Around three years ago, I tried my first Rauchbier with a friend, at the time I only bought it because of the label, and no real appreciation for fine brew-- thought it was god-awful--it was a drain pour. The thought of Rauchbier has lingered all this time, and after subjecting myself to becoming a beer geek i.e, the hoppier, the darker, the thicker, the higher ABV, bring it, I'm open to all..so a traditional smoked German Ale isn't so scary....
A light hiss from the cap begins the experience, pours out a deep burnished brown color, held up to the light reveals beautiful ruby light tones around the edges, light bubbles rising in the glass. an absolute perfect head caps this brew. Light tan, fluffy, foamy and thick, a bit like a wispy cloud of smoke if you will. Spot-on appearance.
Chilled to around 40 degrees, on first smell yields smoky leather, smoked jerky meat, spices akin to pepper, carbon, reminiscent of walking in the cold and catching a wisp of a fireplace. Digging beyond the smoke, I find a bit of sweet malts, caramel, bitter mineral notes, finishes with another wisp of smoke and touch of sweet maltiness.
Flavor is amazingly delicious. All of the worry I had about hating this beer has quickly dissipated like a wisp of smoke( pun intended). First sip, drank a bit under-serving temp, I find lightly sweet malt, biting carbonation, caramel, oak, then ending with the light, lingering smoke flavor. As it warms, sip after sip yields a light, delicate German dunkel with accents of smoke. The malt, bitterness, and carbonation all work together, and the smoke seemingly accents, begins and finishes without dominating as I had expected.
Mouth feel is medium, bright, well carbonated and lively. A light sweetness is ended by the light smoky finish. I really cannot comment enough about the balance of this beer. I don't think I would want glass after glass of this brew, but in food pairings, or just the simple enjoyment of 1 bottle, it really is perfect.
If you are worried about drinking liquid BBQ sauce---fear not, this brew is an amazing balance of perfect execution. Malt, carbonation, yeast, and smoke all play a dominant role yet all work together. What an amazing and traditional brew. I now must find the Ur-bock!

Aecht Schlenkerla (although, I swear that k looks like an f!) Rauchbier. 5.1% ABV.
A: About a finger and a half of head. Deep red/dark plum in color. Some slight lacing; most slides off.
S: Oh, wow! I can smell the smokiness right away! It's akin to that of the smoked Gouda (Holland) I got from my work. Meaty/bacon. Black pepper.
T/MF: Fairly smooth on the palate. Has an off peppered bologna/sausage flavor, with a light rye taste on the back. Again, reminiscent of the skin on smoked Gouda.
This is quite weird, to me. The aroma is quite nice, but the taste is not something I would want in a beer. Very likely needs a food pairing. Maybe some heavy German breads...
Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.
