A - Brown pour that is very clear. Hearty light creme foam rises high and retains pretty well. some patches of lacing is present, and no carbonation of note.
S - Smells like smoked pork, bacon grease, and a bit of tabacco. The smoky malta give this a refined and pleasant character. There is a slight amount of brown sugar as well if your nose can find it.
T - Smoky peat malts make this a liquid backyard pig roast. And that's a good thing! The flavors leave a roasty feel on the palate. Smoke is present throughout giving off embers of charred meats. Finish is rather dry.
M - Surprising to me this is a smooth beer. I felt it was on the thinner side, but that could be more to style. In the proper context this could be sessionable, but at the expense of tasting much else.
O - This is the iconic German example of a style that few make, and even fewer do well. When in the mood I would absolutely get another of this. And the price and availability make that very likely.

Aecht Schlenkerla (although, I swear that k looks like an f!) Rauchbier. 5.1% ABV.
A: About a finger and a half of head. Deep red/dark plum in color. Some slight lacing; most slides off.
S: Oh, wow! I can smell the smokiness right away! It's akin to that of the smoked Gouda (Holland) I got from my work. Meaty/bacon. Black pepper.
T/MF: Fairly smooth on the palate. Has an off peppered bologna/sausage flavor, with a light rye taste on the back. Again, reminiscent of the skin on smoked Gouda.
This is quite weird, to me. The aroma is quite nice, but the taste is not something I would want in a beer. Very likely needs a food pairing. Maybe some heavy German breads...
Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.
