Torrance has a downtown? Well, that shows you how well I know about Torrance. I never really visited the city until I decided to check out the city's 1321 Downtown Bistro, which is located in downtown. Parking is on the street, and while it is in short supply, at least is free.

Bonus points towards the vibe. It's clean, kind of dark, busting during Happy Hour on a Friday, and has a 1920s feel to it. Maybe it's the decor, or perhaps it's the dress that the staff wears that brings in that feeling. Ok, it must be both.

The bar is in an "L" shape and had no empty seats. I sat at a small table across from the bar, and was quickly served. I'll just have a beer please. A good selection; 16 taps and over 50 bottles. The drafts included the local Strand Brewing, another from further out (Bootlegger's), and a variety of other American and imported brews. I spotted a few glassware varieites utilized, but in general the curvy pint glass was the go-to glass.

Then my brother calls me halfway through my beer. He's got baseball tickets. Well, gotta go, but at least now I know something about Torrance that I would recommend.

Great place. Awesome host/hostess, waiters, waitresses and the chef is a delight. Great beers, not much to choose from, but awesome none the less. Food was delicious. Price is not bad, just a tad pricey. Except the happy hour. Had an Atticus IPA and G'knight and it was only $6. Tab was $60 after tip. Had two beers, a pop, mac n cheese, salad, huge burger and something for the tot. I would go back to this place for every happy hour if I lived close enough. $3 for a premium beer? Wow! You need to try and frequent this joint. That is if you like good food and beer.

My timing sucks. I move about a month after 1321 opened. I lived right around the corner, literally 45 seconds door to door. Hell, if they had a rear entrance, I could get there in about 15 secs.

Anyway, the space is amazing, particularly when you realize you're in old Torrance. Lots of wood and leather, very nicely done. The bar area is very nice. Several flat screen tv throughout.

Service is friendly and attentive. I was there opening night and there were a few hiccups, but I think that can be expected. Went back again a week or two later and it was smooth sailing.

Tap list is not extensive - about 18, with one or two rotating. They've got selections from Oskar Blues, Stone, Flying Dog, Chimay, Duvel, local boy Strand Brewing and others I can't recall. Most were $6-8. Happy hour is 4-6 daily, incl weekends - 50% off!

Food is terrific. Their burger was really good, as was the salad we had, although the salad was pretty small. They have a number of mac and cheese options, incl a mac and cheese beer pairing night. We got a spicy version which was quite tasty. Food pricing was pretty standard for a gastro pub... think Simmzys or Brewco. I could probably have gone with $$$, but went with two based on the exceptional hh pricing.

Despite moving, I'm sure I'll be back often.

Highly recommended.
