Bottle from Whole Foods Bowery. The bbq binge continues. Anyone else add liquid smoke to their Cheerios? :D

Orange/amber, mostly clear, with a tiny amount of noticeable sediment floating about. Good couple inches of cream-colored lather-ish foam.

Smells of pepper & grease, with a backend of oats, bread crust, & bitter greens. I picked up a little bit of awkward acidity.

Peppery pastrami(not hammy), buttery oak, gentle grain sweetness, mild herbal/rind bitterness at the end. Gets pretty sweet as it warms.

Strong carbonation, thicker then a standard amber, buttery mouthfeel. Frothy.

Not as good as their standard lineup I felt, but still a pretty good "meaty" smoke.

A: a dull amber with a large fluffy white head. retention is decent. not entirely clear as i am able to see some particulate matter.

S: the oak hits hard on this one. rich bacon fat. like the skillet left over after morning breakfast. cannot find any hop aroma in this one and am assuming any german varietals that were used add to the earthy smoke aroma.

T: the oak comes through on the palate like a rauchbier. rich and lively. more like eating a brisket than drinking a beer. very smooth. a bit of alcohol warmth at the tail end. a bit of sweetness in the finish, but not a lot.

M: significant carbonation on a very full smokey body.

D: being a sucker for rauchbiers, i am loving this. a beefed up doppel-version of a smoked lager. just so much aroma/flavor from the smoke makes this very enjoyable. maybe not the best beer to start your palate with, but a great beer overall.

A: Pours a nice creamy off white head.

S: Smokey with the smell of a newly opened band-aid.

T: To me, the smoke flavoring was overpowering. Get yourself ready for a liquid smoke type experience. The band-aid smell also carried over into the taste. This is definitely not my style of beer.

M: This beer does have body to it...

O: This was a tough beer for me to drink. I could not finish a full beer as it was like drinking a burnt piece of oak. If this is your style, then I'd think you'd be happy.

As with anything from Schlenkerla, this is akin to drinking a burning log. However, it's not as smoky as other beer from this brewery: the urbock is zillions of times smokier and, for that matter, hammier. Nonetheless, this one has plenty of smoke. There's no ham, however, so I guess that makes it... kosher? Quite tasty and rather low-key for a dopplebock: it doesn't have the boozy, malty smack that most others in this style have. That's a plus in my book, because it's that overtly alcoholic tinge that steers me away from most dopplebocks. If you're a fan of Schlenkerla, you must try this. But if you like your dopplebocks sweet and powerful, you are not worthy.

Normally I don't care much for smoked beers, although I have been starting to warm up to them lately. This was, hands down, the best smoked beer I've ever tried.

The nose was very strong, however, the oak-smoke character of this aroma was less like the typical, stale, wet campfire aroma I typically find. Instead, it was cleaner, sharper and perhaps fresher.

On the palate, the smoke flavor was much more subdued, which is good. The smoke flavor, while milder than the aroma, did stick on my tongue and tended to build sip after sip.

I was also impressed with the color and clarity. A bright bronze/brown color, with no cloudiness, I could see all the way through it.

Summary: This is a fantastic smoked dopplebock that is almost sessionable.

Last of my doppelbock/dunkel buying spree at the Hudson Heinens.

Live review from .5L bottle. Poured into my Troegenator stein.

I normally do not find myself drawn to smoked beers. They often can be overpowering to the point of conjuring thoughts of ugly smoked meat and provide an unpleasant sweet acidity (for me, at least). This beer, not surprisingly, was better than the norm for me. My first Aecht Schlenkerla offering, I was expecting something of the highest order of tradition and quality.

The beer lacked the awesome head that most doppelbocks boast, instead I only was able to coax a half finger of white head with little retention or lace. The color was not typical of most doppelbocks either. A light, clear amber color. This looks more like a Bock and a double... visible carbonation bubbles rise to the surface.

The smell was at first overwhelmingly smokey. But as I adjusted I was immediatly reminded of sitting around a campfire. The smoke is clean and woody, very earthy, with hints of wet ash.

This brew tastes smokey indeed, but the smoke flavor isn't nearly as strong as the aroma would make you think. None of the acidity I dislike in many smoked beers. Though light notes of cured bacon mingle with the campfire and ashy smoke flavors.

The base beer is crsip and clean, with amber malt flavors and subtle grassy European hops (hallertau according to the bottle). Long into the finish there's a charcoal dryness.

Overall I was impressed with this a smoked beer, though nonplused about the assertion that this is a doppelbock. I like my doppelbocks dark, chewy, and sweet and bready. Nevertheless, definitely a beer worth trying, and cheap at $2.99 for the bottle.

A premium example of a smoky, satisfying, malty German doppelbock. Excellent in nearly every respect. Rich strong smoked malts dominated the aroma and were substantially comnplemented on the palate. A must-try for anyone a fan of the style. Highly recommended... Great stuff...

A- This beer pours a crystal clear aged copper color with a creamy and bubbly off-white head that last as a thin film of stick foam. There is a gentle carbonation of micro bubbles.

S- The fragrant meaty smoke has a light band-aid aroma and a woody finish.

T- The woody smoke notes are followed by a biting green hops that are Noble in quality. The finish is crisp and dry with a bitter smoke flavor that lingers.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel and a crisp carbonation with no alcohol heat noticed.

D- I love all their other beers but this beer has bitterness and over the top smoke dominating the flavor making it almost undrinkable. There needs to be some other support, at least a bit, and the woody band-aid notes mixed with the bitter green finish just hang on the tongue.

I had out of a 25 ounce bottle.
A- Very strong streams of small bubbles coming up the side that lead to a full, creamy head that leaves a good deal of lace behind. Amber in color. A bit hazy.
S- Nice smokey scent with a fruity undertone.
T- That Schlenkerla smokiness certainly comes through. This is lovely. Smooth with an oak taste. There is a mild sweetness underneath, perhaps a caramel taste. Perfectly balanced. Some bitterness.

The smoke has done evidently nothing to sully this beer's appearance nor to cloud its complexion; this cheerfully bright and exceedingly transparent amber coloured beer looks, frankly, perfectly standard. Minus, that is, the fact that it has no head.

Growing up with a Polish grandmother, I feel as though I've smelled Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche many times before in the smoked sausage and cabbage dish she makes every Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Others may be more familiar with German sauerkraut, same difference really. Indeed, unlike other Schlenkerla beers, Eiche has a sharp and unmistakable cabbage smell that supplants the smoked pork and kiełbasa aromas.

I expected Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche to be one of the most distinctive beers I've ever tried - and, yes, there is a definite case to be made - however it doesn't taste as unusual as I anticipated. The tastes of Polish cabbage rolls and mashed turnips still prevail, as does a lingering, succulent smoked pork flavour, and while it's difficult to make out the dark fruits and melanoidins, there is an unexpected amount of sweet maltiness present too.

Eiche may actually be less (or at least no more) 'smoky' than a few of this brewery's other offerings; to be sure, however, it is still unmitigatedly smoky, sufficiently so to overwhelm most inexperienced palates. There's enough to impress on the palate the texture of fleshy, fatty meat (kiełbasa, pulled pork) as well as the hearty character of winter root vegetables (cabbage, turnip). It finishes, however, on a distinctly malty sweetness.

The bock itself, although thoroughly enshrouded in the smoke, becomes more noticeable with warmth, impressing crunchy malts (shelled in toasty melanoidins), a rich caramel malt flavour with very restrained sweetness and an overarching Noble-hop pungency. For a beer with such strong qualities (and 8% alcohol) this is way too refreshing.

What I've yet to touch on is the impression of the smoke itself, which isn't at all harsh or roasty - like someone just held the beer over a campfire or BBQ - but rather has an exceptionally pure and clean oak wood aroma and flavour. The smoke (of course) ensures a boldly defined character, but it does so through a gentle kind of nuance.

Don't forget to stamp your passport! Finishing the bottle, you genuinely have the sensation of having experienced something unique and distinctly rooted in a certain landscape and history. I've had some wonderful smoked beers but none honestly capture the distinct character of Schlenkerla rauchbiers, especially not this offering. Buy a bottle, drink up, prepare yourself for one of the most distinctive beers you're bound to try.

Pours a perfectly clear amber with a thin white head, that leaves some nice tight lacing, and a hailstorm of bubbles that never cease to end!

Smells like smoked bacon, and malt. When I say those two things, I mean it in the best way possible...my German ancestors are screaming for me to drink it at this point! HAHAH

WOW!!! Perfect malt profile for a dopplebock without the roast, which is replaced by a smooth, lingering smokiness, and then a semi sweet finish. 8%!??! WHERE?!?!?!

Mouthfeel is very nice and comforting...not too much not too little, very well balance.d

I'd say this is my favorite dopplebock as of right now....there, I said it...

This is very good, but I must say that I was a little disappointed with this compared to their smoked Marzen and Ur-Bock, both of which are phenomenal.

Amber-pale copper, med. Pale tan head steadily shrinks to foamy ring, a little lace.

Aroma is campfire smoke, caramelized grain, bread crust.

Taste is wood smoke, caramelized sweet bread crust up front, hint of spicy-raisiny fruitiness, lingering spicy smokiness just dominates finish & lingers. It’s pretty good, but a bit one-dimensional and slightly sharp.

A beautiful color of molten copper with a bit of an orange hue. Pretty still with a slight smoggy effect. A half inch white head thin and whispy goes fades into a foamy cap.

Love this brewery and the uniqueness of there malt. Meaty, smokey, bready malts. Light brown sugar and carmel aromas. Only a twinge of oak at the finish. Oh so lovely.

Again love this brewery. This is much more drinkable and palatable than their regual run. Don't know if it's the oak aging making the overall smokiness more rounded and laid back or if it's just this beer but whatever it is its damn tasty. Burnt caramel, oak, charred woods, smoked meats, brown sugar, some dried fig on the very finish. Creamy nice mouth with a medium sweet finish that than ends dryly. Quite good.

I know that I am Biased, I LOVE smoked Beer! Schlenkerla Urbock is one of my favorite all time beers, so i was excited to try this one. Pours a dark but translucent brown with a medium head. Lots of Wood, some meaty goodness and tons of smoke in the nose, I love the way these beers smell and this was no exception. Tasted of wood and smoke as well as bacon but not as intense as the smell. a slight sweetness marries with the smoke perfectly and goes beautifully with food (smoked German Sausage in this lucky mans case!) Smooth and rich on the palate but also light and fluffy as it does not leave any intense flavors in the mouth. Over all a great beer that I will have again but may not love as much as the Urbock.

Poured in a Dogfish Head sniffer. 

A: Amber-colored and effervescent. Pillowy white head that slowly dies, leaving scattered lacing. 

S: Smoked pork, bacon, and campfire. A hint of sweet malt. 

T: Above smoke characteristics spread across palate. Very strong initially but its potency loosens a bit and then sweet caramel, grain and a bit of hoppy bitterness present themselves. 

M: Medium-bodied and appropriate medium-level carbonation. Not particularly warming.

D: A very attractive and balanced smoke beer. It tastes completely natural and has a sort of rustic charm that I find quite appealing.

Reviewed 2/5/2011. 500 mL bottle poured into a tulip.

Pours a nice cherry-mahogany color with gold highlights, topped by a smallish off-white head.

Nose is intriguing. The smoke is clear, but less strong and upfront as I remember from the other Schlenkerla beers. Meaty (bacon, ham), but more rounded. Smoke is smoke, but I think I can distinguish the oak wood specifically. Underneath clearly lies a rich malty beer: notes of dark fruit, candied nuts, toasted bread, earthy caramel, maybe a hint of cocoa.

On the palate this is certainly a doppelbock accented by oak and smoke, rather than a smoke beer with underlying doppelbock notes. Rich and malty and smooth, with just enough smoke to prevent it from being heavy and cloying. As a less-than-enthusiastic doppelbock drinker, I'm happy with this. Oak flavor comes through, but less strongly than in an oak-aged beer; more wood and less vanilla and caramel, etc. A good bit of dark fruit on the finish.

Quite full bodied, but not heavy. Nice rounded mouthfeel, but mostly firm. A nice change of pace.

A - Poured a hazy copper color with an off white head that leaves some lacing behind

S - Like all Schlenkerla beers its a nose full of smoked malt but this one has some burnt oak to it with some sweetness

T - I love it this is like drinking a candied oak campfire the smoke comes out first then the sweetness comes through for a bit but the burnt oak comes back to finish everything off

M - This beer has a medium body with medium carbonation to it

O - I think its pretty easy to see where I stand with this beer and like all Schlenkerla beers I love it even though the abv is a bit higher than the rest of the line up I can't help but to keep on getting sips of this stuff if you like smoked beers this is a beer that you should hunt down to try

Poured into a Duvel Snifter:

A: Pours a very light brown, with minimal carbonation.

S: A smoked ham scent is very noticeable. Sweet malts.

T: Oak Smoke and smoked ham with a sweet malty finish.

M/D: Could have used a bit more carbonation. Overall it was very good, but needed just a little more bite to the mouthfeel.

A - Nice crisp bronze color with a medium sized, thickish, fluffy, foamy, white head. Decent retention leaving a thin foamy lace.

S - Really nice aroma with the obvious smoked meat aroma. The oak provides a nice level to the aroma. There is a nice caramel/sweet malt aroma that in other beers can be overpowered by the smoked aroma. A very subtle raisin like aroma as well.

T - Like the nose, there is a lot of smoked meat flavor, but not much of a bonfire smokiness. Oak flavor is definitely present, though not dominating. Caramel malt and a subtle dark fruit flavor as well as a very faint hoppy bitterness show up. Pretty complex.

M - Medium body with average carbonation. Quite smooth.

D - Like other smoked beers I've had, this is a one and done for a while, but the complexity is quite nice.

Notes: Interesting, complex smoked beer. Smoked meat is the strongest, but this more than other similar beers provides more balance and complexity to the flavor. Has subtle/vague doppelbock hints as well as oak.

Pours a clearish dark gold/tan color with decent carbonation and head. Aroma is smokey and meaty, not much else. I like this beer and it is a very enjoyable after dinner sipper for me and it is a sipper - chug this only if you want to be ill. Just slightly disappointed only in that while a medium body and I can pick out some sweet malt tastes and a touch of hoppy bitterness, this is mostly a smoke beer. Nothing wrong with that - just that this is not close to a 50/50 balance of rauch/dopple...the smokiness is clearly more dominant. If you love smoke beers with a touch of lingering sweetness then this is yours, but beware if you think you're getting a slightly smoked dopplebock. Perhaps my hope for the latter leads to my review being less than a solid A-, as I like smoke beers and in that case this is another top notch Aecht brew. That being said, a sturdy, fuller-bodied beer that is exceptionally smooth thanks to oak and has a touch of woodiness in it. Smooths as it warms and the longer you sip on it your tongue adjusts to dry smokiness and caramel, toffee, sticky malts and some minor hop flavors come through behind smoke.

I really enjoy smoked beer, and this one was no exception. The beer is a clear, light chestnut color with a modest white head. The aroma is what catches you first. It's a great mix of wood smoke and rich malt. the smoke is intense, something between a smoked ham and a smoldering campfire. The malt is folded in behind the smoke, but still quite prominent. As for the taste, it's a sweet, malty, dopplebock for sure. The smoke comes forth in the taste as a remarkable spiciness. Firm body, and very drinkable. I really enjoyed this beer.

Apperance - Clean and clear copper/amber color, carbonation is good
Nose - Very smokey sweet sensation, almost a hickory kick
Taste - Very dark, almost peated malt taste despite the color variable. Sweet malts are there, almost a dark liquorish bite. Earthy mushrooms and dark truffle tastes come through as well.
Mouthfeel - Very smooth almost syrupy but in the best way possible, carbonation compliments well.
Aftertaste - Smokyness lingers long, with the sweet dark fruits of plum and raisens.
Overall - While this is not my favorite style of beer, it is the work of craftsman brewers. Both smoke and dopple bock beers are very difficult beers to brew, and this is a great combination of the two.

Stopped into the Georgetown Deli (Wilkes-Barre) on 19MAR11 for lunch before heading to Hershey. Scooped up a bottle of Eiche ($6.99) for later enjoyment. Later is now!

I released the contents of the 0.5l bottle into an imperial pint glass. Color was amuted, slightly hazy orange/copper. Carbo was sparse, and the head had a few wisps of white foam, but didn't cover the liquid much. Aroma is pure smoke, a common trait among Schlenkerla products! Personally, I love it! I'm a big fan of Schlenkerla biers, so bring the Rauch! I found the body to be a touch bigger than medium, and it was smooth and easy over the tongue.

Slight sweetness coats the palate, while some caramel, hints of toffee, and lots of and smoke attack the tastebuds. There is a definite, albeit subtle, tinge of oakiness here, though the smoke easily beats the oak. There is some florality here, too, but you have to look for it. This is quite tasty, if you like the style. I could sit in the Heller Schwemme all night and quaff this stuff!

A - pours a good amber color, with a decent white head

S - Smoke, bacon and malt. Smells wonderful after the head

T - Mostly smoke, which can also be called bacon taste. Best taste ever!

M- Does not coat the mouth too much, which is a good thing. Taste lingers on the back of the tongue. Delicious

O - Aecht doesn't disappoint, and this is not an overwhelming beer. The right amount of smoke and malt makes for a drinkable, wonderful beer

Poured in to a pint glass

A: This beer pours a beautiful clear copper, amberish color with a one finger of offwhite head. Head recedes somewhat quickly without leaving any lacing.

S: Nose is - wow at first whiff, smells like Memorial Day weekend at the Quabbin Resevoir. Ahhh my youth. After the beer warms, sweet malts begin to come through with mild cedar chips.

T: Taste starts with light cedar chip flavoring before a heavier smoke and oak flavoring comes through. The finish is where a ton of caramel and toffee sweetness and alcohol come through and hangs on the palate.

M: Medium body, low carbonation, light clean feel with an extremely oily, sticky finish.

O: Goes down easily at first, tasty, not too filling, well hidden kick and a bit off for a Dopplebock...it's more of a smoked dopplebock. At first the smokiness is fantastic but as the beer warms, the sweetness and minor alcohol notes come in and hang. A little too sweet to have more of a pint of, but a decent beer none-the-less.
