Very nice looking burnt sienna. Almost completely opaque with a frothy head that billows over the rim of the glass. After a bit it dies down somewhat but maintains a solid inch of foam for the duration.
The aroma starts off with the standard Schlenkerla beechwood smoke, though it's not nearly as pungent as their marzen, and has a pleasant hefe weizen yeast spiciness that lingers in the background. I didn't think this combo would work out as nicely as it does.
The taste again has smoke and wood right up front, and perhaps some slight roast, with the hefe weizen creaminess and spiciness in the background. It's hard to believe just how well the smoke and banana esters work together. A slight tingle on my tongue from the carbonation keeps it light and eminently drinkable.
Full-bodied for the style, but goes down quite easily compared to other weizens. A little smoke lingers in the back of my throat after swallowing, giving this one an abnormally and wonderfully long finish.
Definitely up there as one of my favorites hefes, though it's really more of a dunkel weiss and as such more of a cold weather beer.
Edit: after having a few more bottles over a couple of weeks, I've put this beer into perspective. A solid wheat beer, with a nice smoky element, but nothing oustanding.

500 ml bottle into weizen glass, no bottle dating. Pours very hazy deep reddish brown color with a 2-3 finger dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of banana, clove, toast, brown bread, wood smoke, wheat, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with well balanced fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and wood smoke notes; with good strength. Taste of banana, clove, toast, brown bread, wheat, wood smoke, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of banana, clove, toast, brown bread, wheat, wood smoke, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and wood smoke flavors; with a great smoke/yeast/malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth and moderately crisp/creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with no warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice smoked weizen. All around well balanced fruity/spicy yeast ester, dark/bready malt, and wood smoke flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
