22 oz bottle, poured into a goblet
Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, pitch-black color, with a quarter of a head of white-colored foam that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that partially covered the top of the beer.
Aroma: Very aromatic, with tons of bready, roasty, roasted malt aromas up front, imparting notes of freshly toasted dark bread, dark chocolate, dark molasses, licorice and a hint of smoke and charcoal. Very rich, earthy and inviting.
Taste: Rich, earthy, and delicious flavors to match the aroma. Lots of bready, roasted malt flavors up front, followed by lots of brown sugar and dark molasses-like sweetness. There are also notes of dark chocolate, licorice and a hint of smoke.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and very smooth, as there is no carbonation, what-so-ever. With an ABV of 7.0%, there is no alcohol on the palate.
Overall: This is a very delicious, earthy, rich, beer! Highly recommended!

Sampled on tap at 1702; February 2012
The beer arrives with a very creamy looking, lightly browned, dark tan colored head that leaves some nice lacing on the sides of my glass. The beer is a concentrated, brown-amber color that shows a brilliantly clear, brown-tinged, concentrated amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells predominantly of herbaceous hop notes up front, with specifics of pine, touches of menthol, and earthy, almost hemp like herbal character. A second go at the aroma reveals more of a citrust / fruit hop focus with notes of tangelo zest, burnt lychee, and bright ruby red grapefruit zest. There is a supporting malt character that provides a touch of roastiness to everything as well as an underlying toasted maltiness and browned caramelized character.
Bitter, with roast and hop influence, up front, as it rolls across the palate flavors of pine and earthy herbal notes play a prominent role and accentuate the bitter hop bite. The beer is fairly light bodied and there isn’t much hop sweetness here, this suppresses the fruity hop notes, but these are still quite noticeable with flavors tangelo, sweet grapefruit, kumquat and lychee; this notes are quite as bright and fruity as I would expect in a regular IPA, but are quite typical in dark IPAs (which is part of the reason why I don’t enjoy them as much as regular IPAs). The malt character plays a mostly supporting role, the dark / roasted malt clearly influences the hop character here, but the roast flavors are overly noticeable here; this isn’t nearly as roasted as a Porter usually is, and is about at the level that I would like in a Dark IPA; subtle roastiness, with some lingering burnt influenced bitterness as well as some lingering, roasted / deeply-toasted malt notes that intermingle with the lingering hop bitterness in the finish.
This is solid example of a Dark IPA, and clearly demarcates itself from being a hoppy Porter with its subtle used of roasted character, but having said that it also clearly demonstrates why I don’t prefer Dark IPAs to a regular version; the dark / roasted grain gets in the way of the hop character as it doesn’t allow the hop character to be nearly as expressive as it could otherwise be. Still, this is quite a nice beer that I am happy to be drinking right now.

Picked up a bomber at Total WIne in mid December for $4.99, "Still great until at least" 0
2-05-13.
Beer poured a deep brown with some hints of red. Not much head.
Nose has hints of cocoa and coffee.
Taste is cocoa and coffee but not sweet as there is a decent amount of hops to balance this out nicely. There is a bit of dark fruits lingering on the palate longer after a sip.
Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied but pretty smooth.
Overall this brew is a nice surprise a well balanced flavorful brew from a local brewer that i have not had much experience with. Recommended.

Served on tap at the Phoenix Brewery tasting room. Poured a jet black with a nice off white head of about an inch that settled into a thin head that stuck around. The scent was of roasted malt, black coffee and chocolate. This taste carried over into the flavor, which had a nice black coffee and chocolate character, with a bit of prune and raisin flavors on the finish. The taste reminded me of a Russian Imperial Stout, just toned down to a more approachable level. Mouthfeel was smooth, lacking in too much carbonation, a good level for a porter with the easy drinking I seek in the style. Overall an interesting beer, and quite good. An excellent introduction to the darker beers and with a character of it's own.

Pours dark black that lets a little light through with a white head that settles to a slight film and a ring. Nose is chocolate, coffee, some dark fruit, raisins and something I don't like. Its like a metallic scent, like the iron in blood. Its weird. The taste is similar. Light chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, metallic iron taste, some raisins and a bit of booze. Medium body, kind of watery mouthfeel. I'm not really impressed. Its not a drainpour but its not really good. I wish breweries like this wouldn't put out subpar beers with Arizona stamped right on them. Sonoran disappointed me just as much with their AZ Centennial brews. Oh well, we'll get it together one day (Santan, Dragoon and some others are pointing us the right way).
