A - almost pitch black.
S - as many have commented there is a strong smokey aroma almost reminiscent of a campfire or charcoal. That alone give quite a bit of character
T - similar to the smell, you get a very robust smokey and meaty flavor.
M - finishes well and despite the robust flavor, the beer is smooth.
O - overall a very unique flavor is what is so impressive. It is a very bold attempt and though not really a session able brew, serves as a great reminder of different stylistic approaches.

Dark beer, not much head, slow ring and lost of sudsy lace. Smells like smoke. Lots of smoke. Ok, some bacon too. Taste like smoke. Lots of smoike. Ok, some bacon too. Mouth is medium, good carb, balance way out of whack. I wouldn't try this again, but I was glad to experience.

Poured deep dark brown, creamy tight little head and some very decent lacing much nicer than what I usually get from the bottle. aroma of smokey BBQ, meaty, bacon, smoke, delicious. Taste is just as it smells. nice balance between sweet meaty BBQ and a slight bitter aftertaste that leaves the palate clean and ready for food or the next sip. Lighter on the tongue than you'd expect and smooth as can be. Overall this is a beer experience, one that helped to change my own attitude as to what beer could be. It is one of my all time favourites.

On Tap at Brewery in Bamberg. Served in Tall glass.

Would pair greatly with intense cheeses and German Sausages.

A- Deep Black, dark Amber as viewed in the light. Slightly lighter than the marzen, two finger head, with mild retention, no lacing.

S- Lots of smoke, toasted malts.

T- Bready with lots of smoke. Slightly dry, bitter aftertaste.

M- Full bodied with medium carbonation.

D- Was a little more impressed by the taste than the Marzen but like it this beer is still heavy; leaving you weighted down and feeling like a meal in itself.

Poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Dark brown with red hue, about a finger of white head that quickly fades.

Smell: Lots of smoke, lots of bacon.

Taste: burnt bacon, campfire, lots of smoke, malty.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, very smooth, good carbonation.

Overall: Love it, bacon in a glass. Love the Schlenkerlas.

Poured on tap as part of a tasting at ChurchKey DC. Always nice to revisit this beer particularly if not had on tap.

Not much head given but still a body is a wonderful somewhat clear perfect deep dark brown, somewhere between walnut and chestnut. Red hues tint the edges of the glass

Nose has more malt, while mixing the classic beechwood smoke sense. Doesn't seem as salty as before.

Taste not unlike it's bottled brother but gives a mild tannic finish mixing sweeter malts and smoke with airy like whisps. Maintains solid simple mouthfeel and campfire warmth in the palate.

Overall seems to work and feel better on tap slightly.

Side Note: Eat it with bacon, pour it over bacon into a glass, or dip the bacon into the glass and eat it. Either way it makes for a better tasting because it really brings out more of the smoke flavor from the beer.

A: Rich dark brown with a ting of red that you can barely see through. Pours with a very nice white 2 finger head that shrinks down to around to about 1 while drinking

S: Probably my favorite part of the beer. If you love bacon and smoked beer, this is perfect for you. The smokiness is not as sweet like other smoked beers its a more subtle and well balanced aroma

T: A slight sweetness overcomes the taste at first, but quickly changes to a heavy and smooth smokiness and then finishes with a slightly more pronounced sweetness at the end.

M: Medium bodied with a perfect amount of carbonation.

O: One of the best representations of a smoked beer that you can get. The german's always do it right when it comes to smoked beers.

Had on tap tonight at Rustico in Ballston, VA.

a - Pours a somewhat transparent amber color with one inch of white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells very smokey, roasted malts, bacon, a hint of mint, and firewood.

t - Tastes of bacon, smokey roasted malts, toasted malts, firewood, and charcoal.

m - Medium body and low carbonation.

d - A very good example of a rauchbier, it's insanely smokey and bacony. I enjoyed it, and would have it again.

Beer served in a stange for some reason. Beer is dark brown with a thick head of small bubbles that completely coats the glass. Beer is clear and carbonation appears to be minimal.

Aroma is quite hickory with a lot of smoke. There is also some sweetness in there but its mostly smoke.

Beer is medium to light in body and the smoke is the dominant flavor in here. It finishes pretty cleanly and the smokiness kind of lingers in your mouth but not as an aftertaste. There is some mild caramel in there if you can see past the smoke. Overall its pretty good. Not my favorite of the bunch but a damn fine one.

Drank from my Westmalle Chalice.

A - Wow this beer pours a deep mahognay colour with a thick off white head that stays the distance and laces the glass

S - Heavy smoked wood from the bottle. Once poured has some smoked cheese aromas about it.

T - Such beautiful smokey malts that turn to smoked bacon and schenken speck, a hint of sweetness, but this beer is awesome

M - Full body and low carbonation, absoulte work of art.

D - What an experience this beer is. A+ all the way.

On-tap 11/7/09 at Track 84, in Warwick, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a dark brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is full of smoke along with roasted malts, caramel and a touch of hops.

T: The taste is likewise very smoky with flavors of lightly roasted malts, some mildly sweet flavors of caramel and chocolate. The malt character is hearty and there's a good balance. The after-taste is slightly smoky and slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is one beer that does the smoked flavor quite well and would be one of the first beers I'd look for if I were in the mood of that kind of beer.

Poured into a 8 oz goblet at the Broken Barrel Tavern. Had to try this one since it's not easy to come by. Never had this style of beer, Rauchbier, German for smoked beer.

Pours dark brownwith a small cream head that leaves little lacing.

Smell is sweet smokey malts

Taste is a very aggressive smoked malt flavor with some bitterness on the way down. The smoke is a little overwhelming at first.

Reading the description of a Rauchbier, this beer is very true to the style, so I had trouble rating this one. It's definitely worth trying as this is a unique bee style. However, I don't think I could drink more than one of these at a sitting.

Unfiltered version on tap at Maxs

Deep amber with a thin, tan head with good retention. Great lacework too! On the nose, this is glorious. Smoky bacon with a great brown sugar/caramel character, lending an almost BBQ like aroma. Mild tobacco smoke is also present. The opening flavors are smoky with a woody, smoky bacon character with a prominent earthy hop bite. Excellent. Mild sweetness with caramel and brown sugar mid palate, before a dry, smoky finish. Medium in body with high carbonation, a touch higher than it needs to be. This beer is a joy to drink, especially this fresh!

The unfiltered version... on tap at Max's the other day.

The beer pours a blackish brown color, but with amber orange hilights. Head retention and lacing are excellent in this beer, something I was not expecting. On the nose... when it comes to smoked beers, does it get any better then this? There is a rich, sweet, smoked meat aroma to this beer, and I'm immediately put in mind of black forest ham and smoked salmon. Flavors on the palate replicate the nose, but after sitting in the glass and drinking this beer for a while, I'm hugely impressed by how well the brewer has melded in the smoked flavors to the underlying sweet malt. Ultimately, the sweet, malty bock flavor dominates the flavor profile (a good thing), but the smokey flavor is always there in the back ground. Very, very impressive. Mouthfeel is rich and full, and this beer is suprisingly drinkable considering the amount of smokey flavor one gets.

This is really good stuff!

A- On-tap at Redlight Redlight. Poured into a .5 liter mug. Pours a dark reddish brown with a nice off-white head.

S- I am absolutely in love with the aroma of the Schlenkerla brews. This one on-tap is phenomenal. It is filled with a lot of smoked malts, yummy!

T- The taste like the aroma is fantastic! It is deliciously smokey and very quaffable. Near perfection!

M- The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

D- This beer is amazingly drinkable as I could easily throw back a few mugs and still crave more. This is definitely up there on my favorites list.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a rich, translucent brown with a tinge of red on the edges. A very small, light tan head dissipated quickly, leaving more lacing than I anticipated.

The aroma is bacon cooked over a campfire. The dominant flavor is of course, smoke. The body is lighter than a lot of bocks. Drinkability suffers because the smoke flavor quickly grew tiresome.

Over a decent beer with some unique flavors, worth trying.

Had this at Max's during their German Beer Fest. Poured with a little head, but after the initial head was gone, couldn't get it back. No lacing at all.

The smell, wow, am I smelling a beer or a nice bit of smoked meat here? Awesome smells I had here.

Now the taste here was the beer felll flat in my opinion, this being my first "smoke beer" this might be obvious I wouldn't quite like it at first, maybe its an acquired taste. The smokey taste was overwhelming, which for someone who like the style would probably be great, but for me it wasn't so. Along with that came some nice maltness, with a hint of sweetness and bitterness here. The mouth was very full bodied, keep with the smokey theme here(which was good here like with the smell), like a stout.

Easily the most interesting beer I've ever had, I'll most likely give this beer and the style overall another chance, but the smokiness was more then I had bargained with

Had this on tap in Bamberg

A : It was a nice dark brown with a good head

S : BBQ, bacon, smoked pork, heaven.

T : The only way to describe it was liquid bacon. Really rich. Also, lots of smoke flavor.

M : Rich, creamy, meal in a glass

D : I loved this beer and wish I could easily get it on draft here. I've had it in the bottle but that in no way compares to the goodness on tap.

One of the best on the planet!

Had this beer on tap in October, took notes, got really intoxicated several times, and lost my notes somewhere in Munich. (I think)

This beer is absolutely beautiful. Sat at a table with my brother (ungespundet) and our great friend (TTU94) and an elderly German couple who we shot the shit with via a translator (Ungespundet).

Dark, smoky, complex, in your face beer. Not for the faint hearted at all. But if you can make it, this is one of those rare beers that you will remember for a long time. Although the alchohol content may make you forget everything else.

If you get the chance to go to Germany, stop in Bamberg and visit this and the other 10 or so breweries and you will be in beer heaven.

On tap poured into a 12oz mug.

All I have to say is WOW. This one was bizarre. Warned by bartenders that it was intense and most wouldnt like, but I have to say I think I enjoyed it.

A: Crimson colored with a fluffy dark head that stayed there for the full beer. Great lacing.

S: Pulled BBQ pork straight off the spicket. Out of control.

T: Were back to the BBQ here, didnt let you down. As advertised. Couldnt believe how much I liked it. This is really like having a liquid meal.

M: Good enough. Did I mentioned this had BBQ characteristics.

D: Obviously, this would be perfect with some good BBQ but also good on its own. Couldnt drink every day but a nice treat.

Had on-tap at the Old Bay, in New Brunswick, NJ:

Pours dark brown with a large head that descends to a thin cover.

The smell is of smoked meat with Scotch-like undertones.

The taste is of smoked meat with Scotch-like undertones as well. Very robust/rich.

It is smooth and full-bodied. Very long finish.

A nice one to pair with the obvious - smoked meats. My favorite of the three Rauchbiers I've had from this brewery. Drinkable for style, though still a "special occassion" brew.

Pours a dark ruby with a nice brownwhite head. Looks like motor oil.

Not as thick as it looks. But oh goodness it tastes thick, even if it don't feel thick. BACON AND CHEESE. Like, a bacon and cheese sandwich. And, yes, drinking bacon and cheese is a thought that appeals to me.

Unlike their smoked marzen, which is too concerned with putting up a proper front of beeriness to really let loose, Heller-Trum's smoked Urbock cranks the smoke up to 11. For those of us who like a SMOKEY smoke beer, this one is a must-try.

Deepest, darkest mahogany, with a very long-lasting two-finger tan head.

Spicy-sweet-smoky nose that strongly suggests sausage. Faint roastedness behind that.

Rich in the mouth, and quite dry but not really bitter, with more of the sausage notes but also the roastedness coming to the fore as well. Finish is chewy with slight bitterness.

A big, distinctive brew that nevertheless seems well balanced. Not too sweet and not too bitter, but still full in body and flavor. A beer that really delivers loads of flavor without slamming you on the head with big sweet malt or bitter hops.

Had this on tap at the Map Room in Chicago, and its the beer i remember the best because of how interesting and delicious it was. Poured very dark into a Schlenkerla glass with big lacing and a large white head. Odor was of smoke, hickory wood and malts. Taste is fantastically jerk-o-licious. super beefy smokiness. Nice malt underneath makes it so its not just a one-trick pony. Im always amazed when i have a good rauchbier about how you can make a beer taste like this. Very full and excellent drinakability. Makes me think i'm sitting by a fire. mmmm.

I've had this beer many, many times on tap and in the bottle. The only way to really describe it is as an "aquired taste". I've heard the bouquet and taste be described as a distanct bacon aroma and flavor. I don't get many pork undertones from it but it's definately smoky.

From what I understand, most American breweries that attempt rauchbiers smoke the barley they use to brew the beer with but Aecht Schlenkerla actually drop burning ambers into the beer while it's fermenting to give it that very strong and distinct smoky flavor. I would say that the flavor is closer to burnt wood then bacon so that makes sense.

This is a great beer to go along with stews, chilis, BBQ and cigars. Whenever I'm at a good beer bar, I can't leave without having one.
