(on tap at Brauhaus Schmitz, Philly - poured into a flared pils flute)

A: yellow gold, curious mild haze.... thinnish, fizzy head (unclean lines/faucet here?) - no lace

S: mild, blandish malt... light amount of phenolic smoke coming through... not particularly hoppy (just as an observation).... smells like a Helles, alright, just with subtle, flat aromas

T: vague clove phenolics.... only a light presence of smoke - was kinda curiously hoping for much more... not one particular element stands out.... blurry, flat malt and bready yeast flavors - seems "washed out"

M: quite light and clean.... not particularly effervescent... fine for what it's bringing flavor-wise which, if it were to have more flavor, it would need more body

O: was hoping for a bit more out of this, considering how wonderfully flavorful some of their other beers are.... the low level of smoke flavor wasn't necessarily a bad thing.... come to think of it, the last time I had a bland Schlenkerla on tap (the Lent beer) it was at Brauhaus, hmmm...

draft at sams in Durham, into a duck rabbit pint glass.

pours a crisp yellowish gold with a nice inch thick head. the smell is very pronounced with malts and hops and even a bit of smoke, though this isn't one of their smoked beers. the taste is very flavorful with typical lager characteristics and tastes ALMOST smoked, but not quite. I very much dig it. light bodied, mild carbonation.

overall one of the better lagers out there. recommended.

Pours a clean pale yellow color with a white head. In the aroma, lemon citrus and a small smoke presence. In the taste, a light lager with notes of lemon citrus and a nice smoke. A small smoke bite and a lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a semi dry smoke in the aftertaste. A bit thin and the smokiness is a bit faint.

On-tap at the Churchkey in Washington, D.C.

Poured a hazy gold with a soapy white head. Aromas of smoke, light, crisp malt, and some grassy hops. Taste is similar to the nose, slightly meaty smoke, crisp malt, honey, and toasted grain. Finish is long-lasing and bitter, and smacks nicely of smoke. Mouthfeel is light and crisp, very drinkable despite the advertised 6.5% ABV (BA says 4.3%, not sure which is correct). Overall a nice intro to Schlenkerla, but give me the Marzen or Urbock any day!

On tap at Engine company 15 in Jax Beach. – It was served in a 10 oz. snifter. Beer is gold with just a light chill haze. It has an off-white head.

I get smoke, malts and a bit of spice in the aroma.

The smoke flavor does not overpower the base beer. It is slightly sweet with a bit of band aid at the finish. I like the subtle grain and spice notes.

The mouth is sharp with active carbonation.

I thought this was pretty solid.

Served on tap at monks cafe.

A: Hazy straw body topped with a one finger thick white head. Good visible carbonation.

S: Quite impressive that no smoked malt was used to make this beer because the nose is all smoke and malt.

T: Crisp malt, but with that smokiness overlaying everything. Even with all the smokiness it still manages to be a light and crisp beer.

M: Nice and light visits with just a bit of thickness from the smoke. Very classic german lager feel.

D: Very good summer drinker. The smoke adds a perfect amount of punch to differentiate out from an ordinary lager.

On-tap at the Farmers' Cabinet. For no rauch, pretty damned rauchy.

A: The lager is a golden yellow color, hazed a bit but still translucent. A white head, right in line with the lightness of the ale, leaves a few strands of lace behind.

S: The lagerbier has a sturdy smokiness ingrained in it, even if it doesn't include the normal Bamberger smoked malts. The helles lager drips of the Bamberger scent, even with no smoked malts included. A tribute to subtlety.

T: The lager is a light, chewy beer, one that picks up more smokiness by accident that most can muster up intentionally. The biscuity grains are bready; hops are an afterthought. Between the start and finish, the lager's smoked body takes hold. That smoke, meaty as it is, is significantly lighter than Schlenkerla's other offerings. That reduced flavor makes the lager much more palatable, more enjoyable to sip through.

M: The smoke makes the beer, a full flavor that doesn't scorch the earth. A beer that paired nicely with several of the cheeses throughout the night.

Dirty Truth.

A- Gold body with a small foamy white head. Good retention. Sticky suds but a lack of lace.

S- Smoky light malt with a noble hop backdrop, floral and earthy.

T- Nice and smoky but the malt is nice and light, allowing a good drinkable smoked beer. Some hop notes and spice.

MF- Light body with a nice creamy feel.

Light body and smoke makes for a refreshing beer, not usually what I get in smoked beers.

On tap at The Blue Nile.

Champagne like appearance. Light golden color with a miniscule highly head.

Light sweet and wheaty smell. Bit of Belgian yeast scent.

Complex for the style. Lightly sweet and fruity. Nice smoke presence with a grainy, musty taste.

Some prickly carbonation with a lighter body.

Easy to drink and a unique beer for the style. Glad I tried it.

At the South Philly Tap Room. Poured a cloudy yellow/straw with two fingers of white head, and good retention. Picked up smoke in the nose, but less so than in some of the other Schlenkerla styles. Tasted very smokey initially, then more malty, and then a nice hoppy/malty finish, with smoke/malt in the aftertaste. Nicely carbonated medium/thin feel. Very sessionable.

Aecht Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier. On tap @ DBGB

Appearance:
Honey golden in color with a 1" frothy snow white head and little bubbles from carbonation perpetually streaming up the side of the glass. Inviting but not remarkable.

Aroma:
Some smokey, oaky notes to begin with. There's definitely light malt in the nose as well.

Taste:
Oh wow! This is where it really shines and outperforms my wildest expectations. The sommelier at DBGB informed me that the beer is stored in wood casks and produced with machinery that imparts the smokiness. The initial flavor of biscuity malts and fruity esters in not immediately impressive. But the addition of the very slight woody taste makes all the difference and brings it into perfect balance. It tasted fresh, refreshing, but also soft and inviting.

Mouthfeel & Drinkability:
Medium-bodied, decent amount of carbonation (I'm glad this one wasn't too carbonated as it would have overpowered the woody, smokey flavor). Very much a session beer at 4.3%, and the woody flavor in conjunction with its solid Munich helles lager attributes make this one a pleasure to consume in scalable quantities.

On tap at Deep Ellum, Allston MA.

Clear, pale straw color. Fluffy white head with decent retention and lace for a Helles. Smells like smoked salmon and dry, light grain. Taste is again, smoked salmon, with mild fruit and light grain. Well attenuated. Good camping beer.

A helles for smoked salmon lovers?

Saw this beer on draft at a local beer bar and couldn't resist. I am not a rauchbier fan and I have tried the other beers from this brewery. I was excited that they made a non-Rauch beer but in hindsight, what exactly was I expecting?

Beer is yellowish and has a slight haze to it. White head and good lacing on the glass.

The aroma of this beer put me off of it almost immediately. It smelled acidic and terrible. Like spoilage. I swirled the beer and smelled it again and this time it was greatly improved. Could pick up on some sweetness and the malt. I'm still penalizing it for the first whiff.

This beer has (SURPRISE!) a slight aftertaste of smoke. Seriously, what did I expect? The brewery responsible for making 5 beers, 4 of them are the world's best Rauchbiers and this one, they couldn't escape it. I wonder if the smoke flavor is intentional or just ingrained in everything they produce. Like they will never be able to make a beer without a slight bit of smoke in it, just because their equipment is coated with it.

Overall the beer was smooth and kind fo bland. The smokey aftertaste was unnecessary and abbreviated my pleasure of this beer. Sorry Schlenkerla. Not interested.

Served in a nonic pint glass. A glass of cold water on the side to sip from periodically.

Appearance: As served the beer is a bright, clear, golden yellow color with a 1/3" white head that recedes soon, leaving a small ring of foam around the glass. Sipping leaves sparse lacing for most of the beer.

Smell: The aroma is fresh and bready from the malt. There are traces of smoke and some light caramel, but the smoky character is clearly there even though not overpoweringly so.

Taste: The flavors are fresh and crisp with the bready light sweet malt and some lightly smokiness from the beechwood smoke used by the brewery in malting their other beers. There is also a nice crisp bitterness from the hops.

Mouthfeel: The mouth feel is medium-bodied and soft with moderate carbonation. The finish begins with light caramel sweetness and trails off into a light dry bitterness with the smoky character pervasive throughout.

Drinkability: This is a very refreshing and nicely drinkable beer that I enjoyed a great deal. I could easily have several in an evening and I won't hesitate to have this one again and I certainly will look for it in the future. Even thought the malts in this one are not smoked it is amazing just how much smoke this beer picks up just from being brewed in the same brewery on the same equipment. This smoky character definitely sets it apart from the field of Helles lagers and does so in a good way, to my tastes.

Served in a standard pint. Poured a bright, translucent yellow with a half inch foamy, bright white head that eventually dissipates into a solid skim. Some strands of delicate lacing exposed during the session. Nose was very mild - some cereal grains. Taste not at all consistent with nose - smokey, jerky, some sweetness at the back (corn syrup?). Reminds me of a rauchbier. Mouthfeel is light bodied with a consistent background carbonation from sip to swallow. Drinkability is decent - not what I expected. Good complexity, but not as refreshing as I anticipated.

On tap at Max's for their second German beer fest

The pour is light yellow with brilliant clarity. The thin, white head doesn't hang around too long, receding to a ring. On the nose, there's a light smoky character, with a touch of butter and a crisp, biscuit/cracker character. Clean. On the palate, it opens crisp and mildly bitter with a firm earthy hop bite and a touch of lemon. Mild smoky character, woody in nature. Dry and bitter on the finish. The body's light, and the crisp, refreshing finish and great carbonation make for a truly drinkable beer

A- On-tap at Redlight Redlight in Orlando. Poured into a .5L mug. Pours a golden yellow color with a large off-white head.

S- The aroma like all beers from this brewery has a very pleasant smoked malt smell. I can't get enough of this aroma!

T- The taste like the aroma features delicious pale smoked malts with a finish that leaves you craving more.

M- The mouthfeel is light bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

D- This beer is the definition of a session beer for me, very tasty and extremely drinkable.

Served in 12oz pilsner glass. Poured a bright, clear yellow with over an inch of clean white head that quickly dissipated and left just more than slight lacing.

The smokey aroma of this beer is, obviously, the first thing to hit the nose. But underneath that smoke is a pleasant grassiness that shows a solid foundation. The flavors are similar, once you get past the smoke, there is a solid beer here.

The body is light and crisp, it flows nicely across the tongue. The only reason drinkability suffers is that the smoke gets tiresome. I could have 1 a day, but probably not 2. Overall, a very good beer, try it when you get the chance.

On-tap 8/3/09 at Julian's in Providence, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep yellow color, with a large white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of lager yeast, light malts and some hops.

T: The taste is bready up front with flavors of grain and lager yeast. The malt character is hearty but not heavy at all. There's a good hops presence for the style that brings a nice balance. There's a touch of spice in the background. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and very crisp, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is very clean.

D: Tasty, goes down very easily, not filling at all, mild kick, very good representation of style, this is a really nice simple beer that is worth drinking for a long time.

on tap at the Maproom in Chicago. pours a crystal clear golden color with a sizable pillowy white head that has great retention and leaves moderate lacings. the head could be whipped cream and it would not look very different.

aroma is of light breaded malts and a touch of earthy smoke with a light note of lager yeast. overall fresh and pleasant in the nose with a simple profile.

taste follows the nose with a bit more smoke and a nice crisp finish. not much on the palate after the fact. a bit of lager yeast shows up after a bit of warming, and helps to balance the overall character.

mouthfeel is light bodied and a bit dry on the finish with a smooth texture and a light bite from the smoke.

drinkability is good. the smoke is pretty subtle, allowing the munich helles part of the beer to show well, but the smoke ends up a bit too light to be fully appreciated. the overall chracter is quite nice, but ends up a bit less than it could be. still a solid beer on tap.

What a great easy-drinking smoked beer. Clean like a normal Helles with a touch of smoke, so they must be using a relatively small percentage of smoked malt.

Nice white head. Golden, but that smoked malt seems to give it a touch of brown.

Very drinkable. If you like smoke. But it has the drinkability of a Helles and the right amount of smoke only increases its drinkability.

This beer pours a clear bright golden yellow with a thin but substantial white head that leave wispy lacing behind. The nose is dominated by smoke but not quite like a Marzen, slightly more muted but still HIGHLY present, pale malts can be detected in the nose as well. Taste is a surprise as the smokey flavoring is more of an after thought. Taste is heavier on biscuity malts - too biscuity. Smokiness is in the finish. This was a lighter bodied beer, decent carbonation, not filling at all. The taste lessens the drinkability on this beer. I was really disappointed with the overbiscuity, smoked flavor. It wasn't well balanced for me.
