Poured from a 32oz growler into a Surly Darkness glass. I didn't catch whose growler it was (Dan? Chris?), but thanks are definitely due for such a bizarre treat.
A: Hazy lemon-colored body with a 1/2" head of white froth. Mediocre retention, but nice delicate lace.
S: Whoa. Craziness. Powerfully fruity white wine, moderate smoke, and some herbal hops. The lager, smoke, and barrel all come through nicely, with the end result being somehow both mellow and intense, both integrated and complex. Awesome.
T: Slightly tart vinous fruitiness up front, with smoke and the faintest hint of noble hops filling in on the long, dry finish. Very tasty, but a little unbalanced in favor of the wine. I'd like a bit more malt and hops, but it's still quite tasty.
M: Soft, light body with very low carbonation. It feels rather like wine, which really helps accentuate the vinousness of the brew. Solid.
O: I'm pretty sure this is my first barrel-aged Helles, and possibly my first BA lager of any kind (unless you count sours that used a lager as the base, like Isabelle Proximus). The delicate base really led to an intense expression of the barrel, with the fresh, fruity wine dominating. The touch of Schlenkerla smoke really helped give it some depth and character, and with just a bit more beer-ness I think it would have been truly spectacular. I'm really not sure how to rate it, since it obviously tastes nothing like the style guidelines, but whatever you call it it's delicious.
