Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Weizen has a very thick, beige head, a hazy, brown appearance (which becomes much cloudier, once the bottom bottle contents are swished and poured in), many tiny bubble streams, and a very thick lacing sheen left behind. The aroma is almost exclusively wood smoke, with maybe some sweet bread hidden underneath. Taste is of wood smoke, with some sweet breadiness, and just maybe some banana. Mouthfeel is mostly light and watery, and Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Weizen finishes tangy, drinkable, and odd. Overall, this is a must-try beer, if nothing more than for it’s unusual aspects. I think it is an excellent and well-done beer, even if the style is not to my particular liking. It’s certainly worth trying at least one time.

500 ml bottle into weizen glass, no bottle dating. Pours very hazy deep reddish brown color with a 2-3 finger dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of banana, clove, toast, brown bread, wood smoke, wheat, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with well balanced fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and wood smoke notes; with good strength. Taste of banana, clove, toast, brown bread, wheat, wood smoke, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of banana, clove, toast, brown bread, wheat, wood smoke, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and wood smoke flavors; with a great smoke/yeast/malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth and moderately crisp/creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with no warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice smoked weizen. All around well balanced fruity/spicy yeast ester, dark/bready malt, and wood smoke flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
