deep brown glass glows a bit but has no clarity. Halo of tan tiny bubbles holds but doesn't really lace.

Smell: Dark malt extract with a sour cherry twang. A powerful nose gives you bang for buck.

Taste: A real kick in the teeth this one. Sour brett cherry bourbon malt bomb on aisles 4-9. As I get somewhat accustom to the tidal wave, a lot of smokey charred barrel starts to come in, as well as a heady alcoholic slap.

Mouthfeel: Cask to still carbonation drags this back a bit. There's plenty of body to support a little fizz.

Overall: Sour beers don't sit well with me. Love the taste, don't like the indigestion later. Still, was glad to get a nose and taste of this monster. If the Sour doesn't scare you, it's an experience you shouldn't pass up.

A: Pours a very dark raisin brown with a thick light brown head that faded into a thin collar leaving wispy lace.
S: Tart cherries, dark fruits, lightly tart and dry tannins and a bit of roasted malt.
T: I get a hint of boozy alcohol, a light sourness, caramel, toffee, fruity cough syrup, prunes, bit of chocolate, woody and a leathery finish. Not as much barrel as I was expecting.
M: Greasy feeling, low carbonation, full body, with a few gritty tannins.
O: Kinda underwhelming. Good flavor but lacking. (557 characters)

Picked this up recently since the big Shmaltz beers have been very good to us. 22 oz. bomber split with my wife after realizing, for the 935th time, that people are generally assholes. I'm not sure why this is, but it's true. Yeesh.

Pour is...well, mine's a lot shorter than my wife's, if I ever committed that sin I'd get an earful! Dark brown enough to kiss up to light black. Surprisingly frothy for a big strong ale. Bourbon is hearty on the nose, buttressed with a sigh of underlying funk. Simple but nice.

Funky Jewbelation is one odd character. Up front there's bourbon, but it short-circuits in a hurry. Big, tart fruits, slight souring cherry, offset strangely by a big helping of sweetness that strays into cloying. The barrel vanishes & those fruits have serious staying power in the aftertaste. Kind of like herpes. Heavy beer.

Well, this is uncomfortable. Not a bad effort, but the tart makes the barrel almost disappear, yet at the same time manages to balance the jazz with sweetness that goes a bit over the top. This might balance out more with age. As is, pretty good beer that feeds into the Shmaltz shtick & is, at least, unique. (1,155 characters)

Right off you can tell this is something different. Six of He'Brew's ales, each of which had been aged a different period of time, and in different barrels, all combined for one strong ale. Is it the Harry Buffalo of beers? Or the Friday school cafeteria "meatloaf casserole" made up of the Monday through Thursday leftovers? Let's find out...

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into an oversized snifter. The bottle bears a bottling date of March 6, 2012, and states this is Batch No. 001/999. Pours a dark cola brown, with minimal tan head that survives as a thin wisp on the surface of the ale. This is a a very still, sedate looking brew, with no apparent carbonation keeping things active.

Smells quite malty, with notes of blackstrap, chocolate, whiskey, and dark rum. Smells a bit like one of those small bottles of extract you pull out once a year at Christmas to help flavor the spiced cookies.

Taste is much sweeter than expected, with a bit of a medicinal tang, like cherry cordial. The black licorice flavor carries through with notes of dark molasses, like Black Jack gum. The ale sweetens as it warms, bringing out hints of maple and brown sugar. A bit boozy, this has a bitter, dry finish that leaves you a bit thirsty.

Very full bodied, with a cloying sweetness that turns the tongue dry and leaves the teeth feeling as if they're wearing socks. The tang is prickling the roof of my mouth a bit.

Intense and full flavored, this is a very slow sipper of an ale. There's a lot going on, and this will definitely wear at you if you try to tackle it too quickly. Plus, clocking in at 9.8%, you begin to feel this just a few sips in. Enjoyable enough, but hard to finish at 22 ounces. (1,692 characters)

A- Pours a full-on opaque black color with a 1/4 inch tan head that fails to retain long before it shrinks away to a paper-thin ring around the edge of the glass and a partial sheet of surface foam. Lacing barely hangs on long.

S- Intense burst of raisin, almond and pecan. Some sweetness in the context of molasses and syrup.

T- Heavy, deep booze bite in the front with a sweet start and a bitter finish. So, right off the bat, I'm getting the Jewbelation, Lenny's RIPA and Messiah nut brown. Loads of syrupy malt mesh with the alcohol and slam down on the palate. A lot of tastes going on at once but not necessarily complex enough to achieve much depth of flavor.

M- Sluggish and viscous with low carbonation fueling that sentiment. Syrup continues to be the word that pops up as the beer leaves plenty of residue behind on the tongue.

O- Definitely a sipper, and definitely an experiment. Just a bit too heavy and strong for the ABV and kind of all over the place in terms of flavor balance. (1,094 characters)

Pours a maroonish amber with an off white head. Aroma is dark fruits, a touch of roastiness, minimal rye spiciness, and minor bourbon barrel presence. Flavor threw me for a loop from what I was expected based on the aroma, in a very good way. Sweet and slightly tart raspberry, a little pitted dark fruit, sourdough bread, a toached of roastiness and chocolate, rye, and a touch of bourbon barrel. Medium bodied mouthfeel, with nothing unique about it. Overall, solid and enjoyable beer. (487 characters)

This is another barrel aged blend from Schmaltz that tastes really similar to other Jewbelations I've had, which is to say pretty middle of road in a world of barrel aged goodies. Easy to find and reasonably priced, so definitely worth a try. Looks like coca cola, almost exactly. The aroma could fool me on a hot day too, very cola like, with a bit of sweetness and dark candied fruit. A bit of "barrel" character creeps in as it warms, but nothing too distinct. The taste, again, is eerily similar to liquor spiked coca cola. You get some definite sweetness, a little bourbony vanilla, and a definite kind of twang in there, almost like it was aged on cherries. Is this the 'Funky' part? Its not out place (read: Cherry Cola!). Feel is very good, medium/full body with low carbonation. Slick and not syrupy. Unfortunately the more I think about this beer the less I enjoy it, so I'm going to end this review. Not amazing, not bad. (932 characters)

Got an 8oz pour at Mosaic in Astoria. Man, this is a big beer. Honestly, I think it could do with less blending. It's a rich beer, but not much can stand out. I couldn't even tell off the bat that this had whiskey barrel aging. It's sweet and almost a little juicy with dark fruit up front. The dark barley adds a slight roast and eventually a little barrel vanilla rolls in. Still, it'd be easy to mistake this for a massive brown ale. The hops are mild, the malts and dark and fruity, and the barrel character is very light. (526 characters)

Poured into a tulip glass deep black with thin tan head.

The nose has strong bourbon scent that is over powering sweet malted barley scents.

The taste is just odd . . . nothing that I can put my finger on other than bourbon and whisky. It tastes just the way it probably should, a mixture of strong beers.

Mouthfeel is dry and low in carbontation.

Overall, this sounded like a good idea on paper . . . but . . . (444 characters)

Poured a very dark color with a little bit of a thin, off-white head that dissipated quickly. Scent is sweet malt, slight liquor and a hint of soy sauce. Flavor is incredibly sweet malt, hints of chocolate underneath, some slight raisin and sour notes and a bit of woody and liquor flavors from the barrel aging. Mouthfeel is sticky, with low carbonation. It sips pretty, well, but it is almost too sweet, syrup like in most regards. A nice experiment, but it could do with some lowering of the sweetness and a little more roasted flavors and hop character. (557 characters)

S - A huge funk aroma and a big tartness are evident up front with some lighter oak and chocolate aromas hidden in the background.

T - The tartness and funk from the nose are much less evident but are still a big component of the palate. Oak, whiskey, char and roast with traces of dark fruit.

Pours black with a ruby hue when held to the light. Finger length head that dissipates somewhat quickly and leaves a ring of lacing. Nice carbonation which is kind of surprising. Smells of lots of dark fruits like raisin, plums, and figs. Also get some chocolate, oak, tiny bit of whiskey, more bourbon, slight funkiness to it. Not as boozy as I thought, but still some alcohol presence on the nose. Taste is pretty complex. Starts with sweet raisins and chocolate along with some bourbon. Almost get a salty, funky taste. Then the malt comes in and provides more sweetness, as well as breadiness, some nuttiness, oak, still more bourbon. Then the finish is more breadiness and a toast-like quality, tons of dark fruit like more raisins and plums, funkiness, molasses, carmel, definitely some heat from the whiskey. The whiskey takes the place of the bourbon on the finish. Not as much of a mess as I thought it would be, as the flavors meld nicely on the finish as it warms up; however, it is quite cloying. Pretty full body with a creamy and sticky mouthfeel. Although this is a year old, some age could do this beer some good. Not bad. (1,138 characters)

Wow. There is a lot going into this one. Hard for me to pinpoint everything down here...except for the bourbon and whiskey..

SIx ales blended and all aged in mostly rye whiskey then the rest in bourbon barrels.

I wanted to love this one and on some sips, it seemed I did, but on others I didn't really enjoy it that much.

As it warmed up I started tasting some sour cherries.

This was fun to try, but in the end not my favorite. (467 characters)

A - near black and impenetrable, two fingers of mocha head retained nicely
S - a milky sweet & sour aroma, rye, toffee, and mild hops, definitely funky
T - this thing is all over the place, the milky sweetness is prominent, rye and woody notes, mild molasses, a hint of herbal hops
M - big and somewhat chewy, low carbonation, sticky sweet, with just a little dryness from the alcohol
O - I think this is a case of too much of a good thing, big respect for the forward thinking, but it seems unfocussed and that comes through in the flavours, but still worth a try for any curious beer advocate (594 characters)

Kinda on the dark side of mahogany, with modest tan head. Looks good enough. I'm more interested in how she tastes and smells.

Sour and sweet, with a jumbled mess of other influences that all sound awesome but in this case, to me, don't gain any synergistic benefit and just don't work as that well together. I sense cherry, barrels, grainy malty sweetness, and fairly strong boozy esters.

Tastes pretty much like the nose, except that the prominent sourness and cloying bitterness are more prominent. Maybe a tad too bitter as well, or it just doesn't balance right to me.

Good carbonation, full body, medium viscosity and some bitterness in the finish.

I really appreciate the effort and will try any of these that I find if I have the resources. But this one didn't work as anywhere near as well for me as the last one-off Jewbelation (don't recall which) I had. The taste is, to me, worthy of the strong descriptor cloying. And that didn't mesh well with the sourness. And those two elements overpowered most everything else. But I commend Shmaltz for the creative attempt. (1,082 characters)

a: This was all but black. It poured with a medium sized head that faded to a thin film.

s: Odd, but mostly in an appealing way. I find vinous soy sauce, some fruity chocolate, cheries, tobacco, vanilla, and sweet, sugary booze.

t: Sweet brown sugar up front and then mildly funky, vaguely chocolatey, vinous dark fruit. Plenty of booze and hints of tobacco and soy sauce at the end.

m: Big and chewy.

o: Well, its different. It just doesn't quite come together for me. Glad I tried it but I don't want another. (515 characters)

I asked my beer store guy what was new and different, and he recommended the Funky Jewbelation. He was correct on both. It's certainly new (Batch 001/999 cases, bottled March 2012), and a barrel-aged blend of 6 different beers is certainly a notable effort. I value the creativity; and, echoing what an earlier reviewer stated, the price to value ratio was right on. So, it was really a no-brainer.

Immediately, the question which needed to be answered is the whole greater than the sum of its parts? Personally, I think the answer is "no." That's not to say this isn't a noteworthy effort and a beer worth trying. To that, I'd say "yes" on both counts. I just think it fell short a little bit.

It poured reddish brown with an amazing creamy white head, that quickly dissipated, leaving no lacing.

The smell was very good: caramel, bread, brown sugar, mild bourbon.

The taste and mouthfeel was syrupy and a bit sweet. It was a little cloying, as somehow the flavors weren't quite working together.

Overall, I ended up sitting it down and forgetting about it, as I watched the NCAA Basketball Championship game. But, when I went back to it, it still tasted fine at room temp, which a good strong ale should. So, there you go.

It reminded me mostly of Thomas Hardy's Ale, if your tastes run that way. (1,305 characters)

[Suggested Glassware: Snifter]

The pour was a murky dark brown almost black with a large (2-3 finger) light brown rocky head that reduced to a thick film with a medium collar and had excellent sheeting of lacing.

The aroma was of a roasted chocolate malt and a sweet doughy yeast with notes of coffee, chocolate, toffee, dark fruit (Raisons and plums), bourbon cask and a touch of vanilla.

The taste was rather malty and extremely sweet with hints of chocolate and toffee from the onset with the finish having notes of coffee, a big dark fruit sweetness and a lightly noticeable bourbon alcohol presence at the end. The flavor remained on the taste buds for a nice long while with a sweet fruity espresso taste left to linger.

Mouthfeel was a few shades past medium in body and oily in texture with a nice soft carbonation.

Overall a very well put together brew, although I found it to be just a tad to much on the sweet side...

Bottle dated 2/18/2013. Batch No. 2. Bottle neck label says "L’chaim sucka" so you know you are in for some fun. Pours deep dark brown with a dark kahki brown head. Smell is crazy. A combination of sour beer and chocolate, with something that reminds me if wine. Smells sweet with some citrus. Bit if the rye whiskey and oak on the nose, too. flavor is sweet up front with chocolate and lots of molasses. Fades into sweet black cherries and sour vinegar. Rye whiskey is present but it is not too boozy. Sweet lingering aftertaste on the palate. Like a slightly sour cherry cordial. Pretty heavy beer, with low-to-medium carbonation. Had no clue what to expect with this, but it actually turned out rather nicely. No single word to describe this. It is certainly funky. Share the bomber, just too much sweet for one. (817 characters)

Aroma, pruny brown sugar, some earthy hops and woodiness. Light booze.

Taste, it is sweet. Brown sugar and molasses. There is some earthy wood, plum, sherry. Some nice chocolate later.
Didn't get much barrel, but I thought it was tasty.

Sticky, borderline cloyingly sweet medium body.
Definetely not as good as the others. Worth trying though and not terribly expensive. (443 characters)

A: Pours a dark black, nearly opaque with a large tan head the rises to over two fingers. The tightly packed head gently recedes to a ring that sticks throughout.
S: Dark fruits of tart cherries and plums. Very sweet in the nose with sweet milk chocolate.
T: Dark fruits again with that slightly tart cherries covered in chocolate. Which I enjoy, but then the over barring sweetness just takes over. Seems over attenuated.
M/D: A full and sticky body. Low on the carbonation. A slow sipper for sure. The alcohol packs a punch, and the sweetness is a bit much.

Like I said, just overly sweet. Other than that, very enjoyable. I am thinking some age will mellow this out. (670 characters)
