I never mention bitterness in my reviews, my bitterness taste buds are ridiculously under-
APPEARANCE : Deep dark mahogany with a slightly mocha head that rises to a fair height on pour and drops down to a relatively above-average stable height. The foam looks thick and pretty sturdy - looks which are confirmed by the very fine amount of lacing left behind.
SMELL : First nose is rich malt and rich smoke on a pretty 50-50 equilibrium. No real hop presence at this point. Second nose follows through but adds in a definite floral element - so there's our hops popping up. Very smooth and aromatic - most definitely a noble varietal, as can be expected from a German beer. Third nose has yet more flowery hops coming out and the clearly lager origin of the beer becomes obvious.
TASTE : Sweet-ish malts, smoke, a nice floral hop tinge, lots of fruit that are a bit of a surprise judging from the nose. White flowers and an almost peach side to the fruit profile. Very, very interesting. I'm especially digging the mix of the malt, smoke and peach aromas. Works amazingly well for me.
MOUTHFEEL : This is just what it needs to be, in my opinion. The round feel that the slightly sweet malts bring help support and complement the smoke. A "normal" lager would be much too thin and delicate for that smoke profile. Carbonation is spot on after a few swings around the glass for the sake of smelling the stuff right.
OVERALL : I've known people who felt the smoke in this brew was overwhelming, but to me it's nearly perfectly balanced. Everything works amazingly well. The smoke attack quickly calms down and the fruit profile slowly begins to dominate, although always leaving a healthy amount of room for the smoke. I haven't had many rauchbiers, but I keep coming back to this one. Great stuff.

Aecht Schlenkerla (although, I swear that k looks like an f!) Rauchbier. 5.1% ABV.
A: About a finger and a half of head. Deep red/dark plum in color. Some slight lacing; most slides off.
S: Oh, wow! I can smell the smokiness right away! It's akin to that of the smoked Gouda (Holland) I got from my work. Meaty/bacon. Black pepper.
T/MF: Fairly smooth on the palate. Has an off peppered bologna/sausage flavor, with a light rye taste on the back. Again, reminiscent of the skin on smoked Gouda.
This is quite weird, to me. The aroma is quite nice, but the taste is not something I would want in a beer. Very likely needs a food pairing. Maybe some heavy German breads...
Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.
