Holy Smokes! Ah, I deserve to be shot for that.

Anyway. First and last impression of this beer is that of holding your face over a hardwood bonfire and inhaling deeply. Throw a kielbasa or sausage in there for good measure, carbonate it, ferment it, put it in a bottle, and voila! You have a Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Weizen. Clearly not how it's made, but a adequate description of the flavor. Looking for a good wheat beer with a hint of smoky flaver? Pass on this one. This is an intensely smoky experience with some weizen buried deep under the surface, revealing itself only after the initial smokehouse essence hits.

Appearance is a bit more amber than most other weizens, reflecting the flavor nicely. Medium sized head, though light in texture. Same goes for mouth feel, though you may grow tired of the beer quickly anyway thanks to its intensity. The light body is a stunning disconnect from the (over)powerful taste.

Drinkability on this one is going to vary considerably, though even for the most hardened rauchbier drinkers I wouldn't call this a session beer. A pint or two at most I would imagine sufficient to take care of anybody's hankering for some good smokiness, but a very enjoyable pint or two it would be.

A: dark, reddish amber liquid, relatively clear till the lees are dumped in... throws up a big foam stand, which falls, leaving a constant, creamy, thick-ish pad atop... very nice

S: light-to-moderate campfire smoke... mild-moderate dark wheat malt... perhaps some faint doughy yeast

T: sharp, clove-y phenolics... bubblegum far in the background... sweetish whole wheat bread... fairly familiar Bavarian yeast character providing color... washy aftertaste of caramelized wood, dark bread crust, gummy gluten

M: typical, fullish, beta-glucan-rich feel for a weizen, with a bit of an elastic flow... fairly dry in the finish, perhaps a slight residual yeasty film on the palate

O: actually not too shabby once you get into it... the smoke elements are pretty well balanced with all else... no telling how old this bottle might have been though

Nice smokey smell and aroma. Pours a nice mediium brown with a small head that dissipates quickly. Not as smokey a taste as I was expecting and definitely not overpowering. Good flavor and easily drinkable This is a very good beer that you can take your time with and savor.

A- Deep reddish brown. Semi hazy. Only poured about a 1/2 finger of head. Soapy lacing. 4

S- Mostly a pork style smokiness. A touch of caramel. Not very strong. 3.75

T- Different from the nose. Malt bomb for the most part. Caramel, clove, just a touch of banana, light bready malts, and a pretty good kick of spice. Seemed to have an earthy hop presence as well. 4

M- On the thin side. Carbonation was crispish... 3.75

O- This one was ok. The aroma and mouthfeel was much lighter than I was hoping for, but the taste was nice. 4

A campfire wheat beer? Sure, why not. I like fire.
I'm going to try to recall this, so work with me.
Hazy pour, typical of a weizen style with maybe a darker golden color to it. Don't recall the head, I think it was adequate, but honestly. I was going for the nose, and what smokiness and wheat were going to give me for a ride. Enjoyable, if you like to drink the essence of a healthy campfire burning with crisp wood. Some brightness and snappiness happening just underneath, and obviously with its smoked barley. this is a malt forward beer with hops having only a bit player role. Definitely be an interesting food pairing beer and also a sharing beer with those who enjoy such things.
A very old style and traditional one that warrants your investigation, and more brewers in the new world riffing on.

Smoked Weissbier you say? I'm game. As a weissbier connoisseur, I was curious to try this variation. Would it be like a dunkles weissbier or a thing of its own making. Pour dark, muddy coffee dark in a Weihenstephaner Weissbier glass. Average head that dissipates to nothing after a few minutes. Smell is wonderful aroma of warm smoked meat & leather. Taste follows the smell as smoked malt followed by the tart cloves and a touch of sweetness. Mouthfeel is unexpectedly light and carbonation is weak and this is where this beer comes up short. It's a nice change of pace from a weissbier or dunkles weissbier but I'd think twice before paying $5/bottle for another one.
