22oz bottle, 16% abv. Black in color, with some slight ruby edges. Head fades quickly, but there is a nice tan collar. Nice spots of lace cling to the sides after every sip.

Big booze in the nose. Some roasty notes, as well as ripe, dark fruit. Figs, raisins and dates come to mind. Hints of dark chocolate.

Some sweetness up front but not overwhelming. Nice roasty character with dark chocolate notes. Hints of fruit, but rather restrained.

Medium body, with lower carbonation. Not syrupy but not too far off. Alcohol is very big, but not overwhelming. I like this, maybe a bit of age will make this even better. Good stuff.

Really dark, thick, and totally crazed malt concoction. So malty and rich and alcoholic, it's ridiculous. Vast aromatics of malt roasting and burning with alcohol fumes rising to the brain.

My wife and I took sips-- "Licorice," I say. "Molasses," she says. Intensely sugary with deeply roasted and even charred flavors. Massive burnt sugar and a bitter aftertaste. There must be some hops in this to slightly balance the malty sweetness.

It's hard to rate this for "drinkability" or even "sippability," but if you think of this as a liqueur it makes more sense. The candy-like quality is part of the charm. Purchased the bottle over a year ago at Grapevine Liquor in Denver. If any beer can take a little aging, this is one.

Review from 2013 tasting notes:
Poured this into a chalice, just a little bit! Looks near black, lacks head, however rich, creamy tan lacing is seen as I tilt the glass on its side. Looks like I'd expect 16% of liquid to look.
Smells of dark fruit/ chocolate, nutty, raisin, phenols, hint of vinegar?
Tastes like the smell initially. Dark fruit (plum/ fig) hits me hard, followed by a long spicy burn and a satisfying creamy, sweet, medium carbonated mouthfeel. It's hard for me to describe huge strength beers like this. Better than i thought based on seeing reviews here? Yes. While impossible to pick apart 16 hops in this beast (much less tell apart even two), I think Schmaltz did achieve something here. It all adds up to where the hops work to offset the sweetness of the dark plum. Something to respect. Like when I first sipped DFH 120 minute.

Bottled November 2012

Very dark brown, nearly black, with a surprising amount of tannish head. Initial head evolves into a bubbly ring around the edge of the glass. Very little lacing.

Big sweet malty aromas, brown sugar, hints of chocolate, dark fruits, alcohol fumes.

Very sweet. Caramelized dark fruits, brown sugar again, woody notes, booze.

Sticky, chewy, warming body.

Well shit. 16% ABV means 16% ABV. This is a boozy beer and it won't let you forgot it til the next morning. Flavors are good, not great. I expected more especially with some age on it. Good sipper.

Its a lot too handle, very alcohol forward taste, almost like you're drinking a glass of brandi. Goes great with a dessert, flan or ice cream, because it also has a hint of sweetness and cutting it with something mellows out the alcohol potency. This is for the extreme drinker.

Now this is a massive ABV beer, one I enjoyed in several increments over the course of an evening, poured from the bottle into a goblet. Nearly pitch black with a brownish tinge and brown foam, looks like motor oil. Smells as sweet and boozy as you'd expect but without a lot of strong roasted barley or black malt character, more sweet and spicy with woody notes and an undercurrent of purple grape juice. Tastes like milk chocolate cake, dates and raisins, licorice, blackstrap molasses, oak, rum, vanilla, clove, unlit tobacco, another brown spice (maybe nutmeg?) ... There is yet another sweet flavor that almost veers into maple territory. Maybe some coffee, but by this point my tongue is pretty savaged. One is inclined to plumb this brew for new layers of flavor and while the aforementioned list does suggest a wide range of malty and sweet flavors, the 16 hops are almost impossible to discern at the individual level and instead there is a medicinal earthy flavor that blends together with the massive spicy alcohol burn. Drinking this beer in a mindful fashion is like walking into a grotto, looking for new caverns ... Except that just when you think you stumble onto some new passage, you come face to face with a huge grizzly bear named Fusel and have to beat a hasty retreat. This comparison notwithstanding, its a fairly fun experience. Very sweet and warming, makes the mouth and lips numb and leaves a medicinal burn as its calling card. Of course this brew is thick, chewy, and dextrinous, although maybe less so than one would expect (?) ... Its obviously pretty attenuated to contain this much alcohol. Aging might mellow this out. An interesting experiment and not soon forgettable. Curb your enthusiasm around the insane malt and hop bills though. You won't be able to pick them all out.
