Appearance: Caramel syrup with fiery carbonation. Incredible lacing. Really one of the best I have ever seen.

Smell: Salt and pepper covering notes of peat and scotch. I would like a bit more punch.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Tastes like a cigar...there's that much smoke. Hints of bacon/pork fat...ok...more than hints...more like obvious overtones. The smoke really makes this worth it. Crisp/active feeling, but a tad flat in the finish, most likely due to the overwhelming heavy body.

Overall: I could possibly justify calling this my favorite beer ever.

Brauerei Heller-Trum have really gone out of their way to make Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche Doppelbock, brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot or "German Beer Purity Law" with 100% oak smoke and matured in vats deep underground during weihnachtszeit or the yuletide season, perfect. Now I will judge it. Taste buds have been activated and are set for launch.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a Chimay chalice.

A: Friendly yeast particles float around in this cloudy copper bodied brew with a minimal cream lace ring on top.

S: Not nearly as smoky as their Urbock, with notes of oak-charred vanilla, sweet caramel, plum, bread yeast and all-spice. It certainly hits that Christmas spot [you know that spot on your body between the elbow and the... argh, forget it].

T: Smooth, so smooth, makes that Urbock seem like a brash young whipper-snapper! The profile is as expected vanilla, sweet caramel, plum, bread yeast and all-spice. There is a mellowness to the smoke that belies the ABV and makes you sit back and ponder things like doing your tax return with each sip. Then you slip back into reality and realise that you hate doing your tax returns, then you take another sip... ahhh, tax returns. It is a subtle mistress this Doppelbock.

M: Here is where it under-performs its Urbock cousin/brother/sister/relative-in-law; medium bodied with a watery light carbonation (lacking in body).

D: Craftier than its Urbock sibling with a tastier, less aggressive smoke and hardly a hint of booze, this is one Brauerei Heller-Trum Aecht Schlenkerla brew that really slides under the radar and would make you blind without you knowing it if you should be foolish enough to drink more than a few. Ultimately though I have really gravitated more towards more fulsome brews and the Urbock, despite being lighter in ABV and bolder in smoke, wins my affections.

Food match: Triamisu [if you haven't figured this out by now I am totally making this shit up].

Pours a slightly hazy copper with a foamy cream head that dissipates fairly quickly to almost nothing.

Smoke and meaty goodness comes to the forefront of the aroma. There's a slightly sweet underlying malt character that accompanies the phenolic smoke.

Flavor reveals a sweet melanoidin and toasted malt backbone, which is nicely contrasted by the smoke that kicks in most palate. The finish is lightly dry and floral. Herbal hop notes lend a tea-like impression.

Body is moderate, with carbonation on the lower side. Alcohol warmth is subtle.

Smoke is far more prevalent in the aroma than the flavor, which is actually fairly balanced. Would be a little sweet for a doppelbock, but the smoky notes prevent that from being noticed.

500ml bottle. Made with smoked oak, rather than smoked beechwood - hmmmm, I wonder if Anheuser Busch has tried that out?

This beer pours a hazy, medium copper amber hue, with two beefy (the aroma is already infiltrating my consciousness) fingers of puffy, tightly foamy, and almost caked dirty white head, which leaves a few swaths of paint splatter lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of woodsmoke-infused dried meat, semi-sweet caramel malt, a twinge of hard toffee, wet brown toast, campfire-melted funky cheese, scorched rubber-like phenols, twisted vanilla, and faint earthy, singed leafy hops. The taste is actually less smoky than I was expecting (lots of room to move in that particular direction), with the same glowing log effluent character moved to the, ahem, near back burner, allowing a strongly caramelized malt to arise, with a touch of biscuity toffee, dark, reduced orchard fruit, edgy warming alcohol, and some still stunned weedy, leafy hops.

The bubbles are fairly prominent, a bit surprisingly, the swirling frothiness doing well to distribute the flavours, the body a solid medium-full weight, and nicely smooth, once you sublimate all that lurking smoky acridity, which is apparently not all that hard of a thing to do. It finishes on the sweet side, the complex and complicated smoke starting to blow off, leaving us with but a boozy, caramel-heavy, and bready maltiness.

A pretty deft application of the rauchbier treatment to a big doppelbock, the German version of overt style blending, I guess. Everything comes off well enough, the smoke having its way with my palate, before ceding the floor to the equally sturdy, strong like bull, base lager. Once again, a tad scary at first contact, but by the end, it's got me wondering about the times when all beer tasted at least a bit like this.

Another excellent addition to the Schlenkerla lineup. Sweet malt accented with the deep smoked malts, reminiscent of smoked meats. Copper body with small creamy head, fine carbonation and lots of suspended particulates. Aroma of wood smoke (from a fire), taste comes in with sweet malt and smoked meats. Abrupt finish with some lingering smokiness. Rauchbiers are an acquired taste, but this is a fine example.

From the 550 ml. bottle. Sampled on May 26, 2014.

The pour is medium amber with a big head and a slight haze. But generally brown.

Check out that smoked cheese aroma! That's the main thing I get along with the caramel malts but limited hops.

Medium or so body but it feels fuller than that.

The taste is alive with smoked cheese and smoked goodness. Caramel malts and mild hops seem secondary. I love beers with a good smoked quality and this one really does the trick. I could have it multiple times.

Bought a single at Local 44's bottle shop this past Wednesday. Poured into large tulip for review.

Looks clear copperish amber with nice fluffy white head that persists. Carbonation seems good.

Has that classic smoke beer aroma. Smoky phenols that reminds me of sitting around a campfire. Noble hops and a bit of toast. High level of smoke in relation to standard Doppelbock makeup.

Tastes of oak smoke which gives way to classic bacon-like flavors. Or a glazed ham. Really well done and one of a kind. Tastes medium with a touch of malt sweetness with balanced bitterness. Hop flavors low to none.

World class smoke beer. Well brewed and nicely done. Would definitely drink again as I'm a big fan of this style.
