A - Poured out a jet black color with a small, tan head of bubbly foam. It left thin rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of some black cherry and toffee, caramel and sweet malt.

T - Malty and sweet with toffee and caramel flavors. Some sour cherry is present and very mild.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - This is pretty good. I think letting it sit for a few months helped.

22oz bottle.

Pours dark brown with a beige head of an inch that quickly fades to a placid surface and zero lacing.

Ripe malt, raisins, bourbon, port, and plums start the nose. Booze-laced figs and dark fruit follow through.

Medium to full bodied with a slick, sticky mouthfeel. A bit syrupy.

Sweet malt, ripe fruit, and plump raisins lead off the palate along with boozy, vineous notes. A faint tartness with cherries and dark rum run under.

Finishes with warming bourbon, port, cherries, and leathery malt.

Big, boozy beer and certainly cellar worthy.

Was trying to find this for many weeks and was able to buy a couple. Had one about three months ago and now reviewing this aged slightly less than a year.

Pours an almost black ale with a nice staying beige head. Didn’t want to go away. Decent lacing.

Getting a lot of barrel in the nose. Dark fruits, rubber, brown sugar, light chocolate, green apple and whiskey. The barrel is still very present though not overpowering.

The taste has gotten better with age. Three months ago this was much too sweet but this is blending nicely as it sits. The sweetness is still present, but it’s morphing into a more well-rounded beast. Underlining hope bite and a slight pepper kick on the swallow. The rye shows through on the aftertaste and leaves a lingering impression.

Overall I like the attempt but I can see where the overwhelming sweetness could put some people off. It’s definitely different. I love the attempt and while it’s not on par with some of there other brews, this was a fun and unique flavor experience.

A dark cola like pour, good head formation, not the greatest in terms of retention or lacing though. The aroma was interesting, reminiscient of Firestone XV, but with some cinnamon and more dark fruit going for it.

Taste, similar again to Firestone XV, had a nice sweetness going for it, a body and consistency that was more barleywine or old ale than it was imperial stout, despite the color. I thought more pomegranite and cinammon (I keep mentioning cinnamon, its not like it was oppressive, or even large, just the right amount). The barrel addition to the flavor profile is mild, but enjoyable. Definitely not getting any charre barrel remnants on this one, leans more towards the sweeter non charred whiskey barrels I would think. Alcohol relatively well disguised. More often than not, dark fruit notes don't sit well with me in a beer like this, they make it all 'quad' like, but thankfully, there's no yeast like quad notes, nor does the beer come off as dark fruit bitter, it just truly lends a small pomegranite like sweetness to the beer. Brown, black, even a little chocolate malt in short order. Some mild citrus notes, similar to the inclusion of double jack or wookie jack in a FFW blend, probably from the Rye IPA they use, here, blended in just the right amount.

I was pretty impressed with this. Sampled with greenkrusty101, who bought this for me about 6 months ago, finally put it down after a growler of Ephraim while watching Season 1 of Trailer Park Boys at the new house.

A- This beer pours a jet black body with a tan creamy head that last for a good bit.

S- The earthy wet wood aroma has a soft Flanders red cherry ester note to it with some tartness in the finish.

T- The nice tartness is followed by a red wine character with some caramel and smoke with some walnut hints to it. The sweetness of the finish has bourbon and chocolate malt coming through and lingering for a bit.

M- The medium-full mouthfeel has an alcohol heat and a soft carbonation in the finish.

O- This beer has some good layers and it is interesting how the sour and oak mix well with red wine and Flanders yeast characteristics with softer bourbon notes. It gets a bit too thick and syrupy for me as it warms but it was interesting to drink along the way.

22 from Brewforia for a damn pricey $14 ... Shmaltz is getting pretty damn proud of their brews ;-)

Poured into my thin tulip... dark tan head rises and drops pretty quickly but leaves behind very pretty lacing... the brew is dark.. looks like a porter.

Woody sour notes immediately make me think of Collage.. but sweeter, darker, and not quite as sour... plenty of wood and whiskey.. fruity like currants and/or sweet cherries.. a bit vinous and mildly acetic.

Flavor has Balsamic qualities that gel on the palate.. not really a bad thing.. just present. Vanilla and woody character is more than prevalent.. more sweet than sour, but I like it.. waves of malty complexities that are hard to harness... dark/chocolate.. hints of black malt..

Body is heavy... carbonation tries to make up for the deficiencies.... but ultimately fails.

I am sooo surprised I enjoyed this one as much as I did.. It should be a bit drier... that would help the barrel character shine and take away the sorta cloying sweetness.. but overall, this is a winner.

Still too expensive ;-)

I've had a number of these beers, as it has been on tap at the Amsterdam Ale House on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for some time now. I'm surprised to see it listed as an american strong because this beer is very funky and quite sour. ...and overall great.

Appearance is a dark brown with a lighter brown/tan head. Carbonation is adequate, not huge but not flat either.

Aroma is of the dark fruit, roasted malt and some of the sourness comes through on the nose.

Flavor has all of the same characteristics but also a very sour presence. Pretty well balanced if you're ok with sour as one of the elements.

A great beer from a great brewer.

Their Jewbelation beer aged with Rye whisky and bourbon barrels, what could go wrong?!

Pours darker mocha colored almost 1 finger head, lots of big bubbles scattered in the creamy fluffy head that pop quickly making it fade in a strange shape, but leaves decent lacing on the sides as it does fade. The beer itself hides the light, it gives the slightest aura of light trying to get through with a super dark murky brown-black color on the thin parts, but other wise the light hides inside the almost pitch black beer.

Nose wafts rye whisky, wow rye! Barrel aromas really come through as well, woody esters like the softened part of water soaked wood, barrel char, actually quite a bit of burnt acidic almost acrid barrel aromas, like they scraped the barrel and dropped the burnt shavings into the beer. Plenty of rye as well, spicy rye whisky that does give the aroma like it was soaked into barrel first, not straight from the bottle. Then beer, plenty of caramel and molasses, bit of dark fruit, vanilla, hint of cocoa, etc. Then throughout all that is a bit of a tangy aroma, like it may have a sour funk to it, but that could be the barrel and rye additions getting to my brain.

Taste comes on so complex my tongue doesn't know where to begin. No funky wild tangy flavors, so that's a good start. Lets start with the sweetness and malts. Quite sweet at first, syrupy thick almost molasses like, and speaking of which, some molasses flavors, blended well with caramel, toffee, all that dipped in a bit of cocoa. That seems to bring a bit of a fruitiness with it as well, hints of fig, black cherry, a tart cherry, and possibly some other dark ripe berry flavor. Next let's move to the barrel flavors, again mostly rye. A spicy rye component makes itself known, again soaked through saw dust like barrel, soft mushy water logged wood flavor, which also brings out a bit of vanilla, and hint of bourbon. The char comes in again as well, slightly tangy acrid burnt barrel scratch, a bit too much char on the barrel at least. other malts bring some cocoa, a bit of roast, and actually a bit of roasted coffee, a slight mocha java like flavor. last and actually fairly least is the hops, there are a bit of spicy earthy hops there, but fairly light in the background, and I had to find them so much that I'm not sure if my mind on beer is thinking this out too much, with a decent but lighter bitterness. Finish is sticky and syrupy, mouth coating, just a bit of warming booze, lingering roast, cocoa, molasses, and plenty of rye, barrel, and caramel even.

Mouth is rich and full bodied, complex and thick, syrupy, with lower but decent carb for what it is, just a bit of warming booze towards the end.

Overall pretty good, not quite as good as most of the other Jewbelation series beers, but decent nonetheless. Running out of room for characters, so quick summary, nice complex malts, hint of decent hops, nice rye, bit too tangy and acidic with too much burnt charred barrel and acrid char, and bit too soft woody taste, but overall super complex, rich, and decently drinkable all things considered. Would drink again.

This poured a dark cranberry red to almost brown that gave it a purplish hue in the bar. The head was a tightly knit cap of dense brownish foam.

The aroma is tart, a tad sour and full of balsamic funk. A good amount of sour cherry can be had along with some barrel wood.

The flavor is well matched between barrel and sour. The taste is tangy and tart with cherry, vinegar and sour. The barrel manifests itself in a bit of oak and a touch of vanilla for sweetness. This taste profile compliments the sour cherry very well.

The feel is a bit puckering but not over done and adds to the personality of this ale.

This is listed as a strong ale but this certainly could mask for a well done European Flanders, Oud Bruen or any other sour style ale.

A very nearly opaque deep ruby red color with a thick and bubbly light tan head on top that sticks around for a good long time. It leaves plenty of lacing with it as it goes. The aroma is pretty much everything plus the kitchen sink with aromas of deep dark fruits underlying tobacco, leather, booze, herbal/earthy hops, and even a bit of mint, caramel and chocolate. The boozey notes intermingle with the herbal notes making for an intoxicating bouquet of aroma that makes me want to keep my nose in it. Even though it has that crazy mess of aromas going for it, it remains balanced and incredibly aromatic.

Pretty sweet on the palate with juicy dark cherries, grapes and figs coming through on the fruit side of things. It is followed with a touch of that mint, throwing the whole palate for a loop as the chocolate and caramel struggle through only to be overpowered by the near-cloying sweetness of the fruit and the herbal note of the mint. Farther into the bottle, more of the hearty spices come out to combat the sweetness, as well as just the slightest touch of that rye whiskey barrel aging. However, it remains very herbal and a bit cloyingly sweet. Surprisingly little in the way of alcohol taste. Slick mouthfeel that doesn't help the cloying factor, almost a little too smooth and a bit undercarbonated.

Extremely interesting beer. I was really hoping more of that balance in the nose would translate to the taste, maybe with some more of that tobacco, leathery heartiness. The sweetness kind of ran away with this without a whole lot of things to say from the hops. Now to be fair to this beer, it was bottled less than a month after I'm drinking it. This one may have mellowed out with the cloying factors after some time. Then again maybe not. Either way, if you're feeling adventurous, give it a whirl. I've liked everything from Shmaltz to this point and don't see any reason this beer would change that perspective.

APPEARANCE: A brown pour yields a 1+ finger, medium looking, fizzy, tan head with decent retention. Bistre brown in color with lower levels of carbonation evident. Head fades to a good frothy cap. A ring and splotchy wisp remain but leave no lacing down the glass. Fizzy head hurt a bit here.

SMELL: Medium nose of bourbon, whisky, oak, light vanilla and milk chocolate notes. Some caramel, dark fruits and light brett cherries on the nose as well. Quite complex with lots of elements for sure, but it could be a little bigger for the style.

TASTE: This is much bolder and more flavorful than the nose had advertised, and is also much funkier than expected as well. Funky notes of sour brett cherries up front, with some dark fruits and whisky flavors into the swallow. Bold and lingering finish of whisky, oak, light milk chocolate, some caramel sweetness, bitter dark chocolate and sour, brett cherries. Quite complex and much bolder than the nsoe. Good stuff.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Just enough weight and very creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly sticky on the palate. Solid.

OVERALL: These guys always impress, and this beer is just another chapter in the story. The barrels, beers and brett really work well together. A creamy palate helped as well. A bolder nose would help bring this one way into the promise land, but regardless, this is a very complex and interesting beer that I was very happy with. Give it a chance if you can. Recommended.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness Chalice. Batch/Cases No. 001/999. Bottling date 3/6/2012.

Appearance: Pours a deep dark black with no other color. Moderate amount of bubbles and a decent two fingers of tan head that slowly fades into a thin layer. Lacing is moderate on the glass.

Smell: A pretty interesting smell. The first thing that stands out is a somewhat sour dark cherry presence like a wild ale. Big hints of rye and a little bourbon with vanilla and oak. Dark roasted caramel malts with hints of chocolate and coffee. Also some hints of sugar, dark prunes and figs along with the cherries. Crazy but smells good.

Taste: Tastes just as complex and crazy as it smells. Big dark fruit taste with sour cherries, fig, and prunes. A good amount of rye and some bourbon with hints of vanilla and oak. Dark malts with hints of caramel, chocolate, and a little coffee. Also some brown sugar and molasses. With six different beers things are starting to get a bit jumbled. But this does taste good and is pretty drinkable.

Mouthfeel: Very full bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Syrupy and chewy but smooth enough so it goes down fairly easy.

Overall: With this many flavors competing you would expect a mess, and to an extent this kind of is. But this is balanced and smooth enough to be an enjoyable beer. The dark fruit flavors are pretty good. This is like a combination of a dark Belgian ale and American Wild ale, and barrel aged.

Picked up this bottle a good three weeks ago or more, I've been meaning to try it. Also, meant to pick up another bottle to play with, but as it stands, I'm drinking this as the basis of purchasing another.

Funky Jewbelation. A crazy whiskey barrel-aged blend of a hodgepodge of beers in the He'Brew lineup. Their 'messes' of beers haven't turned out to be messes. So, despite reading a few prior reviews, I have much hope.

Pours a deep brown-black that is very dark. Little bit of head of a tan color. Looks very typical for an American Strong Ale. 4.0

What's with this smell!? Almost as if this bottle is already infected, but that can't be. At least not for such a new release. I feel like it's highly improbably. Smells a lot like Spike & Jerome's Rye Barleywine from Switzerland, but a tad sweeter. Heavy rye influence from the barrel aging with a tart/flat note. The malts aren't huge in the nose, and there are no traceable hops. Just some dark fruit sweetness, some woody tartness, and the heavy dose of rye in grain-form and not so much in whiskey-form. At least, not in the aroma. 3.5

Okay, woah! I'm wrong. I can taste the confluence of a million flavors from all of these different aged and blended beers. Works as a strong ale. The whiskey is here now, and very comforting. I like the heavy dose of rye whiskey barrel aging versus bourbon. A little more interesting that way, and without the sweetness. The malts are supplying enough of that right now, anyways. I can taste Origin in here, that would be the pomegranate beer. The Jewbelations are in front. Never had Messiah to know, but Lenny's is hiding behind the whole picture somewhere. This is a burly beer with big flavors, but few typical roasted malt qualities that a dark beer like this would warrant. There's the big sweetness, and some woody bitterness that I'm attributing to the different barrels in the aging process. Fruity characters come off as candied fruits like prunes, dried dates, and raisins, but slightly sour, if that makes any sense. There's a nice dark vanilla outlining everything. The whiskey barrels are perfectly colliding with the other flavors, bouncing around a bit and getting slightly lost. They're not huge, as it would not work for this beer. I don't know, I was certainly skeptical after smelling it, but this is dee-lish after all. Reminds me a bit of Bell's Batch 9000 aged in rye whiskey barrels, if there was such a thing. 4.5

The feel is kind of funny. It's rich enough to pull in a medium-heavy body, but it's not syrupy or anything. The booze is right where it should be, if not somewhat deceiving. The carbonation isn't much, but that's a plus for the style and the ABV. The overall drinkability suffers a bit from the stickiness, however. It's not a super-sweet tasting beer, but sticks a bit cloyingly. It's succulent and juicy and not overbearing, so those are all good things. 3.5

I had some difficulty in pinning taste elements down for this beer. It's a very interesting brew. For what composes it, I'm surprised that it's not a nightmare. It's a great cool night pick-me-up. If you love rye whiskey barrel aging, then this is worth the try. Either way, pick it up. Taste it. Do a little review. I think somewhere deep down inside of you, once the bottle is gone, you wish you could have this again. 4.0

A- pours an almost black deep brown color with a little over a finger of tan head. Good retention.

S- sweet with brown sugar and some dark fruit aromas. Big malt caramel and toffee aromas come out as well. Oak and spirit aromas come out in the end with oak and vanilla tones on the finish.

T- starts out with big rich malt flavors of caramel, toffee and brown sugar. Dark fruit flavors of raisin and plum come out in the middle. The almost cloying sweetness gets by the oak with notes of vanilla and warming alcohol. Lingering spiciness and oak in the aftertaste.

MF- thick syrupy mouthfeel with a heavy body and soft carbonation.

D- sipper of a beer

Overall a very complex layered beer.

A - Beer pours with a heavy motor oil, dark brown colored body; some bubbles subtly sit on the bottom of the glass; quarter finger sized brown colored head; didn't hold for very long; not much lacing

S - Smell dark fruits like dates and figs; whiskey and booze; prunes; sweet brown sugar; syrup

T - Taste of dark fruits is sweet and overwhelming; not much hop bitterness; prunes; sweet brown sugar and syrup; rye; slight touch of toasted malt; oak and moldy wood barrel

M - Medium body; slightly tart at the end of the sip; lingering dark fruit, sweet brown sugar and roasted malt flavor; not effervescent

D - Great Strong Ale; I really liked the fruity-whiskey blend of flavors; its easy to drink and not too heavy; just has a nice strong booze; I really like that you can taste all the unique ingredients in the beer

got the single 12oz in the gift box this year.

i was not expecting a sour with this one, but it hit the spot. I have started to enoy the sour imperial stouts and love sour brown ales. this was that combined with far more complexity.

A-dark brown/black with some transparency, but not much. poured with a beautiful fine head that dissipated rather quickly leaving a ring around the glass.

S-funky. the smell was my first indication that this wasn't merely a typical blend of whisky barrel aged beers. you can smell the tart and funkiness. can't believe i didn't figure it out with the name alone. smell of acidity and mild sweetness. very subtle vanilla notes.

t-i had a sour imperial stout from a local brewpub this past year and it reminds me of that, except with far more complexity and body. sweet up front, with sour coming in on the back of the tongue. barrel comes in later with vanilla coming in ever so slightly. more sour cherry than sour apple. a good, nay GREAT malt backbone to this beer. i can see lovers of O'dell Meddler really enjoying this beer as well. great complexity present in both. very hard to define the flavors I'm tasting in this beer.

m-love it. body, but not oily. smooth, the alcohol is not perceivable. the acidity from the sour isn't overwhelming, and my teeth don't feel like chalk sticks halfway through. very smooth, and a pleasure to drink for something so sweet, malty, and tart.

o-i want more of this. want to split a bomber with a few friends. very much enjoying...now i'm going to go get a cut of extra sharp cheddar.

Served in a snifter, beer is brown with a thin off white head of small bubbles, some lacing, low retention, low carbonation, looks fine.

Aroma is balsamicy and sweet, like caramel and vinegar, smells good.

Beer is medium in body, a little heavy but nice, it is sweet and balsamic notes, grapes and a nice finish. It was far better than I expected. Nice. Probably not a repeat but I'm glad I had it.

Poured from tap into V shaped tulip at pizza plant in buffalo ny. Nice deep ruby brown pour with lacing that doesn't go away at all. Great woody slightly funky and cherry aroma..really nice. Taste is dried fruit and cherry...caramel and raison notes with a bit of woody barrel flavor. Its a bit over sweet but stil palatable. Overall a nice strong slightly funky brew...lots of flavors with this.

Poured into a Maudite snifter. Pours a very dark brown, appearing black in the glass. Thin light brown head that dissipates to a ring around the glass with slight lacing. Aroma of caramel and toasted malt, whiskey, oak, light chocolate and dark dried fruit. A lot going on here. Flavor is dark and dried fruit, cherry juice with a caramel malt in the background, finishing with light, slightly sour fruit, vanilla, whiskey and oak. Nice complexity and the lgiht sour element is just enough to add interest to the other components. Moderate body with light creaminess. An unusual and fun to drink strong ale that I wouldn't mind seeing again. From the great 2012 gift pack.

Batch # 001. Bottled 3/6/12.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small dots and streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of roasted malt, sour and tart fruit, and some slight funky aromas. Taste is pretty much the same with a fruity and funky finish. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that has an interesting blend of He’Brew beers.

22 ounce bottle - $10.49 at Lucky's in Woodstock, Georgia.

Bottling Date: 2/18/2013.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, near black body with a tall, surging, medium tan head. While it does quickly settle, it doesn't quite evaporate on you.

Smell: Sweetish, malty with varied, churning notes of roasted barley, caramel, baker's chocolate, toasted bread crusts, and nuts all cut by a jutting tartish fruitiness that, when co-mingled with the sweetish tones, has a quality like a good quality balsamic vinegar. I'm on-board with this one.

Taste: Roast, caramel, and some noted nuttiness with a fair degree of sweetness, but, there's a very quick jolt (just like in the nose, BANG, it's there) of tart fruitiness akin to a gulp of sangria. Interspersed with an agreeable bourbon barrel quality. A little earthiness underneath it all, with a low tone of black pepper. A little late-arriving vanilla and rye. Takes on the vinegary quality on the back half and into the semi-sweet, smooth, agreeably warming finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: A pleasing beer and another quality release from the good folks at Shmaltz.

22 ounce bottle into snifter; Batch 1, bottled on 3/6/2012. Pours nearly pitch black; hazy very dark brown color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, fig, date, caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, dark bread, chocolate, rye, bourbon, vanilla, oak, light pepper, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity, malty, and barrel notes. Taste of raisin, fig, date, prune, molasses, toast, toffee, caramel, dark bread, chocolate, rye, bourbon, oak, vanilla, light herbal spiciness, and roasted earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruits, molasses, toast, toffee, chocolate, rye, bourbon, oak, vanilla, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice flavor complexity and balance of fruity, malty, and barrel notes; barrel strength is just enough without being overpowering; with some slight cloying sweetness present after the finish, but not bad at all. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very slick, creamy, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent barrel blended strong ale! Great balance and complexity of fruit, malt, and barrel flavors; and extremely smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Reviewed from notes. Had on-tap at Mr. Dunderbak's. Served in a pint glass.

A: Very dark brown, maybe with some hints of red, and nearly opaque. A one-finger light brown head on top, and low visible carbonation.

S: Sweet, boozy, chocolate, a bit of wood, some fruitiness (dark cherry?), and some tart funk.

T: Funky, dark fruity, wood, booze (sherry?), chocolate. Quite tasty, although pretty sweet.

M: Heavy bodied, thick sticky mouthfeel, significant alcohol heat, carbonation sensation on the low side.

O: Tasty, different, but it's heavy, sticky and sweet. I felt pretty much done with it after about 6 oz. worth of the beer, but those first six were quite enjoyable.

A - Pours a dark cola with a very frothy tan head that dissipates to a ring around the glass. There's not much lacing to speak of.

S - Dark fruits (raisins, figs, plums) along with sweet malts and a background of barrel aged goodness.

T - Sweet dark fruits as described in the smell with a slight cherry tartness all around. The malts are sweet and the barrels impart a nice oaky & vanilla character.

M - Low side of medium body & medium carbonation. Really wish it was a little heavier body.

O - This is a unique brew & can be all over the place. I like the way all the flavors bounce around.

Pours a gorgeous mocha head, fluffy and thick, lasting a long while...it sits on top of a deep, deep, deep brown that might as well be called "black."

Very woody nose, and musty with whiskey/bourbon, while the dark fruits (fig, raisin, grape) shine through, as does a bit of toffee/burnt sugar.

Completely complex, unusual and truly wild flavor, which would be what you get when blending six already complex ales and then again in a couple different barrels (whiskey, bourbon). The whiskey/bourbon gives a bit of a boozy slant, but it's actually more subtle than expected and the juicier, dark fruit and heavily caramelized flavor come out as strongly as they should. Bit of a vibe of a sour, although I only really get Brett if I try. If it's used (I didn't do the research), it's taking a back seat to all these other crazy elements. Yay for beer blending, I'm all for it!

This feels AMAZING. Super thick but not gross; rounded, creamy, with a zip thanks to ample carbonation. Luscious, silky, superbly velvety. Pretty much perfect in this department.

No real surprise that this thing feels so insanely good. I've found that to be one of the reasons I continue to buy every Jewbelation this brewer releases. So, a completely sumptuous textural experience, and the rest is pretty damn great too!
