Pours a light brown, clove color. Thick 1-inch white foamy head that dissipates to ¼ inch after a few minutes. Not much lacing.
Smells of smoked bacon, but not overwhelming. Some malt.
A smoky taste, but not as overpowering as I remember from when I visited the brewery. A hint of creaminess one would expect from a weizen, even a hint of banana hidden behind the smoke. Finish is smoke, a little dry, and slight smoky aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is crisp, and full. Some carbonation hits the back of my throat.
I remember not really enjoying this beer when I had it in Bamberg 2-years ago. But frankly, I enjoyed it today. The "best before" date is Dec09, so, the bottle is approx 1-year old. Perhaps the smoke fads with time? Anyhow, I would drink another.

500 ml bottle into weizen glass, no bottle dating. Pours very hazy deep reddish brown color with a 2-3 finger dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of banana, clove, toast, brown bread, wood smoke, wheat, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with well balanced fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and wood smoke notes; with good strength. Taste of banana, clove, toast, brown bread, wheat, wood smoke, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of banana, clove, toast, brown bread, wheat, wood smoke, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and wood smoke flavors; with a great smoke/yeast/malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth and moderately crisp/creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with no warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice smoked weizen. All around well balanced fruity/spicy yeast ester, dark/bready malt, and wood smoke flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
