Oh boy, what a difficult place to review... let's see....
It's stuck in the middle of an industrial area, branded as Porters.
Parking? Yeh, right...
Size - small.
Apperance from the outside? Uninviting due to concrete everywhere.
Open? Sometimes, but really, check the opening hours and forget Sundays.
However, underneath all that, there are some gems of beers to be found. Full HopDog/Bridge Road range for instance. Lots of Mikkellers and Brewdogs. Changes each time I have been.
Growler fills as well.
Service is varied- willing to talk if you want, but not if you don't make the first move to talk.
Free glasses were given out and I spent a miniscule amount.
Also note - the shop is a front for Beer Cartel, a mail order beers service.... clever biz model all in all, not just a shop. So this review isn't really for the whole business at all, as the shop is a tiny part of their presence.
Facebook updates are worthwhile.
Will visit again, a real niche player....
EDIT - March 2013. Service really needs to be noted as not the best over the last few visits. Prices higher now as well, at the extent of gouging on rare stuff. $12 for Little Creatures single batch???

Time to review this little place.
A-- Tucked away in an industrial complex part of Artarmon. If you know the area well you are fine. If not, good luck. Little to no parking as it shares spots with other businesses in the complex. At least covered parking!!! Small shop is being kind. Tiny is the operative word. Two fridges in the shop but well temperature controlled. Very sterile.
Q-- Have not had a bad beer from them. A few near or past expiration date though. Frequent in there and see what moves very easily.
S-- Not a very friendly place. A table shows you what is new. Staff is more interested in being on the computer. Never ask what you are looking for.
S-- Run of the mill Euro stuff. One or two Mikkeller things. Good NZ selection. Epic, Mike's, Yeastie Boys. Some hard to find Aussie beers in Sydney like Beard and Brau, Mudgee, Kooinda, and Feral. Standard Aussie fare like Squire, Mountain Goat, LC. Improving North America selection. Sierra, Moylans, Bear Republic, Green Flash, and Victory. The occasional Barid is there. Do have growler fills but usually local stuff.
V-- Good prices on single bottles and 4 packs. large format not so much. Average service but since I work in the North Shore it is convenient. Did I mention the trading hours just suck?? At least be open until 5 on Saturday?
It is badged as a Porters hence some of the range but is a front for their delivery service and online shop

Finally got a chance to make it across to Beer Cartel. Trading hours are more like a clothing store than liquor store: open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 6pm and 11am to 3pm on Saturday.
Tucked away in a unit in a commercial building in an industrial area. Difficult to find unless you have the address or GPS.
Looks closed from the outside, but is open and inside is small, a small wine area, even smaller spirits area and the bulk of the space allocated to beer. Nothing wrong with those proportions! Feels kind of strange inside with the staff kitchen right next to one of the beer shelves. Work was going on upstairs to build a tasting room. Small, but not cosy.
Two double-door fridges, one for wine and the other for domestic craft beer by the 6 pack, so the bigger sellers like Little Creatures etc. All the imports and the bulk of the beer is left unrefrigerated. Needs a lot more fridge space!
Tasting table in the middle of the room is good with malt samples, beer books for sale and gift packs. On the end is the growler filler (non counter-pressure).
Service was average. Nice to get a sample glass of the growlers beer, but otherwise the guy was keen to stay on the computer. Wasn't really sure about what new stuff us coming in other than Moylans and some other overseas stuff and some New Zealand beers...so not that helpful.
Selection had about 200, plenty of local craft like HopDog, Bridge Road, Stone & Wood etc. Imports were based around Mikkeller, Nogne O and New Zealand breweries like Croucher & Moa. Then the usual Trappists, German beer etc. Decent to good mix. Not mind-blowing. Growlers fills tend to be local breweries which is nice they are supporting the locals, but on the other hand we can just as easily go to the brewery itself.
Prices were competitive on small bottle sizes and pricey on the bombers, 500ml & 750ml bottles. Very good prices on HopDog 330ml sizes, likewise Mikkeller in the same format.
Ok shop, odd location, small, lacks refrigeration, but having a crack with growlers. Not the best store in Sydney, but worth going to if you can get there during their limited trading hours.
