Served in a 25 cl Aecht Fastenbier glass (looks like a mini imperial pint glass) on tap at Maduro in Madison, WI. Medium dirty orange brown body. Hazy with frothy head the color of aged white wallpaper in a smoker’s home. Sweet smoky aroma with a subtle bitter hoppness. Very mellow and light bodied, and yet it tasted like a mesquite grilled steak. Really, after one gets past the initial blast of prairie fire smoke, this beer tastes just like a nice hunk of beef. Finishes with a nice caramel sweetness. Very easy to drink. Overall, I’m not really sure if this is my thing. I don’t know a lot about rauchbiers but this one seems pretty damn great for the style to me. It’s less intimidating then some of the others out there, smoke wise, but the chewy meatiness is just great. What a unique mouthfeel!

On tap at Bavarian Lodge served in a 16oz tumbler glass

It poured a clear dark cola color with a nice 3 finger head that lasted several minutes.

I've had a nice handfull of smoked beers in my life and this one smelled the most like how I would want my smoked beers. Notes of bacon and baked beans hit me first. It was a great aroma without much bitterness, roastiness, or astringency that some other had. I knew I had found a winner.

The taste really delivered on that promise. Right away a smooth smokiness overwhelmed me and memories of grilling meats came to my head. A touch of bitterness then came forward but was really dominated by the malt. A little sweet malt flavor matched the smoke to bring back those baked bean flavors. I really enjoyed this beer as the flavor put the smoke first and foremost and didn't leave much of anything else.

The mouthfeel was crisp and on the thin side but I think it complimented the beer well and enhanced drinkability. As with other smoke beers I've had if they are too dominating and full bodied the pint seems to be a challenge about halfway through. This beer was light on the tougne and the smoke didn't leave a harsh aftertaste. My first smoke beer from this well known brewery and I will be seeking out their other offerings.

Appearance: tan, with a big head, medium carbonation, clear

Smell: pork, light spice, smoke, and small malt

Taste: same as the smell, with the smoke being more pronounced, but not overpowering

Mouthfeel: on the sweet side due to the malt, medium bodied, with a hoppy finish

Drinkability: This is my second favorite offering from the brewery and well worth a try. The smoke is not overpowering and the flavor is incredible. While I will not drive the hour to taste this again this year, I will happily order this again come next Lent.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2015. Purchased recently from Cotteridge Wines in Birmingham. This is Schlenkerla's Lent bier - a type that might in the past have been consumed by monks for Lent.

A: Poured into a dimpled pint mug. Bottle conditioned. A hazy reddish-brown hue with fine sediment and intense carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy off-white foam with superb retention; this settles as a thick surface layer. Some lacing.

S: Aroma of rich smoky malt with hints of smoked bacon/ham, sweet caramel, mild grain, barley sugar, subtle yeast esters, a touch of kippers and faint stewed leaves. It really does call to mind a smoked ham. Fantastically balanced.

T: Tastes of smoky caramel malt with a restrained bitter finish. Notes of smoky grain, caramel, smoked ham, subtle barley sugar, earthy yeast, stewed leaves and a hint of kippers. Slightly sweet, followed by a subdued leafy bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly with well-judged carbonation and excellent body. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of smoky caramel malt, mild sugar, faint yeast esters and leafy bitterness.

O: Superb - a world-class brew. Looks great, while the aroma and flavour possess a wonderful balance of smokiness and rich caramel malt, underpinned by an understated bitterness. Lovely body. Top-notch; the result of centuries of brewing and refinement. While I appreciate that smoked beers aren't for everyone, this should definitely be on your must-try list.

On tap at Bullfrog brewery, the guest tap. This smoked lager/helles had a yellow body,w hisp of white head, and some lace lines. Bit of smoke, light mouthfeel. Smoked flavour was decent. Minerally, balanced with a bit of malt for drinkability, hits the mark.

Almost no head, ruby brown body, very dark.

Nose is full of rich, oaky smoke.

The rich malt of a brown ale (though I think this is a lager, right?), almost sweet. Dripping with smoke, and with enough body to back it up. Excellent.

Rich mouthfeel but not super thick.

An outstanding rauch. Worth the hype/limited availability? Maybe. Worth a try? Definitely.

Had a tulip of fastenbier at Crescent & Vine in Astoria. Honestly, it's pretty similar to the rest of Schlenkerla's rauchbiers. Aside from the dark amber color, it's also a crisper and a touch lighter. The smoked malts are cleaner. As in, this beer doesn't just taste like bacon, it has a dusty flour and bready malt undertone to is. The dark malts are hard to pull out, but there's a slight hit of smooth caramel malt. I think it's my favorite of the brewery's many smoked beers.

10 oz pour at Memphis Tap Room, Fishington, Philly.

Medium brown with small head. Fantastic rauchbier aroma of sweet smoked meat and bacon. The thrid I have had from this brewery adn I have never been disappointed. The flavor is full on smokiness but surprisingly light. By memory I can't detect a lot of differemce from their Marzen. As with other rauchbiers from this brewery, amazingly drinkable...I don't get tired of this intense, wonderful smoky flavor. More!

My first rauchbier and I'm worried that I have started at the top and there is no bettering this delicious brew. Colour is a deep rusty brown with a nice head. Smell is smoke and spice. Taste is smoke and smooth sweetness. I'm in love!

PInt served in a curvy Schlenkerla glass, rings of webby lace, a hazy deep unfiltered brown-amber.

Mild smoke in the nose, even and not too heavy.

Taste is a mixture of the robust smoky malt, and a bock-like lager. Beefy but not over the top. Easy enough to session, i'm eating my words about the sessionable Brazilian Rauchbier that was reviewed yesterday. Earthy malt and a very mild hop define the middle and end of the brew, with the ever present smoke.

Balanced with a good level of carbonation, this is second only to the Helles for sessionability.

Tap: Poured a clear light maple color ale with a small foamy head with average retention. Aroma consists of smoked malt with light woody notes and floral undertones. Taste is dominated by easy drinking notes of smoked malt with light wood notes and floral undertones. Body is full with somewhat of a fat mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Great mix between complexity and drinkability.

Poured from the bottle into a becher Aecht Schlenkerla pint glass. Vintage 2015.

Fluffy booming but easily controlled head top, three fingers on the punch with creamy and fluffy big retention and a cream dark brown color to almost dark vanilla white. Body color is deep copper up to the light, chestnut brown overall with deep red notes in the center of the glass. Still a classic looker.

Aroma can't be beat. Sweet malts, moderate smoke, and salivating salty sausage and meat jerky with a great balance. Soft bacon, campfires and greatness.

Palate hits all the right notes. SLight creamy character, but not as big as on tap, and even some very playful prickly carbonation, but doesn't take away from the feel. Chewy malt density and softness with light smoke character and even a touch of sweet brown sugar but oh so slightly. Sweet leaf tobacco finish just ever so slightly as well.

Looks like Schlenkerla can do no wrong.

Poured on tap into a tumbler at Pizza Paradiso DC.

In appearance a light off cream white head is present that slowly falls. A real gorgeous red cherry wood like body that is clear as well. Some small lacing while drinking. Love the color on this real nice.

Nose is good but more subdued than other Aecht smoke offerings. Mild smell of classic Rauchbier smoke, but there is a hint of bitterness smelling almost behind this as well.

Taste is at first very malty and less smokey than what seems on the nose. There is a real nice mellow hop finish it seems but also a bit of carbonation too. Almost herbal tea like.

Overall pretty solid, glad I had it and would have again at the drop of a hat.

Reviewing the Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier from Brauerei Heller-Trum out of Germany.

Enjoying a 10 oz tap pour at the Brickhouse BBQ during happy hour. Served in a god-knows-what-you-call-it beer glass on 03/29/12. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: The beer is a deep amber/mahogany color depending on how the light hits it. Surprisingly transparent given its dark color. Served with no head save for an off-white ring around the glass. Below average lacing, average retention. 4/5

Smell: Barley, bready malt, rye bread, caramel and a modest amount of campfire smoke. Pork chops and hickory wood. 4/5

Taste: Rye spice and black peppercorn upfront quickly turns into a heavy smoked wood and spicy hickory flavor that coats the palate. A lot more smoke in the flavor than in the aroma. Caramel, light bready malt and a non-descript "fatty meat" flavor on the midpalate. Like a campfire in your mouth, the smoked rye and hickory flavors really pop on the midpalate. Finishes with smoke and barley. Very interesting flavors. This beer is growing on me with every sip. 4/5

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, medium carbonation. The smokiness is really prickly on the palate. Smoked and spicy finish. 4/5

Overall: A fantastic smoked beer. Kudos to Brickhouse for getting something so different from the mainstream on tap. I will certainly have another pour of this.

Pairings: A Reuben sandwich or a pastrami sandwch on rye bread with a light amount of hot sauce.

Cost: $4.50 for a 10 oz pour.

Growler courtesy of EriktheRed. I had been in search of this one for a while so needless to say I was thrilled to finally land it. Served chilled and poured into a 24 ounce pilsner glass, this one was consumed on 05/16/2009.

The pour was dark brown, caramel in color with a minimal head on top of it. Smooth look with a nice bit of carbonation streaming up from the bottom of the glass. Rich aroma, shit this was the most intense smelling smoked beer I had ever run across. Rich smoked malts, like smoked beef just overtake everything. Like a campfire in my living room, insane. As it warms some nice touches of peat are all over. Carries over well into the flavor as every taste is rich, smokier, and more pronounced then the one before. Huge flavor here as the smooth, light, and even body of it made it soo damn sessionable I threw down my first glass and was turning around looking for more.

Overall outstanding. This was the definition of the smoked beer I was looking for. Super drinkable and a near perfect example of the style.

On tap at Churchkey. Clear amber color. Thin white head disappears quickly, but leaves a nice patch of lace.

Great smoky, meaty aroma typical of some of the Schlenkerla beers. Hard to pick up much else, perhaps a bready note, with just a dash of wood and caramel.

Bready malt character, which is clean. Smoke comes in and doesn't dominate, but rather adds a nice wood and meaty feel. Dry finish.

Lighter body, soft carbonation. The base of this beer is nice, but when the smoke comes in it really adds another dimension. Fantastic.

s: aromas of fantastic pure hardwood smoke, heavily aromatic without any "meaty" notes, backed by a supportive malt spine that provides some toasted sugar and dark fruit while staying mostly out of the way

m: carbonation around low-moderate, body medium

t: genuine hardwood smoke, strong but sinking into a balanced state with a body of lightly toasty malts, some dark fruit sugars - but hardly sweet with plenty of cleaner lager malts present to thin things out, leather, totally drying with a very mild, grassy hop flavor

o: maybe there were some external factors, but this one didn't really stand out in relation to other Aecht rauchbiers I've had - a superb example just the same, but not more special than any other from the brewery

On tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt. Clear mahogany brown with a lasting off-white cap. Smells like a ham sandwich: smoked meat, saltiness and dark crusty bread are all covered. There's a little bit of sweetness, too. Light on the tongue, less sweet than Schlenkerla's marzen or ur-bock, this is sort of like a session rauchbier. Unlike their helles, the meaty, woody smoke character doesn't hold any punches here; it's the dominant flavor, with a bready, toasted malt backbone rounding out the flavor. I really enjoyed this one on the whole, possibly my favorite from this brewery behind their excellent helles.

A - A fairly dark inviting amber hue with a thick foamy head

S - Upon initial nosing one can easily be confused by what can only be described as what would be the result of smoking fish wrapped in bacon in a fireplace.. and then attempting to eat the bacon-fat soaked embers

T - Every year in Memphis there is an international barbeque festival in which hundreds of lucky pigs are bless to be a party to, which for a pig would be tantamount to nirvana. The oversized smokers employed by the pitmasters accrue a healthy amount of grease in the traps underneath which are not much more than residue of charred wood and rendered flesh of some of the luckiest pigs in the world. If you were to empty the collective contents of every smoker at the festival into a single vat, and then decant a single portion into a pint glass, the result would be indistinguishable from Schlenkerla Fastenbier.

M - Medium feel, well-carbonated. I find that this works rather well with the taste and profile of this beverage.

D - Though this is a highly interesting style and expression of a rauchbier, it is not something that I would want to partake in more than once or so in a given month, and only in the winter months at that.

enjoyed a glass on tap at Track 84 in RI. nice roasty brown with a cream-colored head/lacing. aroma is pure rauchbier: campfire, bacon, charcoal. this is one of those beers that tastes exactly as it smells. like drinking a liquid campfire, but somehow it works. having this alongside a Stone Smoked Porter really highlights the strong flavors. this smoky beast makes the Stone taste like a run of the mill porter. not sure that i would have more than one, but the experience was well worth it. truly a unique beer.

Served in a .5L Schlenkerla willibecher at the Map Room. Dense head, delicate sheets of lacing. Brown amber color, with varying shades due to the willi glass.

Smoke aroma recalls canned sardines somehow. Oddly appropriate for Lent. Smells rather bright and fresh, unlike danker, meatier scent of the Urbock, perhaps. Something sweeter comes through. This is an incredibly fun beer to smell.

Refreshing. Definite trademark smoke flavor, but not super huge. Sweetness is more upfront. Malt profile like a Helles almost. Finishes malty with the lingering salty smoke, and mild bitterness.

Medium body and light carbonation give it a creamy feel.

I never find Schlenkerla beers to be super quaffable. The flavor is so bold to start with that I take small sips, and before I know it, I've had about a tenth of the glass after 10 minutes. Does start to go down easier after getting used to the flavor. Really could use a meal with this. All in all, no regrets in trying this, but I wouldn't lose sleep over missing it. Fans of the brewery won't be disappointed.

On draft at Waterfront Ale House, Brooklyn.

Poured a murky dark copper hue with a two finger creamy white head. There was very good retention and lacing.

The smell featured an all encompassing and clean hardwood smokiness.

The taste was upfront hardwood smoke with some caramel. Again, the delicious smokiness dominated.

The mouthfeel was full for the style.

Overall a delicious and highly drinkable smokey delight.

On tap at Kickbacks Gastropub in Jax. Poured into a Unibroue tulip. Mild head atop a ruby/ruddy brown body. Lacing is sticky and almost leaves sand like bubbles on the glass, then leaves a creamy swirl in the body of the liquid. Aroma is certainly smoky and toasted. Campfire and beef jerky, both peppered and kippered come to mind. Taste is backed by a bit of malt sweetness but the smoked flavor dominates. No my favorite style, really hard to review a beer in a style I don't love but I can't imagine drinking more than one of these in a sitting even if this style is your favorite.

I am not sure if I had this on tap or cask. I am assuming since I had it at the keller it was on cask. The body is light amber brown with a red hue. It had a creamy head with good follow through lace. The aroma is a deep smoke and wood scent. The flavor was like eating meat and drinking a beer it the same time with some subtle hop tones. It was light bodied and went down easy.

I'm really not a fan of Rauchbier but this one is a little more standable than most. Someone told me it was like bacon beer and although I agree that bacon makes everything better that doesn't mean that being bacon like makes something better. Basically, if you take a number of gulps, the smokiness starts to fade and the maltiness, which is quite impressive, comes through and you see why some people like this beer.

If you like Rauchbier, I think this might be a very good one.

On tap at Three Floyds, of all places. Served in a stein.

Dark brown, chestnut at the edges. Light retention with a tan head that falls to a collar, minimal lacing. Nose has a characteristic Schlenkerla smoke, burnt and toasted wood, smoked meats,toasted dark bread and sweet malt notes. Caramel too. Sweet smoke on the palate, campfire-y intially and quite woody. More toasty bread and caramel flavour. Smoke carries well into the finish, hefty body with great balance. Exceptional flavour and another winner (as always) from Bamberg. Wish I had ordered this earlier in the evening to enjoy with the FFF pulled pork.
