If you are going to Short's Brewery in the small town of Bellaire, this is a must stop. They do not have an overwhelming selection like liquor stores but they have great finds and only good stuff. The husband and wife who run the store started selling craft beer due to their passion for it. You can see this in what they carry and with talking to them. I have been able to find beers here that were no longer available in MI.

Here's the breakdown

Atmosphere: Nothing special, it is a small little meat market. To get to the store you have to walk behind their house. They have a counter full of great cuts of fish and meats, along with smoked fish and jerky. There are a couple fridges filled with beer. There are some cool beer signs along with a shelf with beer mugs and glasses.

Quality: All of his products are good quality, from the food to the beer selection. He keeps everything in a fridge, so you know the IPAs are not sitting at room temp in the sunlight.

Service: This is a definitely their strong point. Both the husband and wife are super friendly and enjoyable. They love talking beer and will help you out when trying to make a choice on food.

Selection: He has a lot of great MI beer, along with some other treats, including Stone and Southern Tier, and a selection of German imports.

Food: As I mentioned before, they have a wide selection of meats, both fresh and smoked. I have only gotten smoked fish and jerk. All of the different ones I have tried have been great.

Value: Everything from the food to the beer is priced very well. I was able to pick up KBS for $5 apiece when other places were charging around $7-8.

I grew up in this area, and whenever I am back to visit I always stop off at this place and pick up some fish and a couple beers. Also last time I was there I was able to share some beers with the owner and chat with him for a while. As I mentioned above, if you are going to Short's Brewery, you have no reason not to stop in this place.

Note: I think they close down during the winter (as does most of the area), though I am not sure on exact dates

If you are from out of town and you're making a trip to Short's, it is worth 15 to 30 minutes to drive a half mile north of Short's to visit Bellaire Smokehouse. Their shop is in a small unattached building behind the owner's home. The only beer they have is in two coolers toward one end of the shop. I found a Woot Stout today that I have had difficulty finding elsewhere recently. They also had about 10 different Short's sixers, and some Lagunitas, Founders and a few other notables that I can't recall right now. Chances are they will have something you find interesting.

There's not much room to walk around in the shop but you don't need to. I wish my hometown had a meat market like this. Lots of great smoked meats such as beef sticks, whitefish, salmon and jerky. All of it was reasonably priced.

The ladies behind the counter were very nice and helpful. One accidentally goofed my purchase but she corrected it before I even noticed. I will definitely come back here every time I make a visit to Short's.

I've had my eye on Bellaire Smokehouse for a while now after reading something about them back in the day. I had no idea they sold beer and after reading the review below mine I believe they must have cut back some of the sales over time.

The Smokehouse is located just over the bridge from Short's and behind the owner's house. A small sign and walkway lead the way to the little shack out back in front of the bank of smokers. There was a cooler door with craft beer as we entered. Devil Dancer, some Shorts seasonals, Bells, Right Brain, and a couple other Michigan offerings. The real draw of this place is the smoked fish. We showed up at the right time as they pulled some still warm trout off the smoker. The bacon looked great and the whitefish was also delicious, all smoked in-house. Jerkey, whitefish pate, maple syrup, jam, and various other meats are all for sale at the Smokehouse.

The service was very friendly and the woman behind the counter was talkative and quick to answer questions. I wouldn't recommend this place for a beer run but I'd recommend it for the delicious, oily, fresh smoked fish and the other local treats for sale. If you find yourself at Short's make a quick run down the street before you leave town, it'll give you a chance to sober up and grab awesome fish.
