A: This pours a great brown ale color with a massive head, some lacing and heavy head retention.

S: Aroma is of a heavy dosing of cinnamon, some nutmeg and vanilla as well as a medium brown malt backbone.

T: This is a nice brown ale base with a heavy dash of a few spices. Perhaps a little too much, but I still can enjoy it. The Cinnamon might be a bit overbearing while the vanilla is welcome while a bit weak and the cocoa is clearly present and slightly reminiscent of Swiss Miss cocoa mix. The cinnamon, like most beers with a lot of cinnamon is slightly warming. There is also a bit of toffee in the back.

M: Mouthfeel is slightly light for a brown ale, and a bit dry, with a mild to high carbonation. While it poured rather rigorously, it does not taste overcarbonated or sting my tastebuds.

O: I think this was a success and as with a lot of Shmaltz's beers, is reasonably priced - Imagine that!! I still wish more breweries would get on the same page as Shmaltz. I am completely over paying 12-15$ for a bomber and have basically stopped doing so when it is not a beer that is phenomenal.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

Pours a dark brown color with a finger of khaki head. Lots of cocoa, vanilla, and milk chocolate in the nose. There’s a slight chili pepper aroma and heat along with a touch of raisins. Just a mild earthy note on the nose, too. Maybe a hint of roast and coffee. The flavor is full of sweet molasses, marshmallow, cocoa, and fudge. There’s a touch of raisin fruitiness, a light pepper/spice note, and a touch of vanilla. The mouthfeel is really nice and creamy, too.

The 2012 Reunion Ale release pours a dark mahogany brown color. It’s dark, but isn’t opaque. Backlighting reveals some burgundy and garnet highlights throughout. A soft, tan head tops it off and stands about two fingers tall. Retention was pretty. It held firm at the surface for a while. Lacing was on the lighter side. Looks good!

The nose is good. It would benefit from just a little more strength, but it is good. It kicks off with a really nice chocolaty, cocoa scent. It does smell a little sweet. Very light roasted notes are present. Coffee is in the mix and complements the malts really well. Vanilla comes through nice and strong and adds nice depth. I am getting a little cinnamon, but it’s subtle and very much a secondary feature. Alcohol is blended well and isn’t all that noticeable.

The flavor is impressive. The chocolate flavor is nothing short of delicious. It is a little sweet and has an excellent cocoa flavor. There’s a touch of coffee. It’s somewhat subtle, but has a big effect. I like it. Vanilla is a bit sweet, but works with the cocoa and chocolate flavors really well. This is tasty stuff. Cinnamon is a little more pronounced in flavor. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t add a whole lot. Just kind of there. Alcohol is noted, but isn’t overly strong. Finishes with a nice mix of chocolate and vanilla. Good stuff.

Reunion Ale has a body that’s on the lighter side of medium. Feels a little too thin. More body would be better. It’s not bad though. It’s tasty and definitely goes down easy.

I really like this collaboration between Schmaltz Brewing Company and Terrapin Beer Co. I’m a little surprised by how good it is. Its only real problem is that it’s a bit thin for a beer of its size. It’s good stuff. Grab a bottle if you see it.

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter.
8% ABV, '12

A - Clarity shines through the inky black beer while it's poured, but certainly not after. This dark beer creates a tall tan head rather quickly, and as the loud bubbles pop, the foam leaves residual lacing draped down the glass.

S - Robust, warm, and inviting, this unique aroma captures many different aspects and gently blends them together for seamless interaction. Roasted malt, along with the cocoa nibs give the brown ale an upfront chocolaty presence with milk chocolate-like smoothness. Caramel drizzled toast is sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar with just a hint of vanilla coming through the finish. Earthy, musty undertones give the beer it's uniqueness, separating it from other spiced brews and very light alcohol warmth enters as the beer warms up.

T - While the nose seemingly showcases chocolaty sweetness, the flavor takes an abrupt turn and compliments the aroma with the bitter side. Roasted malt and dark, bitter chocolate are completely welcome throughout the beer, though a rather stark comparison. Natural vanilla compliments the chocolate notes well as does the dash of cinnamon in the beer. Finishing with the earthiness found in the aroma, Shmaltz and Terrapin have come together for quite a unique beer!

M - Reunion Ale '12 is a medium-full bodied beer that features enough carbonation to keep the flavors and feel running together to develop a thick, throat coating texture. This dark ale is predominantly roasted with bitterness largely overtaking the sweetness that opens through the aroma but finishes dry and very nicely.

O - Beer brewed for a good cause always wins, no matter the outcome, but it's particularly the case with Shmaltz and Terrapin's Reunion Ale collaboration. This strong, dark brown ale piles a unique collection of ingredients onto an already big malt base for a bold-yet-delicate beer that changes with every sip. This is a perfect treat for those cold fall and winter days when a spiced and chocolaty beer with a little oomph is necessary.

A - Pours a dark cola brown, one finger tan head with little to no lacing.

S - A lot of vanilla through the nose along with some dry chocolate.

T - Bitter chocolate to start off. Cinnamon abounds and melds with sweet cocoa. The finish is chocolatey goodness.

M - Body is medium along with low carbonation.

O - Much better than last year's. I'm loving this collaboration. The flavors meld together wonderfully.

Drinkin this with my corn dog. Pours up nice dark browny colored with a radical khaki dome piece. Not too much lacing. No worries mate! I smell crazy fragrances of cocoa up front, vanilla bean, subtle coffee and toffee, caramel. Very dessert-like. Tastes spicy. Not like a pepper but like Christmas...er.... I mean Chanukah. Same flavors as the aroma. Just with that lil hazelnut pop. Muttled cinnamon. A lil low on the carbo. Pretty smoothe. No trace of booze. L'chaim!!

Bottle to tulip.

A - Poured medium brown, settled dark brown with one finger of fluffy light brown head.

S - Roasted malts followed bya heavy does of vanilla and cinnamon. Chocoalte is buried in the background behind the other elemetns of the beer. Very sweet overall.

T - Massive hit of sweet vanilla up front, followed immediately by a spciy cinnamon kick. Base beer is very much secondary but shows up mid-palate along with a lighter cocoa flavour. Fairly sweet overall. The finish has a lingering cinnamon kick.

M - Medium body, creamy. moderate carbonation.

Appearance- Pours a dark chocolate brown with a finger width of creamy mocha head.

Smell- Cocoa, semi-sweet chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, roasted malts.

Taste- Starts off with dark cocoa/chocolate taste followed by vanilla, a bourbon-esque flavour and roasted malts. This has an excellent balance between bitter and sweet notes.

Mouthfeel- Medium to full bodied with light carbonation. Pleasantly creamy and rich.

Overall- A rich American Brown Ale with well balanced flavours and a hearty body. A nice twist to the brown ale style that makes it like a dessert. Perfect sharing beer for the fall weather.

Poured into a perfect pint.

4.0 A: Mahogany brown color. Two and a half fingers of frothy tan head. Retention is good and plenty of irregular lacing is left.

4.0 S: Flavor explosion of everything listed on the label. Lots of cocoa, even more cinnamon, and just as much vanilla. Can't really smell anything else besides a moderate neutral maltiness and perhaps a touch of toastiness. In any case, it smells good.

3.5 T: Cinnamon is the most aggressive flavor in the taste. Cocoa and vanilla aren't far behind though. Moderate sweetness, caramel, light toastiness, and a mild bitterness. It's tasty, but it isn't "beery" enough for me.

3.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lacking creaminess, but otherwise smooth.

3.5 D: Good beer if you are in the mood for a combination of bold ancillary flavors. Otherwise, just decent. Drink when you are burnt out from the typical.

22oz bottle into a snifter.

A: Pours a murky mahogany with a large off-white head.

S: Heavy cinnamon in the nose, but it's pleasant and not overpowering. A tiny bit of maltiness detectable underneath.

T: Cinnamon, dry and slightly bitter roasted malt, mild caramel, slight vanilla. The nibs and vanilla become more palpable as the beer warms.

M: Light-bodied with active carbonation.

O: I liked the cinnamon quite a bit, but more body and balance would have benefited the beer.
