I don't know what to think of this beer. It is different than anything I have ever tried. I've had some smoked beers in the past, but these Rauchbiers are on another level. Personally, I can't handle this beer! Too strong of a smoked flavor for me. It is hard for me to rate this beer so low because it seems to be a high quality crafted beer. But this is my first Rauchbier so I can't compare it to others. Tastes like smoked salmon, esp. in the aftertaste. Malts are there at the beginning and middle but dissapear after that leaving only a strong smoked flavor. I might try this again later when my palate is more advanced, but for now the rating stays.
Ok, that first review was a few years ago and since then I have tried the Marzen numerous times and I really do love it. I have come to embrace the smokiness and almost crave it when smoking meats on the grill. I like the sweetness of the malts and how they balance the smoke flavors a bit. I would love to try this or the Urbock from the cask at the brewery.

Aecht Schlenkerla (although, I swear that k looks like an f!) Rauchbier. 5.1% ABV.
A: About a finger and a half of head. Deep red/dark plum in color. Some slight lacing; most slides off.
S: Oh, wow! I can smell the smokiness right away! It's akin to that of the smoked Gouda (Holland) I got from my work. Meaty/bacon. Black pepper.
T/MF: Fairly smooth on the palate. Has an off peppered bologna/sausage flavor, with a light rye taste on the back. Again, reminiscent of the skin on smoked Gouda.
This is quite weird, to me. The aroma is quite nice, but the taste is not something I would want in a beer. Very likely needs a food pairing. Maybe some heavy German breads...
Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.
