500mL bottle (no date) poured into a Tulip stout glass.
Appearance: Ruby red to dark orange-brown beer, clear, with a light tan head. 1/8" foam upon pouring slowly died down to a ring at the edge and thin skin across the top. Some tiny islands of lacing here and there.
Smell: Definitely smokey - some aspects of a BBQ smokehouse with I swear is a tiny bit of phenol as well. With a swirl, the smokiness subsides a bit and a tiny bit of the malt comes out. Quite an interesting smelling beer.
Taste: Smokey again, but not as powerful as I thought it would be. Smoke reminds me of something off a BBQ grill that sat too long, or like food cooked over a campfire. But the smoke up front moves into a nice malt flavor, and then a lingering earthy hop + smoke flavor again. Malt more pronounced as the beer warms up.
Mouthfeel: Good carbonation, slick, but chewy. I'm actually glad the beer has as much carbonation as it does, as it clears the palate for another smokey sip.
Overall / Drinkability: Quite drinkable. At first I was a little bit concerned due to the interesting smell (the phenol) but the more I drank, the more I liked it and the more drinkable it became. Went fantastic with pork chops and green beans, and I think would go really well with a variety of other meat dishes. I think that the smoke is just right. Too much and it could really overpower everything, but here - nicely balanced. Prominent, but not domineering. A very good beer overall and again, nicely drinkable.

Aecht Schlenkerla (although, I swear that k looks like an f!) Rauchbier. 5.1% ABV.
A: About a finger and a half of head. Deep red/dark plum in color. Some slight lacing; most slides off.
S: Oh, wow! I can smell the smokiness right away! It's akin to that of the smoked Gouda (Holland) I got from my work. Meaty/bacon. Black pepper.
T/MF: Fairly smooth on the palate. Has an off peppered bologna/sausage flavor, with a light rye taste on the back. Again, reminiscent of the skin on smoked Gouda.
This is quite weird, to me. The aroma is quite nice, but the taste is not something I would want in a beer. Very likely needs a food pairing. Maybe some heavy German breads...
Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.
