Basically, this is a beer store with a small bar.

In my opinion, the concept is a good one. A nice selection, especially for that area of town. They have a larger section of domestic craft beer, and a smaller section for imports. They even had a seasonal table at the time. All beers are available by the individual bottle, some in six packs. And apparently, every beer is available cold and ready to drink on site. They also encourage you to mix-and-match your own four or six pack.

They have six or eight taps equiped with impressive selections. They fill growlers, or you can enjoy a glass at the bar.

The original attraction point that drew my friend and I to this establishment was their homebrew supplies. Their supply and ingredients selection was virtually nonexistant. They had a few extract ingredients kits, some irish moss, oak cubes, and malt extract. We were looking for sanitizer. They had none.

On the plus side, it was a very relaxed atmosphere. Maybe due to the fact that our visit was on a Monday night. But still, it was very welcoming, and the service was great. We browsed the bottle selection for a while, enjoyed a New Belgium La Folie (on tap), and built a six pack to take home.

They have a great selection of beer to purchase canned and bottled domestic and foreign. They also have a fine selection on tap constantly rotated for growler fills or just to buy by the glass. They also offer you cold bottled beer to enjoy at their location or to take home. The owners are nice people and this is a great place to locate some of your hard to find craft beers. A nice bar setting and also scattered tables inside and outside make this a fun place to just hang out. While they don't offer food, they encourage you to bring in your own and there are plenty of options nearby. They are great about that and one of the things we enjoy best. I highly recommend this as a place to shop, hang out and try a few or both. The owners are knowledgeable and will make you feel welcome. I try to make it there once a month or more often.

I visit Taps Brews every 7-10 days to create a 6 pack of beers that I have researched on BA. I enjoy being able to mix & match rather than having to commit to a sixer of something I may or may not like. Plus I only drink 2-3 beers a week so I'm a "lightweight" beer drinker. I usually always find what I'm looking for and then some. They have a fairly good selection of domestic craft beers on the left side of the store and a smaller import selection on the right, as well as 8 rotating draft taps. They usually offer something from one of the 5 (and counting) local breweries on tap and always on the shelf (Palmetto, Holy City, Westbrook). I would love to see COAST represented, since they are my favorite of the local breweries. My husband & I have been in on the weekends to try whatever they have on draft. The atmosphere isn't as good as the other bottle shop/bar in town. Taps seems kinda cliquish, maybe I just don't go in often enough for them to know me. Summerville is a craft beer desert so I am more than grateful for a bottle shop that is only 2-3 miles from my home.

As previous reviewers have noted, this place is a combination beer bar/ bottle shop. I went in the middle of the day and did two mixed six packs and a growler and then later the next day for the bar experience.

Both times, the service was excellent. They go out of their way to make sure you're happy/ getting what you want. The vibe is great and its cool to be a bar that is so expressly about the beer. Though I will note that it is much easier to separate me from my cash when you are able to sell me mixed six packs AFTER you have served me a couple ;)

Selection will improve over time I am sure, but it was more than adequate for a bottle shop in Summerville. It didn't touch the almighty Beer Exchange for selection, but was still impressive. The ability to break up any six pack goes a long way in my opinion.

They don't have food, but you can bring in your own.

All pricing was about as expected. Similar growler prices to Beer Exchange. Greene's in Columbia is still the best in state for growler prices.

Updated 10/6/2011: The selection has gotten better and the cost to fill growlers has come WAY down and is now pretty much on par with everywhere else.

Original review:

Its in a outlet type place next to Walmart on Dorchester Road not too far from the Ladson-Troller Corridor.

Fairly good selection. They're just starting out so I've been told its going to get better. Maybe half the selection of the Beer Exchange. Which is nothing to laugh at.

They take suggestions and are always getting new stuff in. Their Belgian selection is weak right now but its already better than when they opened. I would say their IPA selection is the best of any style. I've only been there a few times so I can quote too many specifics. All the big craft brews are present: Stone, Dogfish, New Belgium, Great Divide, Seirra Nevada, Avery, Ommengang, Brooklyn, Ballast Point, Smuttynose.

You can buy everything as a single. And they have everything cold in the freezer. You can even crack it open and drink it right there. They dont have food but they encourage you to bring your own and eat it there. There are about ten small tables for people to sit, drink, and eat. THere is also a back patio where you can sit and drink a few. All the bottles are lined on shelves on the left with the tables on the right.

This is really a cross between a bar and beer shop.

THe growler stand is toward the rear of the store/bar and has about 7 beers on it that you can order by the glass or by growler. There is a small bar to drink at too. I've gotten a few growlers but only when they are on special. Its almost rare to find growlers under $20 - they are generally massively overpriced. Even for the average stuff. They had New Belgium Ranger IPA for $20 and the prices went up from there for the other stuff. Whats funny is that you could buy a six pack of the same IPA for $9.50 off the shelf. The pint prices are about what you would pay in any bar. They usually range from $4 to $6 depending on the beer.

The prices of the bottles are about on target with other places in the area, some beers are higher and some are lower. TAPS is only a mile from my house so I pay for the convienience.

I'll keep going back because of the pretty good bottle selection but I am very hesitant to fill growlers. I always take one with me into the store but I only get it filled about 1/3 of the time due to the cost.
