Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into a tulip.
Out of the bottle this has a dark raisin brown base color with a dark copper edge. A fluffy white head rises an inch or so up, leaving some lace down the sides of the glass as it fades.
The smokiness is very apparent in the nose. It is different than American beers that simply use smoked malts. This has a cured nature to it, almost like a spicy cured meat. At first it smells like there is something wrong with it, but the smell is beginning to grow on me. There are some light sweet malt notes underneath the smoke.
There is a moment where the flavor on the tongue is more malt than smoke, but that flavor does not last long. There is a soft bready sweetness with a gentle suggestion of dark fruits. Throughout the rest of the sip, however, the smoke really dominates, washing over the malt and controlling the flavor. It reminds me of a well-smoked meat.
The body of this beer is rather light, as it does only have a 5.4% ABV. The carbonation is appropriately smooth while still slightly crisp. There is not much in the way of residual stickiness or flavor.
This is one of my first forays into rauchbiers, and I have to say I enjoyed it. I would not drink this all of the time, but I appreciate just how different it is compared to some traditional styles.

Aecht Schlenkerla (although, I swear that k looks like an f!) Rauchbier. 5.1% ABV.
A: About a finger and a half of head. Deep red/dark plum in color. Some slight lacing; most slides off.
S: Oh, wow! I can smell the smokiness right away! It's akin to that of the smoked Gouda (Holland) I got from my work. Meaty/bacon. Black pepper.
T/MF: Fairly smooth on the palate. Has an off peppered bologna/sausage flavor, with a light rye taste on the back. Again, reminiscent of the skin on smoked Gouda.
This is quite weird, to me. The aroma is quite nice, but the taste is not something I would want in a beer. Very likely needs a food pairing. Maybe some heavy German breads...
