Nice smokiness in the aroma, as expected. I may be getting more used to rauchbier, but I think this is more muted than I remember the first time I was exposed to it. Also believe there's a light grassy scent from the hops.
Medium to higher levels of carbonation, not much presence on the palette with a slight watery feel.
Deep mahogany red in an imperial pint glass with a nice initial head with medium large carbonation bubbles which are hanging around and lacing the glass nicely.
Not sure if b/c of travel but getting some coppery hints in taste. Grassy bitterness in finish in the back of the mouth, smoky flavor lingers. I like this, not as good as Aecht's weizen though.
If used to smoky flavor seems as if 4-5 pints would be easy enough, I'm gradually liking rauchbier more and look forward to more.
Could be the difference in my preference b/w weizen and marzen (I like weizen beers better and liked it better overall). Good taste and aroma, I'm a bit bothered by the lingering hop grassy taste at the finish.

Aecht Schlenkerla (although, I swear that k looks like an f!) Rauchbier. 5.1% ABV.
A: About a finger and a half of head. Deep red/dark plum in color. Some slight lacing; most slides off.
S: Oh, wow! I can smell the smokiness right away! It's akin to that of the smoked Gouda (Holland) I got from my work. Meaty/bacon. Black pepper.
T/MF: Fairly smooth on the palate. Has an off peppered bologna/sausage flavor, with a light rye taste on the back. Again, reminiscent of the skin on smoked Gouda.
This is quite weird, to me. The aroma is quite nice, but the taste is not something I would want in a beer. Very likely needs a food pairing. Maybe some heavy German breads...
Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.
