I poured a 12oz bottle into a goblet rather aggressively. A beautiful dark amber color; fairly cloudy. About a 1 finger head which surprised me. Even for a 6.3% beer there wasn't a lot of carbonation. The nose was very pleasing and got the salivary glands going immediately. I didn't find the aroma as "malty" as others have characterized it. I thought the smell was a little subtle in comparison to how this beer poured and looked in the glass. It gave the initial appearance of "This is gonna be big", but the smell wasn't as big as I anticipated. Subtle malt. The taste was very complex. I took three big sips initially and got a different impression with each one. A good size sip and a quick swallow yielded a dry finish. A smaller sip and the middle palate was more predominate. Taking a sip and holding it in the mouth rendered yet more layers of taste and feel to this beer. My initial reaction to the mouth feel was surprisingly pleasant. Overall I was well pleased. I got stuck on the IPA bandwagon for the last year along with, (apparently), everyone else. I've made it a point NOT to drink any IPA the past few months, and to try and get back to the other aspects of good beer besides just the HOPS. This beer was very impressive. I'm glad I bought a 6 pack.

12 oz bottle, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a pretty, deep, dark, mahogany color, speckled with orange highlights and a quarter of a finger of white head that quickly dissolved away into a halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass.

Aroma: Nice aromas of toasted malt, Belgian yeast, dried stone fruit, candied-sugar, and a touch of leather.

Taste: Good flavors of toasted malt and dried stone fruit, such as raisins, apricots and prunes up front, followed by some candied-sugar-like sweetness, Belgian yeast and a touch of floral flavors of straw and clover.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, with some nice carbonation. With an ABV of 6.3%, there is no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: If you had told me that an Arizona brewery could produce a very drinkable bier de garde, I’d been very highly doubtful, but the proof is in the glass! This is very, very good! I’ll certainly drink this again!

Poured a deep brownish copper, with a half-finger off-white head that quickly receded to a ring of off-white lace leaving minimal lacing. Its not a bad appearance, certainly true to style guidelines. Scents of sweet caramel malt, fruity esters, yeasty aromas, toasty malt, faint grape and a bit of an off, cheesy aroma. Its a pretty good scent, but that cheesy off-note keeps it from being fantastic. Flavor is very malty. Sweet caramel malt begins the flavor, there is a modest level of flora hops, though not apparent at first, that becomes more prominent on the middle and finish of the sip. In the middle toasted malt also begins to appear, sustained through the finish. There is also a bit of a yeasty bread flavor in the middle and some earthy and musty notes throughout, that particularly come through on the finish and aftertaste. The aftertaste also includes a bit of a dank hop character. Alcohol flavor is quite apparent and present throughout the sip. A bit of an off cheesiness appears in the very back of the flavor as the beer warms, which brings it down a little bit. The flavor is far better than the aroma, malty, moderate earthy and floral hop bitterness and a good deal of alcohol, despite its ABV. Its pretty true to what the style should be and not at all unpleasant. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and a slightly chewy feel. Its pretty good, very easy to drink. Overall this is a pretty good beer. Its not the best out there, but its pleasant enough and pretty true to style. Its worth trying if you get the chance at the least, though there is that off cheesiness in the aroma and the flavor as it warms.
