4 oz sample at Rustico served in a mini snifter.

Pours a clear ruby amber with a finger of creamy tab head that fades to a collar and thick sheets of lace. Bacon and smokey aroma, roast malt and mild sweetness in the finish. Flavor is very smooth and balanced. Fairly light body with fine, soft carbonation and a clean finish. Slightly sweet malt presence throughout, much less meaty or abrasive than some rauchs with a pleasant smokiness throughout that gracefully fades out through the finish.

On tap at the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL. An incredible smoked beer available for a very short tIme during lent. If you are a smoked beer fan this is a must try. This is so drinkable that even if you are just thinking of trying a smoked beer this is the one to try, you will be hooked as this version is a "gateway" smoked beer. Don't fear the smoke and enjoy!

On tap at Churchkey. Clear amber color. Thin white head disappears quickly, but leaves a nice patch of lace.

Great smoky, meaty aroma typical of some of the Schlenkerla beers. Hard to pick up much else, perhaps a bready note, with just a dash of wood and caramel.

Bready malt character, which is clean. Smoke comes in and doesn't dominate, but rather adds a nice wood and meaty feel. Dry finish.

Lighter body, soft carbonation. The base of this beer is nice, but when the smoke comes in it really adds another dimension. Fantastic.

Had a tulip of fastenbier at Crescent & Vine in Astoria. Honestly, it's pretty similar to the rest of Schlenkerla's rauchbiers. Aside from the dark amber color, it's also a crisper and a touch lighter. The smoked malts are cleaner. As in, this beer doesn't just taste like bacon, it has a dusty flour and bready malt undertone to is. The dark malts are hard to pull out, but there's a slight hit of smooth caramel malt. I think it's my favorite of the brewery's many smoked beers.

I've been in love with this beer since the moment I tasted it.
A- Color is a beautiful, light red-brown with a brief, fuzzy head that leaves little to no lacing.

S/T- It smells wonderfully smokey and dry to match the taste. And oh what taste- like campfire bacon on a dewy spring morning! Please forgive the melodramatic simile.

M- I must admit, for a fastenbier (which should be thick, as they are 'meal substitutes'), it is a little watery. However this grants it a fairly accessible smoothness.

O- Great beer. You won't find it at a package store because it doesn't come bottled, so if you happen upon it at a bar/growler store, you should take advantage of it.

I am not sure if I had this on tap or cask. I am assuming since I had it at the keller it was on cask. The body is light amber brown with a red hue. It had a creamy head with good follow through lace. The aroma is a deep smoke and wood scent. The flavor was like eating meat and drinking a beer it the same time with some subtle hop tones. It was light bodied and went down easy.

This poured out as a reddish looking brown color with a very thin white colored head on top. The head settles quickly and leaves no lacing... The smell of the beer is smoked, there is no doubt about it. The aroma of this beer though it not quite as smokey as some of the other brews from this brewery. The taste of thee beer was pretty good, mostly smokey malts with a light saltiness and a bit of toasted flavors in there too. The mouthfeel was a little watery I thought. Overall this brew was pretty good, I liked it as it was but can't say that I thought it was the best out of all of them.

Thank you David for this treat at Beachwood BBQ in Long Beach! Been wanting to try this for a long time!

Pours a fairly clear burnt orange/red with a nice white frothy head. Smells smokey and light. Some nice malty sweetness on the backbone. brown sugar notes on the nose. Smells great. Tastes brown sugary and sweet. The smokiness is light and tasty. Finishes very dry. Overall a great light smoky brew that is distinctly better than any other rauchbier I've had

Pours a deep amber color with a big fluffy white head. The aroma is smoky with some charred wood, smoked meat, and a mild maltiness... mostly it smells of sweet aromatic smoke and that’s just fine. The flavor is surprisingly dry and bitter while maintaining that strong smoky character I hate to say smoked meat again as this does not actually taste like meat, but rather a bit like the smoke flavor you get with a very high quality smoked meat. The beer has a nice chocolate note to it as well, and this is perhaps one of the most complex of the Schlenkerla lineup. A real treat, I can’t wait till it comes around next year.
