It's rare that I openly say that I love any particular style of beer. But smoked/rauch.... I love them. This smoked weizen was pleasant surprise.

The smell is dominated by the smokiness. I believe beechwood. It isn't stinking with smoke and doesn't overpower or waft over the entire room. It is light, but it is pretty much all smoke. Which for me is no problem. I really enjoy that smell a lot. Very woodsy.

Unlike other weizens the colour of this is deep for a wheat ale. Amber gold edges, but a nice reddish brown colour in depth. Very nice to look at.

On the weizen the smoke dominates the tastes as well. It just bears down on all of the common wheat beer flavors until the end where the twang of weizen pulls through nicely to remind you that you are not simply drinking a boatload of smoke. There is a tad grassiness that seems to wander and weave through the entire beer which is also very nice. A small amount of very delicate banana wants to pull through but it is stomped on by the smoke. the grass and banana hints liven things up a bit among the smoke though. But like I said, the smoke dominates this beer... clearly.

The bubbles are not over the top but it is definitely well carbonated, maybe slightly more than the average wheat beer.

Overall, another great beer from Schlenkerla. If you are looking for huge smoke in a lighter package, this is it. If you are looking for rauch in general, Schlenkerla is forever a great decision. If you do not like smoke in your beer, do not even think about touching this to your lips.

Nice foggy burnt orange/muddy brown in color. Hangs onto it's frothy head well.
Smells primarily of smoke...but more subtle than some.
Nice smokiness up front in the taste. Ends with a good 'n spicy weizen kick. Quite tasty.
NIcely effevescent in the mouth.
Something different, but a winner in my book.

Wow, did I really drink this? I can't believe that I have come from pounding Killian's Red and JW Dundee's Honey Lager in college to drinking a smoked wheat beer from Germany.
My first thought of smoked beers was "Ewww...!" But then I came to apreciate them. But when I asked for Spezial Rauchbier at Mug's Ale House, and all they had was this, I was even more wary. I mean, come on, a smoked hefe?
But I tell you, this beer was delicious. Nice dark amber color, perfect pillowy wheat beer head, hints of (surprise!) smoke and clove in the aroma. The taste was like one of the richest, most impressive hefewiezen's I've ever had, complete with banana, clove, slight citrus, a biscuity maltiness, and spicy hops, followed by a full, firm, but not overwhelming flavor of smoke. Where something like the Alaska Smoked Porter reminds you off a charred steak, this tastes like a grilled banana dessert of some sort. Sound gross? Yep. Taste gross? No way.
Nevertheless, awesome with a bacon cheeseburger, especially Mug's bacon cheeseburger.

Poured into a Chimay goblet, leaves a nice, thick head with decent head retention and lacing. Very cloudy brown color, with some bubbles coming up. Looks nice at the very least.

The smell is complex - loads of smokiness, nice malt presence, a bit of wheat and ester flavors. Hops are not very prominent.

It's got a very strong taste of smoked meats, loads and loads of smoke. It's almost all smoke, but there is a moderate taste of wheat and some clove or banana estery flavors towards the end. A very subtle taste of hops prevents it from being too overbearing.

The mouthfeel is really excellent, quite creamy and slightly carbonated. Extremely easy to drink, yet has a very distinct, strong flavor. An extremely well-made beer.

Poured into a standard pint glass, nice huge light tan head fills half the glass. Color is a dark copper with amber hues and hints.

Smell is milder smoke than the bock, with hefe yeast notes of banana clove and spice coming through, subtle hints of grains and wheat.

Taste is mild smooth smoke with a good breadiness, and similar hefe yeast notes of banana, clove, and spice.

Mouthfeel is so smooth, the wheat and fuller yeast flavors off set the drying qualities of the smoke.

Overall, I like this version better than the bock in terms of drinkability, very smooth smoke flavors and good hefe flavors to mingle.

Pours an orangey dark-brown, faintly cloudy, with a creamy beige head that lasts the glass.

Aroma is a nice blend of sweet, rich smoke, with notes of grain, banana, clove, and phenols. Suggestions of cocoa.

Enters with a melange of smoke, biscuity, toasty, bready malt, hints of carob, with aromatic notes of banana, clove and phenols in a lively middle, and a smooth, dark, rich finish with notes of smoke and brown bread. A hint of warming alcohol too.

Medium to full bodied, dextrinous, mildly creamy, with a lively carbonation.

Wonderfully balanced between smoke, malt, and weizen yeast aromatics. I bought this bottle at the Whole Foods in Chelsea in NYC, and it is in superb shape. Time to go back for more . . .

the one i think i've had the least thinking it would be to conflicting... actually quite a developed balance between smoked and wheat malt. fantastic balance of smokiness and mild sweetness. and i don't mean hef sweet. this is a savory peppery hef. and i think most mineral crisp. quite drinkable as the 'bacon beers' seen to be a food accompaniment and sort of a novelty for the status-quo of american brew pub beer drinkers. would say best for chicken... fantastic for grill zucchini and mozzarella...
nice floral hints, mild fruit notes and a dry floral and smoke finish. especially in the murk of the pour. doens't dominate the palate and would have something else after.

actually quite redundent to figure the best offering from this brewery as they are all different and strong. it should be had... the grade is irrelevant. i personally like this and the urbock most.

Thanks to GreenWBush for pointing me in the right direction for this one and for more to come.
Poured into a pint glass. Pours a clear amber color with tons of bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. The head on this one is white and fluffy thick. Looks great.
The small is so grand- I love this smokey aroma. Smells like my clothes would smell after spending a night in front of a campfire.
The smokiness in the taste is sublime. Slightly sweet malty flavor as well.
The mouthfeel is so nice- crisp, with a good level of carbonation that burns the tongue.
This beer is so tasty, I could drink it all night. I originally thought a smoke beer was a one-a-nighter, but I've changed my mind.
Now I know it for sure- I love smoke beers. I have two more from this brewery and am very much looking forward to trying them.

The color is a cloudy, brownish gold, with a off white creamy head building about two fingers high. It dissipates slow, leaving spotted lacing.
The smell is smoked bacon, and some fruit background, like orange.
The mild smokey flavors are up front, sweetened by orange notes in the background. Yeast flavors take the middle, while the finish is a mild combination of everything.
Nice medium to light bodied Hefeweizen with exceptional flavor!

i loved the urbock, so why not the weizen? this pours out hazy, dark...somewhat murky. big fat weizen style head that was extremely rocky. right on. the nose of course is very smoky, though not as intense as the urbock...think canadian bacon, grilled hamsteaks etc. in the mouth its slightly heavier than your typical weizen, though it is crisp and full of carbonation. in the taste department your looking at a very light malt, the wheat flavor is minimal but seems to cut down on the smoked flavors. balanced. light spices here and there and it all rounds out to be a very drinkable, outstanding smoke beer/weizen/anything. a milder rauch that still satisfies this smoke addict.

Brown in hue with a tawny-amber-gold highlight, fairly hazy but animation racing towards the head is noticeable. Speaking of head, it was massive like a typical Weizen, this is always a lovely sight, it was not as rocky as a Hefe and the head retention was not as good as most good Weizens. It quickly faded to a bubbly cap that was about a ¼” in height. This cap lasted the entire consumption, impressive. There was no subsequent lacing however, disappointing. The nose has good potency. I wanted it louder but I’m greedy. The smoky aromas launch the nose in a direction far from a typical Weizen, as expected. I have grown to love the bouquet of Rauchbier, oh the sausages, campfires, smoked bacon or is that ham? I just love the smoky, fatty, meaty smell. Maybe I am being susceptible but I think I got a whiff of banana. No, I do smell banana. The bouquet is quite inviting and well-rounded. Maybe it is just a little too soft but it is a wheat beer after all. Regardless, it is drinking time! The nose is a bloody liar! Bastard. Okay, that is a bit harsh. The palate is more indicative of what I was expecting with a Rauchbier-Weizen. Indeed the palate has the beechwood, smoky flavors but they are just lighter in flavor (especially in comparison to the smell), I detected the sausages and ham cooking on a smoldering campfire. Lovely. But the Weizen aspects are also detectable, mainly at the finish. This is when the cloves and bananas kick in. Yummy! The aftertaste opens up even more, lemons and wheat flavors really elevate this beer but the charred wood is never far behind. The palate is far less powerful than I as expecting and in this case that is a good thing. This is beautifully crafted; it is very flavorful but amazingly refreshing. The mouthfeel is also seduced by the wheat influences, it is smooth and a bit silky on the tongue, the carbonation is tickle too small, and the bulk is around medium/medium-light. The mouthfeel is very satisfying, it is much smaller than I was expecting but, yet again, I was pleasantly surprised! It is also amazingly drinkable. This might be my new go-to Weizen! Yeah right, like this is available in Nebraska! I bought a bottle in Iowa City. I will get more, either in KC or Iowa City. Rauchbier … I am in love!

Quite cloudy brown amber, almost sludgey, with a filmy head of mocha brown to off-white foam. Reasonable lacing. Head isn't massive or solid, but the body looks good.

Huge smoky, rustic aroma on the nose, wood fire, bacon and charcoal. Smells delicious. However, it's also slightly sweet - as though the bacon has been honey glazed. Delicious. So powerful, but so beautiful. I swear it's the best rauch nose I've had.

Mouthfeel is quite smooth, very pleasantly and delicately coating the mouth with smoke. And the smoke is the dominant character on the palate. There's hints of bitterness and a slight underlying sweetness, perhaps toffee, but these are sub-elements to the very beautiful smoke flavours.

This is a great rauch, smoky and powerful, but with the edges just slightly rounded by the wheat. I think it has amazing balance, leaving it supremely drinkable. Probably the best rauch I've ever had. Top notch.

25oz bottle into stange glass at 50 degrees.

Pours with a healthy 3-4F of creamy, tan head over a deep ruby tea colored body which is plenty cloudy. Very little carbonation showing. Light lacing.

Nice smokey aromas fill the glass, with a surprisingly noticeable apple pie quality as well - decent sweet spices. Smells like Fall.

Taste kicks off plenty roasty, with a slightly charred, woody flavor accompanied by a little more citrus (lemon) than was in the aroma, and some clove. A little richer on the palate than a typical weizen, with the smoke rounding out and balancing the crispness. Silky smooth on the palate, and a bit juicy.

This was highly drinkable on its own, however I'd recommend enjoying it with some smoked pork and/or sharp cheese. This would kill with a roast pork n' provolone sammy.

A - Huge eggshell head, thick and soapy. Dark brown effervescent murky body, looks like a dunkelweizen. Sloppy drools of lacing.

S - Ashy smoked bacon with a sweet honey glaze. These Schlenkerla rauchbiers are just my favourite smelling beers on the planet. A joy.

T - Follows the nose yet doesnt quite match the intensity. In addition to the smoke, bacon and honey, there are light notes of banana and wheat.

M - At first quite light in the body but then it becomes quite chewy and full bodied. Moderate carbonation.

O - I absolutely love it. I should add that this bottle was 2 months past its BB date.

I truly love the Urbock Rauchbier these folks make. I was looking for one the night I had this. Unforgiving smoke and I LIKE IT!!! This is beer with attitude, beer to drink with BBQ and great German sausages. Not for the the faint-hearted but a treat for the bold. That being said... it's good, very good, but not quite as good at the Urbock.
Pours a cloudy, amber-brown with a big fluffy, creamy head that left no lace.
Smell is smoked sausage and malt.
Taste is smoke, roasted malt, hops with just a hint of fruit in the back.
Medium/full bodied with light effervescence all over.
Drinkability is very high. And I wiill gladly have anything this brewery puts out.
