Pours into a small tulip glass a clear rich amber with a nice looking blooming off white head that leaves two broken rings of lace behind as it sttles into a frothy mass.Phenols and citric hops dominate the nose,it's very yeasty but with a nice American hop element.Yeasty spiced phenols hit hard up front on the palate with a big shot of citric hops coming later,the yeasty phenols dominate but I still like it,the spicy rye lingers.It's a solid brew from a good combination of breweries in many ways.

Dark copper colored. Serious carbonation going on here. That's over an inch of tightly laced foam on top. It's a busy nose filled with coriander, rye, but the piney hops edge out the other aromas. The flavor is is initially coriander, piney hops rush in next, I get some spiciness from the rye, and then a piney hop fade. The mouthfeel is highly carbonated and a bit chalky and sticky. There's a lot going on here, but honestly the coriander seems out of place here.

A: Hazy copper amber under qa 1.5” cream colored foam collar composed of very fine, uniform bubbles that cling to the side of the glass.
S: Spicy rye nose, dried fruit, raisins, some mustiness, trace of banana.
T: Spicy grain, dark dried fruit, alcohol, faint banana, traces of prune, citrus, tropical fruit, balancing quinine like bitterness on the finish.
F: Super creamy, very fine texture, medium to medium full body and medium to medium low carbonation.
O: A big bold American rye double IPA brewed with a Belgian texture and yeast character.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice glass.

Appearance: Pours a copper amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of off white head with decent retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A yeasty and spicy Belgian IPA style aroma with a good presence of hops. Upfront hints of Belgian yeast with some funk and a mix of pepper, rye, and clove spicing. Fruity hints of banana, apple, pear, and grape. Citrus hop hints of orange peel, grapefruit, lemon zest, and pineapple. Earthy hop hints of grass and pine resin. Toasted malts with hints of sweet caramel, biscuit, grains, rye, and cracker. An odd but pretty good aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a unique mix of Belgian yeast, spices, and juicy hops along with caramel malt. Upfront Belgian yeast with some barnyard funk. Spice esters of clove, peppers, and rye. Fruit taste of banana, pear, grape, and apple. Citrus hop esters of grapefruit, orange peel, pineapple, and lemon zest. Earthy and herbal hops with notes of wet grass and pine resin. Toasted malt with notes of sweet caramel, grains, biscuit, toast, rye, and cracker. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very juicy, spicy, and fairly oily feel. Alcohol heat is pretty tame considering the ABV.

Overall: A very good spin on a Belgian IPA style brew. Good use of Belgian yeast and hops with a nice kick of rye spice.

This beer looks heady; it's a deep, thick and dark but very clear orange-red. It leans more brown with less light, showing considerably more of an amber hue when the light it put to it. The head starts out at a solid finger and remains there, foamy and creamy. It never recedes beyond a thick foam that never separates and drops a likewise foamy ring of lace at the top of the glass that's followed by strong patching.
I can't say that I've come across a He'Brew beer I don't think is wildly underrated on this site. The aroma and flavor are big and complex with layers of depth and richness. Malts are sweet, earthy and bready all in one, making a strong backbone in a beer that nonetheless somehow remains completely hopcentric. The hops are raw and leafy with pine and lots of citrus rind and flesh, the bitterness balancing playing expertly against those malts which just as expertly balance. There's almost a Belgian, candi-sugar like dusty and almost sugary-sweet mingling that adds a completely new dimension and comes out up front, riding it out to the end. That's all not to mention the rye, big, earthy, and spicy, so earthy it's almost woody. There's a boozy warmth that integrates without kicking too hard or being too heavy. It's not perfect, and to smooth out some edges and add slightly cleaner character would bring it there, but it's among the best rye beers of any kind I've had, not to mention fitting in with some exemplary DIPAs.
This beer flows smooth from the get-go. It's got soft carbonation leading to an equally soft crispness in a medium body. Something may fall off very slightly at the end. There's a certain level of dryness brought in, but it all comes together with so many different elements affecting the body and dryness working in accord to make this creamy, semi-dry, and a pleasure to drink.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter. Collaboration with Cathedral Square Brewery.

A: Pours a clear amber with a dense slightly yellowed head. Average amount of visible carbonation. Leaves a spot or two of visible carbonation.

S: You really get a Belgian aroma right off the bat. Loads of yeast that provide a banana like character. Hops are in there but take a backseat. Other light fruits are in there too, perhaps a grape like quality. Alcohol is present. As it warms the rye malt comes out to join the party.

T: Quite a complex beer, as with the aroma there is a strong Belgian quality. Hops are more pronounced in the flavor adding some nice bitterness. Rye comes through quite strong as well giving some spiciness which compliments the yeast. Can tell this is a strong brew. Yeast adds a good dose of banana.

M: Medium body with somewhat low carbonation. Stickiness from the hops but thats expected from such a bold DIPA. A beer thats best left to sipping.

Overall a very interesting beer, havent had a Belgian Style Double Rye India Pale Ale before but I do like it. Always been rye fan and have seen it work with IPA's. The spice from the rye adds to the Belgian quality nicely. Give it a shot, gets bonus points for breaking a style barrier.

22oz bottle. A nice play on words for the name, given the Lenny's RIPA base beer, and the Belgian aspirations of this offering. This must be one of the most involved, cross-pollinated beer 'styles' that I've ever encountered. Weird soccer-ball imagery frames the nascent St. Lenny on the label.

This beer pours a somewhat hazy, yet bright medium bronzed amber hue, with two fingers of puffy, tightly foamy, and eventually creamy ecru head, which leaves some decent pock-marked mesa formation lace around the glass as it slowly and surely bleeds off.

It smells of muddled creamy citrus, gritty rye and caramel malt, sharp, acrid Belgian yeast, and further leafy, earthy hops. The taste is rather pungent and edgy yeast right up front, aided and abetted by a hollow, indistinct dry citrus and orchard drupe fruit pithiness, biscuity caramel malt, wet, and lightly spicy rye bread, acerbic pine resin, white pepper, and somewhat extraneous, put-upon leafy, earthy hops.

The carbonation is rather soft, a touch fluffy, and generally just low-key frothy, the body an adequate medium weight, and hard to justify as smooth, with all the yeast and hop astringency wafting about. It finishes barely off-dry, the spicy rye malt, yeast, pine needles, and denatured citrus doing well enough to ward off any of the expected encroaching booze notes.

As if the rye malt wasn't enough of a subtle palate and mindfuck when originally dealing with this big-ass He'Brew DIPA, now I 'have' to see this otherwise heady brew taken through its paces by a sassy, somewhat unwelcome Belgian yeastiness. Like the drawn-out name foretold, there's just too much going on here, so much so that I'm starting to lose my enthusiasm for such things. Or maybe I'm still grouchy that this newfound 'contract-free' brewery's sales group saw fit to send us this, and not the Jewbelation 17. Booo-urns.

A - Amber to brown pour. Opaque look with a clingy tan foam head. Slight carbonation is noted.

S - Scents of malt, cherries, Belgian yeast, toffee, and candy sugar. By far one of the oddest and most interesting combinations I've come across.

T - This is a rye beer? The fresh rye taste is there but is dwarfed by a strong sweet malt flavor. Cherry cordial is there which ends in a slight boozy finish.

M - Slick feel and has a raspy bite. Light feel. The richness of flavors did not make me feel like I'd have more than one.

O - Interesting beer and one I'd go back to. A nice example of what's possible when a brewer goes beyond conventional boundaries.

Picked this up in Wichita

Pours copper colored with a sliver of cream colored head. Good head retention & average lacing

S: Pears, treacle, white grapes

T: Pears, leafy hops, treacle sweetness & orange peel up front. Some peppery rye shows as this warms, a bit of marmalade as well. Hints of grapefruit in the finish, along with leafy hops, a touch of booze & orange peel

MF: Firm carbonation, medium bodied, skews a little bitter to me

This was drinkable enough, but not something I'd buy again

This is "The Immaculate Collaboration" per the label, between Shmaltz Brewing and Cathedral Square, and identified on the label as a "Belgian Style Double Rye India Pale Ale."

Appearance is outstanding in that it pours a dark orange amber with a thick light khaki head. Crystal clear and very inviting. Head fades but still a nice looking beer.

Smell is full of what I call "carnuba wax." These are those big, bold and assertive fruity Belgian esters. This smells about as Belgian as it gets. Personally, I'd like a bit of assertive rye in the nose but I can't complain when the nose is this fruity and assertive.

Taste is big, bold and also most assertive. There is an almost sweet bitter front but when it hits your mid palate it pounds you with big rye flavor and tones. There is fruit, rye, toast, and a bit of green banana. It is the finish that makes this beer. Finish is giant bitter grapefruit and pine that is long lasting and complex. Overall, the taste is complex with layers of flavors and subtle undertones.

Mouthfeel is rich and lush. Bold and mouth filling with perfect carbonation and a richness that is inviting.

Good effort. The complexity and levels of flavor makes this an especially nice drink with a big and rich meal. If you like rye, this one is especially for you!

Wow, clear orange with translucent head. Aroma of rye, plenty of rye, probably offputting to those who are not rye fans. Tastes heavily of rye, I like rye, thus my score for taste, others may rate well below. Reminds me of Flying Dog's Raging Bitch with a boatload of rye. I see the "Belgian Rye IPA" label as fitting. No subtlety to the mouth feel, this is setup to feel like a double IPA. Appropriate for the type.

Poured into a He'brew small shaker pint. Pours a reddish bronze amber with a half finger fine off-white head with great retention and lots of lacing. Nice aroma of tropical fruit, rye, grassy, mildly piney hops, Belgian yeast and hints of citrus. Flavor is hop forward with good citrus and piney hops, rye with light rye sourness, stone and tropical fruit, finishing with surprising clove and earth spices, and piney hop bitterness. Medium bodied with mild creaminess. A glorious semi-sweet hop forward imperial rye beer, bordering on barleywine territory. Very enjoyable. Got this in the 2013 Chanukah Pack, but wish I could have purchased a few bottles to cellar, I think this would keep improving with age. I did not see this in individual bottles in my area, but will be searching it out now. I'm becoming more and more a fan of strong rye beers and this is one of the better ones.

appearance: Handsome copper. Clear. Loads of tiny bubbles and a thick off-white pillow of a head with messy swaths of lacing.
smell: Mostly sweet, slightly sour...very much like a tripel. Quite rich though not complex.
taste: Drier than the nose. a bitterness blooms but held in check by the tripel like sweetness, and a mostly dry finish. A bit of spice.
overall: A Belgian Rye IPA....hmmmm. It works.

Viscous pour leaves behind a clear red colored ale with a small tannish white colored head.

Smell is sweet and malty with a slight sour edge from the rye. Spicy scent of cinnamon and brown sugar. Just judging by scent this is a malt bomb.

Starts out malty and sweet yet bitter. Heavy malt and slightly astringent aftertaste, like eating too many raw walnuts. Brown sugar and a little cinnamon bark, but mostly this is just bittersweet. Could be more complex but like a decent rock song it hits all the notes even though there are better songs.

Mouthfeel is THICK!

Overall, pretty tasty. Not the best in the world but I can see myself buying this again.

Bought at Central Market in Fort Worth, Texas. Transported back to Oklahoma via Amtrak.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber bottle into a large wine glass.

Pours a clear amber-orange clear liquid with smallish head. Gloriously good aroma with some citrus and vodka notes (the latter makes sense since this is 10% ABV).

Flavor is very rich and full. Some wine and liqueur notes. Some grapefruit, dates, raisins, some different grain (maybe some spicy rye), a tiny bit of maple syrup, all followed by a heavy dose of hops.

The best thing I could compare this to would be a meeting between a Belgian Trappist ale and an West coast style Pale Ale.

I really liked this. I want more! Very sad this is a one time offering.

Poured from the bottle a deep, bright orange color with two fingers of creamy ivory head. Good lacing left behind with this one.

The aroma was malty with bright grapefruit and orange zest notes.

Tasted as expected from the aroma. A nice maltiness with bright grapefruit and orange along with Belgian yeast and rye in the finish. The 10% abv was fairly well-hidden.

Medium bodied and sticky with a moderate carbonation.

An interesting take on an IIPA meets Belgian meets rye. I'll have this one again.

Pours a five finger white head that fades slowly to thin layer. Hazy amber color. Medium carbonation and medium body. Pine hop nose and flavor is balanced with the pine hops and malty caramel. Higher ABV is hidden. Lingering bitter finish. $4.95 for a 22oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, MA.

Serving: On tap at The Hay Merchant, poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: Clear, copper brown. Thick, off-white head with nice fine lacing down the glass.

Smell: Malt, caramel a bit of spice and emerging Belgian yeast as it warms.

Taste: Full and malty with some sweet fruit (apples?) and honey. The rye, hops and Belgian yeast combine for an interesting mix of peppery spice. Nice dry, bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Full, smooth mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Neither the rye, hops or Belgian yeast dominate, complementing each other nicely,

Enjoyed on tap at Bier Station in Kansas City as part of a meet the brewer mini tap takeover. Poured into a small Belgian style tulip glass.

Appearance - Body is a ruddy dark caramel brown color with reddish soil highlights around the edges of the glass. Head is a dense and frothy two fingers with a slightly burgundy twinge to it. Retention is excellent and only a few slightly larger bubbles are smattered throughout. Lacing is pronounced but silky, leaving a rim of bubbles around the glass.

Smell - A heavy dose of the rye right off the bat, but then a healthy dose of phenolic tropical fruits and ester characteristics make themselves known as well as a sourdough like characteristic.

Taste - Again, the rye is well represented, now with a spiciness to pair with the nice bittering from the hops as well as a healthy malt backbone. The only flavor element that doesn't really play nice is the alcohol, as this is a pretty boozy DIPA. Let's just put it this way--the 10% is not concealed. Lots of good elements, but the alcohol is a little too aggressive.

Mouthfeel - A chewy medium-bodied brew, with moderate to high carbonation and a semi-dry finish, with a slight lingering bitterness in the aftertaste.

Overall, an interesting beer. I haven't had too many double IPAs with such a large rye presence, let alone rye DIPAs that are a full 10% ABV. This is definitely one you want to take your time with. I would probably have it again, especially with food.

Pours fairly crystal clear deep orange copper color with a 2-3 finger dense light khaki head with incredible retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange zest, pear, clove, pepper, banana, caramel, toast, spicy rye, pine, floral, grass, and floral/yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop, malt, and fruity/spicy yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, orange zest, lemon zest, orange rind, banana, clove, pepper, pine, spicy rye, caramel, toast, floral, grass, and floral/yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy pine resin bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, banana, clove, pepper, caramel, spicy rye, toast, floral, grass, pine, and floral/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of hop, malt, and fruity/spicy yeast flavors; with a great sweetness/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a lightly creamy, slick, and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent Belgian DIPA! All around great balance and complexity of hop, malt, and fruity/spicy yeast flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Swig from the bottle and it's like a cold steel barrel between your lips. This is a big mouthful of fighting flavors. Beautiful copper-tinged golden color with a nice head in the Morte Subite globe. Sudsy light mouthfeel with a hint of menace in the sweet hot alcohol. Fruity and vanilla aromas.

This needs a scorecard to check off all the flavors. It's a little boozy, very sweet, grainy, hot, bitter, and woody. Rather astringent after some sipping. Deep tongue-numbing barrel woodiness. Burnt sugar with a whiskey chaser. Or maybe a barley wine Depth Charge with a jigger of orange bitters. Actually this grows more likeable, I have to keep upping my score, but it's a challenging brew.

The grainy taste seems intensified by the heat. Moderately bitter as you sip, but the aftertaste bites back. I'd call it more of an IPA than a Belgian, though it is rather sweet followed by the dry tongue-wringing experience.

Aftertaste is bitter as Lenny Bruce. However, for the hop fiend, this has much to offer. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bottlecraft in San Diego.

A - Pours a beautiful amber red color, crystal clear, and a thick, frothy, one finer high white creamy head, he foam is very sticky and clings to the glass like glue.

S - A very interesting nose with sweet Belgian candy sugar light tropical fruit and spiciness from the rye. The spice is the very first thing that hits the nose and is quite pungent.

T - Spicy rye from start to finish and almost has a slight "smokiness" to it and a Belgian malt sweetness in the background to hold things together, another word that comes to mind is "boozy". Spicy, light tropical fruit bitterness from the hops and a Belgian bready, malty backbone.

M - Thick, full bodied, viscous, gentle velvet carbonation, and lip smacking sticky.

O - Very unique, no question about it and one that will make you scratch your head with confusion. Beers like this is what makes craft brewing so much fun...it doesn't fit into any category and blurs the lines.

S: Sweet. Molasses, brown sugar, a hint of rye/bubblegum/prune but the sweetness dominates
T: Sweet molasses/dried stone fruit initially followed by some rye towards the finish but again the sugar takes center-stage
M: Full-bodied, borderline cloying, sweet and the alcohol is noticeable
O: Hard to believe this is 10% but also has so much sugar that didn't ferment. Way too sweet for my palate. The Belgian style does come through but for also being billed a "Double Rye IPA" neither the hops nor rye were very prevalent. Nice concept but the final product doesn't deliver

Appearance - Pours a deep copper colour with two fingers of foamy beige head that falls over the glass.

Smell - Belgian yeast (clove, spices, banana), rye, tropical fruit, citrus hops.

Taste - Rye malts and citrus hops are well-balanced with the spicy flavours of the Belgian yeast and hint of tropical fruits. Belgian yeast is at just the right level and does not overpower the malt and hop flavours.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and pleasant stickiness.

Overall - A harmonious blend of flavours and ingredients. This Belgian yeast strain is complementary to the rye malts and hops in this brew, and by no means overpower.
