Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Jason on 04-29-2013

Take aim at Shmaltz’s newest year-round offering, an American Craft Lager thoughtfully created to stand up to the big beer Goliaths of the world. Boasting a bright, citrusy hop aroma, supported by touches of wheat and rye, Slingshot is guaranteed to strike the craft beer bullseye every time.

Slingshot pours a bright straw color with a thin white head and light lacing. The aroma features juicy, tropical fruit notes of peach, lemon and red grapefruit with the light spice accent of noble hops. The polished malt bill is mainly 2-row pale malt with portions of Vienna and a touch of wheat and rye to add a delicate balance to the spice and fruit. It is medium in body with a smooth refreshing mouthfeel to make Slingshot a well-balanced, easy drinking American craft lager.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Nice frothing, faint haziness in the yellow golden hue. Light and fresh citrus hop aroma and flavor, faint rustic bread tones from the rye and wheat. Slightly light but very refreshing with and good dose of crispness. A bit more body for a lighter colored lager but it is expected with the rye. Easy drinking, a great option for knocking back a few.

excellent lager with plenty of hop flavor with a refined quality that is pleasant to the olfactory as well as the taste buds
I enjoyed this chilled from the bottle in a willybecker.

The color is golden with light haze and thick white head with fine bead and slow rising bubbles are visible with lace that clings with very good retention. The smell is very good with light citrus from the hops with mild herbal arom aand moderately malty smell. The feel is excellent with a light body and mild bitterness and resinous texture with moderate carbonation level and low sweetness with finish that is semi-dry.

The flavor has mild herbal hops up front with a light lemongrass with green tea-like quality and mild malt breadiness with light yeast flavor that supports and emphasizes the malt with light fruity accent but generally clean with hint of spice in the hop flavor late in the taste with subtle mineral element mid palate and perhaps celery or grass accent with slight pear skin sweetness and floral hop quality continues into the long semi-dry yet lightly bitter finish. Overall based on my enjoyment level and subtlety this is an outstanding beer -hoppy enough to not be bland yet still retains lager characteristics enough that is not an IPL or session IPA in disguise. This has noble hop flavors that are refined and expressive without becoming sharp or harsh

12 ouncer

Cloudy. dull golden in color. Eggshell head, moderate in size and going to a thicker collar anddecent looking scattered bits of lace.

Oranges/citrus on the nose

More lite citrus/oranges on the palate with some piney hop presence.
Dry with a moderate lager snap in the finish.

Pretty tasty, quite refreshing. I'm thinking this would be a pretty good warm weather swigger. Lager with a respectable citric hop bite. Hmmm...not bad stuff..

2013 12 oz bottle poured into a Belgian snifter.

Appearance: Body is hazy apricot color with a small head that soon reduces to a ring. Lacing is on the light side.

Smell: Hops are prominent and contribute both grassy and citrus qualities.
Taste: Quite hoppy and fruity for a lager; more than a little similar to an APA. Does have the crisp and clean qualities of a fine lager.

Feel: Light bodied with crisp moderate carbonation. Clean, dry finish.

Overall: an exceptionally hoppy with no loss of drinkability and a clean lager finish. Should appeal to anyone who likes an APA. Refreshing and recommended.

12oz bottle, part of the current He'Brew mixed pack.

This beer pours a clear, medium golden yellow colour, with three fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat bubbly off-white head, which leaves some sparse windy-day cloudy lace around the glass as it slowly abates.

It smells of semi-sweet, rather pastry-like pale and caramel malts, biscuity honey, a bit of neutered lemon and orange citrus, and subdued grassy, leafy hops. The taste is more assertive in its grapefruit and lemon fruitiness, the malt still quite sweet and bakery-fresh in its doughy caramel goodness, with a touch of stoney minerality, and sort of edgy grassy, herbal, and leafy hops.

The carbonation is fairly low-key, just a wan frothiness lolling about, the body an adequately solid medium weight, and mostly smooth, a few meddling hop esters shot on sight, with a certain sense of creaminess. It finishes well off-dry, that sweet, and not as complicated as the label's ingredient list might indicate maltiness showing its persistence, amongst a mildly yeasty and muddled bitter hop counterpoint.

As I now see echoed elsewhere here, this does seem much more like a scaled-down (on the hop side) IPA, than a crisp, hoppy lager - there are examples of such out there for comparison's sake. Anyway, agreeable enough, for the one serving, as the lack of proper balancing hops would probably get the best of me, and send me clamouring into the embrace of my next, maybe not quite so vetted conquest.

The Slingshot is a nice drinkable lager. The beer poured a cloudy yellow with white head that is leaving some lacing. The scent is pretty non-descript. The taste starts more hop bitter then somewhat settles towards the end. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall is decent.

Mild flavors all around, hint of wheat, rye, and spicy citrus hops. I wouldn't mind if something stood out to provide a little more character. Easy drinking and enjoyable though.

Pours two fingers of head on a clear light straw body.
The aroma is bright lemon and grapefruit.
The taste is balanced, some rye spice, a little bitterness in the end.
The texture is smooth.
An easy drinker with great aroma.

Pours an effervescent honey color with 2 fingers of pearl colored head. Nice lacing 7 head retention

S: Wet grass & cereal, almost has some funky aspects

T: Follows the now, wet hay notes & spelt & peppery notes up front. More wet hay as this warms, some lemony & grainy notes; a little soapyness. Finishes with peppery rye, grassiness & wet hay, but crisp

MF: Medium bodied firm carbonation, nice balance for the style.

Drinks easy, but kind of an odd beer that is not entirely true to style. Well worth a try

Poured by Piedmont Ale House in Burlington, NC into a standard pint glass.

A: Clear with yellow and gold tints, mostly transparent, some bubbling from carbonation. Very mediocre coloring that could easily be a light domestic, however bonus points for its thick 1-1.5" head and lacing around the glass.

S: Faint with slight hints of lemon, pepper, hops and yeast. Nothing spectacular - smells like a low IBU IPA instead of a rich and fulfilling lager.

T: Quite flavorful for what it is. I expected a fairly light beer that didn't have a lot of grunt but it was surprisingly flavorful. Crispy and sharp hops flavor covers a pale malty base with significant bittering, probably a 40-50 IBU beer (guessing). There are hints of pepper, citrus and pear. Somewhat light and easy to drink.

M: Standard, medium carbonation, not very silky or smooth - light and airy mouthfeel,

O: Not a bad brew. Wouldn't buy it again unless I really didn't have a better option, but it wasn't unenjoyable.
