a: poured roughly into a unibroue tulip, creating a frothy, cream-colored head that steadily settles into a thing coating and ring, the beer a coppery golden color

s: rich oak smoke - dominant but delicate - provides an immediate glimpse into what the schlenkerla line is all about, playing fantastically off the sweet, malty doppelbock base - heavy with sweet/toasty german malts; while it carries more malt complexity than the rest of the line, it's still decidedly a smoke-forward beer, and likely won't win over any who don't already enjoy the style; superb balance and a less overpowering smoke than the beechwood, hops appropriately light

m: carbonation light on the palate, medium bodied, smooth

t: a deep base of sugary, lightly nutty german malts backs up strong flavors of oakwood smoke, the doppelbock base is the perfect match to balance out the complex, pure smoke, brief flash of metallic hops towards the finish, great

A: [3.50] Mid to light amber color. Produced a nice 1 1/2 finger head. The head was creamy and tight. The head dissipated pretty quickly. The bottle had a bit of sediment - but I think that is expected for the style. Beer is listed at 8% ABV. No dating on the bottle.

S: [3.75] Smoke. More specifically bacon. There is a distinct charred hardwood (like what bacon is cured over). Maybe some other hints of sweetness and caramel underneath.

T: [4.25] The taste follows the nose - but it is reversed. I get caramel and malty sweetness up front and then the smoked wood on the finish. There are no hops (or none that I can taste). I get no sense of the 8% alcohol - it is well hidden.

M: [4.50] Nice mouthfeel. Nothing cloying or drying at all.

O: [4.00] I have had one other smoked beer, from Germany, and it was over the top. This one is nicely balanced with more malt character. I really enjoyed this one. Very crisp and refreshing. No sense of alcohol burn, no drying or bittering. I think you could session a few of these.

Great to see this bottled offering here in Greensboro.Poured into a 1/2 liter stein a clear bronze with a fluffy white head,the lightest doppelbock beer I have ever saw but its clarity is nice.smoked summer sausage really sticks out to me in the nose along with a bit of iron.Smoked meat flavors abound,I mean it tastes like my moms summer sausage from back in the day,the oak makes this beer different than the others Schlenkerla beers.It tastes like oak fired pork,its an aquired taste,I used to cringe at this style of beer,now I search out this style,not for the faint of heart.

It pours a light orangish/red with a small head that dissipated quickly. I took a sniff and there was a smell of smoked malts which almost smelled of a smoked gouda cheese. The taste was quite complex, there was a taste of the smokiness like a smoked cheese/oaky flavor. That was then surpassed with a sweeter aftertaste of fruits and brown sugar finish. The mouthfeel is a a full body and heavy beer like most rauchbeirs. There is light carbonation. There is also a slight hint of alcohol, but it does weigh in at 8% abv. Overall, this rauchbeir is probably at the top of my list of rauchbeirs. I can only drink one or 2 of these bottles and then feel full. If you are into Rauchbeirs get this around christmas or whenever you can find this one!

Pours a deep amber color around the edges with a noticeably darker, copper center. Mostly murky and hazy with only slight transparency in the outer-amber crust. The cap is a weird shade of beige, possibly with some grey tint to it; decent retention and mild lacing left near the very top of the glass. Plenty of carbonation bubbles stream to the top of the beer - this one started slowly bubbling over after popping the cap.

As expected, a deep blanket of smokey goodness cleanses my nostrils the second I begin to bring the beer to my face. The smoke is deep and robust with a soft, underlying sweetness. It's got the "meaty" vibe going just a bit, hinting at smoked sausage or bacon. However the smoke seems a little sweeter in this as compared to the marzen and urbock. The malts seem to be heavier as they inject a caramel and toffee-like sweetness to the mix. In this sense, the smoke isn't quite as "forward" as some of the other Schlenkerla beers, rather it's more entwined. Strong notes of oak come out halfway through as well, and get even more forward upon the warming of the beer.

After my first sip, I'm surprised to find that the smoke flavor is much lighter on the palate than the nose would lead you to think. It's definitely still a huge contributing factor to the flavor, though; liquid smoke, soft sweetness, lightly burnt campfire wood, oak. The smoke flavors show unexpected complexity, actually. Equal in power, however, are the malts; caramely sweet, lightly sticky like toffee, and granting a substantial plum-like fruitness on the very tail end. Also in the finish is big-time bread and a lightly fading, sweet smoke and burnt wood flavor. Alcohol undetectable at first but provides some warmth halfway through the brew. Medium bodied, lightly sticky mouth feel with lots of carbonation.

Pretty damn good - if I had to choose, I'd say I like this better than the Marzen but not quite as much as the Urbock. The smoke flavors are a little more balanced in the way that the malt character seems to be much more "loaded up" in this one. The oak makes a very solid contribution to the flavor as well. Very enjoyable to drink - Heller-Trum is quickly becoming one of my favorite overseas breweries.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass, this beer is a beautiful, dark amber with a light tan head that rapidly dissipates and leaves no noticeable lacing.
The aroma is quite remarkable: Sweet malt and biscuit and baking bread and that underlying smoked char. Lovely.
Amazing taste this beer. I keep thinking it's a liquid Pixies song; instead of soft-loud-soft, it's bitter-sweet-bitter. Lots of bitter, dark fruit and spice right off, then sweet caramel and toffee and then a spicy and dry bitter. And beneath it all, that wonderful lingering oak char with hints of vanilla thrown in.
Moutfeel is medium-thin and a bit sticky.
Overall, this is just a great beer.

16.9 oz bottle. Pours clear copper orange with a small frothy off white head that goes to a thin film and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is nice sweet caramelly smoke (campfire and BBQ), but quickly gets subdued.

The flavor is some sweet caramel malt and bitter smoke in the finish. The mouthfeel is a bit thin.

Overall, I probably liked this one the best of the 3 I had. It was pretty one-sided but had no off-notes I found in the others (marzen and urbock).

Poured into 25cl tulip
Mahogany colored with minimal, yellowish-tan head. Smells of oak smoke, ash-pit, pine, strong aroma fills the nose, pungent smell which permiates the nose wuickly. Tast is similar to smell, yet even more smokier, tastes like a beef jerkey stick. Malt undertones and with some toasted hints, and a hint of dry Carmel flavor, not sweet at all. Mouthfeel is lighter than expected, very drinkable, smooth texture and light-medium body is memorable, since I would expect much more heaviness in texture with beer of this many layers. Would pair awesome with sausage, salmon, cream-cheese, dill, herbs, mustard, smoked trout.

Had on tap at Julian's Providence

Appearance: 1/4 inch head, clear, black in color

Smell: smells like smoked oak wood

Taste: alcohol, rum, smoked oak, and a bit of dark fruit

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, semi-sweet, boozy, medium/low carbonation

Drinkability: This is right up there with my favorite beers of all time. Just an amazing brew. The smoke is there but not overpowering. It sneaks in very subtly. The oak is also there but not too strong. Perfectly balanced. I would love to see this be a regular offering.

Wood smoked malt dominates the nose.
Pours deep ruby tinted amber with a rich 2" off-white persistent head.
The big smoky caramelly malty rich palate reminds me of wood roast pork chops or fall off the bone smoked pork shoulder. It is very rich and wonderful but it is very hard to drink more than one at a sitting.
Creamy smooth, a little oily, medium full body, medium low carbonation.
A unique classic.

16oz bottle poured into a snifter.

Pours a deep ruby brown color. A retentive 1/4 in layer of off white head. Mild lacing from a swirl is quick to fall back into the beer.

Big smoked meat aroma. Very nice. Some sweet bready malt struggles to be noticed through all the smoke.

Again, intense smokiness, smoked meats, seems slightly oaky with a slightly smoother overall character than their other beers. A nice dark bready sweet malt rounds things out and reminds you of the dopplebock base.

Medium in body, good carb. Feels as the style should.

A very nice smoke beer, among the best. Keeps me coming back to the classic of classics when it comes to this style. As with their other beers, a nice balance of smoke to malt.

Someone else has said this is like a bbq in a bottle . . . And it is. But I like it. Smokey with a capital S ! I think this would go great with some wings.

Poured golden copper color, slight haze, quarter inch white head - good retention and lacing. Smells like a good country ham. Taste is smoky up front, with a nice sweet malt backbone. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, pretty creamy. Quite a tasty beer, the combo of the smoke and the sweet is just fantastic.

Pours a lighter-than-expected amber-brown color with a one-finger cream-colored head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth and slightly bready caramel malts with solid amounts of smoked malts. Also present are very small amounts of toastiness.

Tastes similar to how it smells, though note quite as well-defined. Moderately sweet caramel malt flavors with hints of toastiness kick things off. Joining in shortly thereafter are solid amounts of smoked malt flavors - equal parts leather and smoked meat, better balanced than most others produced by this brewery. The smokiness carries through to a moderately bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I had no problems finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this isn't my favorite smoked beer made by Schlenkerla but you could make the argument that it's the smoothest and best-balanced. Worth a shot.

A- This beer pours a crystal clear aged copper color with a creamy and bubbly off-white head that last as a thin film of stick foam. There is a gentle carbonation of micro bubbles.

S- The fragrant meaty smoke has a light band-aid aroma and a woody finish.

T- The woody smoke notes are followed by a biting green hops that are Noble in quality. The finish is crisp and dry with a bitter smoke flavor that lingers.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel and a crisp carbonation with no alcohol heat noticed.

D- I love all their other beers but this beer has bitterness and over the top smoke dominating the flavor making it almost undrinkable. There needs to be some other support, at least a bit, and the woody band-aid notes mixed with the bitter green finish just hang on the tongue.

Not quite brown but very close, this one is more of a darkly rusted red. It grows an off-white head that, when the sparse bubbling and the denser foam come together, rises to about one finger. It never completely fades, but lacing is spotty and light.
The aroma is a delight, all the smokiness with the rich, woody tone and meatiness I hope for without the effect of completely diminishing the beer's recogniazability as a doppelbock. There's a nice dry bread/crust element as well as the malts play out fully. Underneath, while certainly not a forward note and perhaps most subtle in the interplay of the complexity, is a bit of dark fruits.
Smoky in the flavor as well, a bit of the subtlety and complexity is dropped for the strength of the primary notes. There's quite a peppery nip to it from start to finish. The flavor also offers a little more of a tangy note than the aroma did. It's recognizable as a doppel, with light touches of molasses and black licorice barely perceptible but not buried. A little bit of baker's chocolate is noted though there's very little bitterness here.
I was a little surprised by the lightness of the feel, though it manages about a medium body, considering both its style and the robustness of its overall character. Crispness is on an even keel with smoothness, if not more, though it's not overdone.

Light brown color, unexpectedly light compared to most Doppelbocks. Smells like delicious oak smoke, and not much else. Tastes like a freshly scorched 2x4.

I'm enjoying this one to a certain extent, but I"m not entirely sure that if the smoke were gone, I'd still enjoy the beer underneath it. If it's smoke you really like, or if you're just in the mood for something different, this might be the one for you.

500ml bottle. Made with smoked oak, rather than smoked beechwood - hmmmm, I wonder if Anheuser Busch has tried that out?

This beer pours a hazy, medium copper amber hue, with two beefy (the aroma is already infiltrating my consciousness) fingers of puffy, tightly foamy, and almost caked dirty white head, which leaves a few swaths of paint splatter lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of woodsmoke-infused dried meat, semi-sweet caramel malt, a twinge of hard toffee, wet brown toast, campfire-melted funky cheese, scorched rubber-like phenols, twisted vanilla, and faint earthy, singed leafy hops. The taste is actually less smoky than I was expecting (lots of room to move in that particular direction), with the same glowing log effluent character moved to the, ahem, near back burner, allowing a strongly caramelized malt to arise, with a touch of biscuity toffee, dark, reduced orchard fruit, edgy warming alcohol, and some still stunned weedy, leafy hops.

The bubbles are fairly prominent, a bit surprisingly, the swirling frothiness doing well to distribute the flavours, the body a solid medium-full weight, and nicely smooth, once you sublimate all that lurking smoky acridity, which is apparently not all that hard of a thing to do. It finishes on the sweet side, the complex and complicated smoke starting to blow off, leaving us with but a boozy, caramel-heavy, and bready maltiness.

A pretty deft application of the rauchbier treatment to a big doppelbock, the German version of overt style blending, I guess. Everything comes off well enough, the smoke having its way with my palate, before ceding the floor to the equally sturdy, strong like bull, base lager. Once again, a tad scary at first contact, but by the end, it's got me wondering about the times when all beer tasted at least a bit like this.

A - A deep red beer with a light beige lacing.

S - A strong smell of burned and smoked oak wood.

T - This is like drinking an astray with a smoked ham added. There is however a undertone of a very nice Doppelbock which is a bit sweet. Unfortunately I am sure that by the time my glass is finished I will end up with a huge headache.

M - A medium carbonation with no bitterness or any alcohol heat.

O - Now I found a beer that is even worse than a sour one. This is not my kind of thing. I stopped smoking 8,5 years ago and this beer tastes like I have started again. This beer still get some points for the Doppelbock undertone which is is undoubtedly nice and wonderful.

Remarkably smooth easy-drinking smoked. The smoke is there but its understated under a delicious malt mix. Its on my lips well after I have completed it. It was great with BBQ. Greyish golden coloured body, small head. Mild smoke aromas. A tad above average mouthfeel.

Clear dark orange body with faint amber highlights. Small off-white head with excellent lacing.

Smoke (obviously), roast malt, faint tobacco, and a light floral note in the nose.

Fruity undercurrent to the smoke along with a solid clean malt bill. Sweet, and delicately spicy mid-palate. Medium-dry finish.

Not quite medium-bodied. Mildly astringent.

The most balanced beer I've had thus far from this brewery...

Pours a pleasant caramel-amber, with limited carbonation and sketchy, minimal lace.

Nose is where this experience all begins...spectacular aroma of smoked, cured meat. It's like I can almost sense the salt, even. Definitely some wood in there, too. Impressive, and daunting!

Taste is definitely heavy. I get lots of wood (hahah), smoky meat, and a nicely warming, dry finish (this one is 8%, after all). I get more wood here (no doubt the malts aged over smoked oak adds to this heaviness more than the regular Schlenkerla's beechwood-smoked malts). Absolutely a pinnacle of rauchbier goodness, this Schlenkerla is tough to find (at least in my area), but well worth the experience.

Could this really be a new Schlenkerla? I only remember ever seeing 3 varieties of their rauchbier -- and this one claims to be a doppelbock as well? Very exciting -- 16.9 oz bottle. As soon as I crack it the smell is unmistakably smoke, just like smoked gouda. Flavor is dead on as well. Slightly sweet, not too bitter. The way the beer falls into the glass it looks over carbonated (big bubbles, no head) but in the mouth it's just right. Very smooth -- the smoke flavor is not at all tiring or abrasive, and while it does have some lagery qualities, I never would have guessed this is a doppelbock or the associated alcohol content. Alas the beer doesn't have much else going for it, and maybe it's a little gimmicky. But what there is is amazing.

Appearance: Caramel syrup with fiery carbonation. Incredible lacing. Really one of the best I have ever seen.

Smell: Salt and pepper covering notes of peat and scotch. I would like a bit more punch.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Tastes like a cigar...there's that much smoke. Hints of bacon/pork fat...ok...more than hints...more like obvious overtones. The smoke really makes this worth it. Crisp/active feeling, but a tad flat in the finish, most likely due to the overwhelming heavy body.

Overall: I could possibly justify calling this my favorite beer ever.
